Louis Berkhof recognized the feminization of American Christianity in 1932: "Many regard religion purely as a matter of emotional enjoyment, good enough for women, but hardly fit for men. According to them it is something apart from the life of man in general. It really means little or nothing for the serious business of life. It has no controlling influence on the thoughts of man, neither does it determine his action in any way. One can be a Christian with his heart (feeling), and a heathen with his head. He can say, "Lord, Lord" in private or public worship, and at the same time refuse to do the Lord's bidding in daily life. This is not only an unnoscriptural, but also an unpsychological view of religion, and one that has done a great deal of harm to the cause of God in the past."

The doctrinal heart (what theologians call "the material cause") of the Catholic/Protestant divide is over justification. However, many people on both sides don't fully understand the opposite side. This marks a turning point in American history. Despite how politicized the Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown cases were, the jury made the right decision. Now, if you're white in America, you can bank on a court finding against you, no matter the evidence.
