🇨🇴 What is happening in Catatumbo?

Fighting in the region has provoked a humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands displaced and dozens killed. The roots of this current crisis are deep and the implications are serious, with Petro announcing last week that he was suspending the peace process with the ELN.

The sensitive situation in Colombia represents a threat to the wellbeing and safety of the communities of Catatumbo, which for decades have suffered the impacts of the internal armed conflict, and threatens to completely upend a peace process that is decades in the making.

Given that the situation is actively unfolding and the guns are still hot, there are many elements that are difficult to verify or know with certainty. This is some of what we know so far.

Kenya has deployed another batch of 217 police officers to Haiti, adding to the 400 sent last year as part of a “multinational mission” aimed at addressing the country’s deepening crisis of gang violence.

The intervention aims to protect critical infrastructure and conduct “targeted operations” alongside the Haitian National Police, however, there are significant doubts about its effectiveness in resolving the systemic challenges plaguing Haiti.

🇵🇸 We express our total solidarity to Ali Abunimah, the executive director of the indispensable outlet Electronic Intifada who was just arrested in Zurich, Switzerland ahead of a speaking event.

Since it was founded over 20 years ago, EI has provided consistent and rigorous coverage of the Palestinian struggle for liberation and against the Israeli occupation.

Abunimah’s arrest takes place in the context of increased repression of activists and journalists in the Palestine solidarity movement across Europe. Just a few months ago, the home of EI’s associate editor, Asa Winstanley, was raided by British counterterrorism police.

As a media outlet committed to justice and true press freedom, we express our unwavering solidarity with Ali and Electronic Intifada.

🇵🇸 Palestinians are returning to northern Gaza following an agreement in the ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians are making the journey by foot back to the north. The area was one of the hardest hit during the 15 months of Israel's genocide and during the last months before the ceasefire, the north was under a near total siege and cut off from aid and essential supplies.

Though they return to leveled buildings and destruction, the return of Palestinians to their land is hailed as a victory against attempts by the Israeli occupation to ethnically cleanse Gaza.

🇨🇴Colombian nationals arrived this morning to Colombia without handcuffs and on a Colombian Air Force plane.

The deportation flight back to Colombia proceeded after President Gustavo Petro had on Sunday refused to receive a flight full of deportees in protest of the inhumane conditions they were subjected to on the US military aircraft. Following this move, US President Donald Trump had threatened to impose high tariffs on Colombia and sanctions on Colombian officials, to which Petro responded that he would do the same. Late on Sunday, the Colombian and US governments announced that they had resolved the diplomatic impasse and the deportation flights would resume, but with better conditions for migrants.

Martí was Cuban poet, thinker and an important figure in the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain. Through his writings, he became a symbol of liberation and independence for all Latin Americans, reaching the heights of Simón Bolivar and Augusto Sandino. Martí coined the concept of "Our America", a political, social, cultural, and economic alternative to the America subjugated by US imperialism.
