🇿🇦 How did 78 miners, and perhaps many more, die in an abandoned mine in South Africa?

Amid a crisis of unemployment and rising prices in South Africa, People have taken to enter abandoned mines to try and find gold and minerals to sell and survive. South African authorities have launched a crackdown on these illegal mines, putting the lives of hundreds of miners at risk.

This is the context in which the bodies of 78 dead miners were retrieved from Buffelsfontein mine’s Shaft 11 after being trapped underground since last August by the South African police who cut-off food and water supply in its crackdown.

Mametlwe Sebei, president of the General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA), spoke to Pavan Kulkarni about this humanitarian catastrophe and the responsibility of authorities.

Here is what you need to know about the case. Visit our website to read the full article of Pavan Kulkarni.

Hospitals in Gaza are still to begin recuperating from 15 months of relentless attacks when Israeli forces, with support from the Palestinian Authority, launched assaults on healthcare institutions in Jenin.

The absence of hundreds of health workers—imprisoned, tortured or killed by Israel—is deeply felt in Gaza.According to the Ministry of Health, there are no fully functional hospitals in the region, and UNICEF estimates that less than half of the 36 hospitals are partially operational.

It was not enough for him to make threats on social media and write “tremble, you left-wing bastards.”

At the Davos forum, he defended Elon Musk again, after he had made a Nazi salute, and he lashed out violently against what he calls the “woke ideology.”

🇨🇴 What is happening in Catatumbo?

Fighting in the region has provoked a humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands displaced and dozens killed. The roots of this current crisis are deep and the implications are serious, with Petro announcing last week that he was suspending the peace process with the ELN.

The sensitive situation in Colombia represents a threat to the wellbeing and safety of the communities of Catatumbo, which for decades have suffered the impacts of the internal armed conflict, and threatens to completely upend a peace process that is decades in the making.

Given that the situation is actively unfolding and the guns are still hot, there are many elements that are difficult to verify or know with certainty. This is some of what we know so far.

Kenya has deployed another batch of 217 police officers to Haiti, adding to the 400 sent last year as part of a “multinational mission” aimed at addressing the country’s deepening crisis of gang violence.

The intervention aims to protect critical infrastructure and conduct “targeted operations” alongside the Haitian National Police, however, there are significant doubts about its effectiveness in resolving the systemic challenges plaguing Haiti.

🇵🇸 We express our total solidarity to Ali Abunimah, the executive director of the indispensable outlet Electronic Intifada who was just arrested in Zurich, Switzerland ahead of a speaking event.

Since it was founded over 20 years ago, EI has provided consistent and rigorous coverage of the Palestinian struggle for liberation and against the Israeli occupation.

Abunimah’s arrest takes place in the context of increased repression of activists and journalists in the Palestine solidarity movement across Europe. Just a few months ago, the home of EI’s associate editor, Asa Winstanley, was raided by British counterterrorism police.

As a media outlet committed to justice and true press freedom, we express our unwavering solidarity with Ali and Electronic Intifada.

🇵🇸 Palestinians are returning to northern Gaza following an agreement in the ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians are making the journey by foot back to the north. The area was one of the hardest hit during the 15 months of Israel's genocide and during the last months before the ceasefire, the north was under a near total siege and cut off from aid and essential supplies.

Though they return to leveled buildings and destruction, the return of Palestinians to their land is hailed as a victory against attempts by the Israeli occupation to ethnically cleanse Gaza.
