“The attack on Niamey Airport amounts to an act of sabotage against Niger, given the airport’s strategic importance and its proximity, second only in security significance to the presidential residence.” Aboubakar Alassane, a Nigerien leader of the anti-imperialist West Africa People’s Organization (WAPO), told People Dispatch.

Nigerien defense and security forces said they thwarted a coordinated militant attack on Diori Hamani International Airport in the capital, Niamey, late last week. Nigerien forces killed 20 assailants, and four soldiers were wounded.

The Islamic State (IS) group claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming that it had inflicted significant damage on the site. Nigerien authorities said the attackers attempted to infiltrate the airport and airbase, facilities that host key military installations and the headquarters of the Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali Joint Force, a regional mechanism established to combat armed groups operating across the Sahel.

Belgian political leader Peter Mertens writes on how in the US, security forces move into working-class neighborhoods – not into the villas and golf clubs of Epstein or Trump. Words like “monsters” and “death penalty” are reserved for people at the bottom, but as soon as the spotlight is turned upward, the hysteria dissipates.

🇨🇺Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel held a press conference to detail the urgent measures being implemented by the Cuban government as the island faces one of its most challenging periods yet.

The US government has openly threatened Cuba and tightened the stranglehold on the Cuban economy with the naval blockade of Venezuela and an executive order calling Cuba a threat to US national security. Key to Cuba's resilience in this moment, detailed the president, is international cooperation, especially in the efforts to make the island energy independent.

In a major victory for the Palestine solidarity movement, six Palestine Action activists who faced charges over a break-in at an Elbit Systems plant in Filton, near Bristol, were either acquitted or not convicted of all offenses.

“Despite government efforts to prejudice this trial, citing allegations of violence to justify treating Palestine Action as ‘terrorists,’ as if they were already proved, the jury which heard the evidence has refused to find the defendants guilty of anything, not even criminal damage,” a spokesperson for Defend Our Juries said following the verdict. “It shows how out of step this government is with public opinion, which is revulsed by the Government’s and Elbit’s complicity in genocide.”

Unlike social democratic projects in the West, Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution has set out to fundamentally transform society and build a socialist project rooted in class struggle and run by its people.

That means that the social advances are also tied to a process of raising consciousness among the population, whereby people become the protagonists of their own struggle in a process that ultimately seeks to give them the power and tools to run the country, replacing the bourgeois state with a communal one.
