Leaving Linux after 3 years of usage.

Hello.
This is not a post about how converted my grampa to Linux, so I'm prepared for the inevitable downvotes. I just want to leave you with some constructive criticism, in hopes that you realize what's wrong, and maybe become conscious of it in the future.

MY REASONS:
- FRUSTRATION - everything I have ever done in Linux has been harder, more obscure, and more tedious. Only easy thing is using the package manager. Uninstalling packages not so much though. What is one button in Windows, in Linux is tens of minutes of googling code solutions on how to do a thing or how to unbug something.
- COMMUNITY - saying anything about ease-of-use and lack of GUI will get you called a "spoon-fed baby". I guess having the computer do the work for you and going on your merry way is a crime, instead of wasting time battling the system and the program.
- GAMING - there is nothing to discuss here. The "50%" gold rate on Proton is just plain wrong. The AAA games that actually matter don't play nice with Linux. Not Linuxes fault, but if I wanna use it, then it has to have at least one positive side. Maybe we can find one by the end of this post.
- PERIPHERALS - tedious to set up. If they even work, they require several programs. Logitech wheels don't work at all, for instance. Again, not Linuxes fault.
- PROGRAMS - for every good program on Windows, Linux has a vastly inferior and abandoned version which doesn't even work. Only good program is Bender. GIMP is atrocious and useless compared to Photoshop. CAD software is laughable.

REASONS TO USE LINUX:
- PRIVACY - that's why I started using it. Everything to battle the evil Windows 10. But I dunno. If one is like the newest smartphone and you can do everything with it, and the other is like one of those Texas calculators where you can code on them, then obviously the first option would be best for the majority of people. Simply because of a high entry wall, which every Linux fan will find a reason to justify.
- SERVERS - literally no one cares about that. Yea, they make the world go round, but I promise you that 99% of people couldn0t give a hoot about this.
- CONKY, EMACS

So yea. I will put a Win 10 LTSC on my main rig and come back to the future after years of stabbing myself in the leg for some reason. I will finally be able to enjoy good programs, good games, gaming wheels, everything. There is nothing you can do with Linux that you can't with Windows. And the things you can't definitely don't matter or make up of a very small fraction of usercases. I do not enjoy being spied on, and I will do my best to kill the telemetry and stuff, and maybe get a peehole. But the benefits will be just enormous. It would be like upgrading from PS1 to Xbox 360. 5 generations of improvement at once.

I will still have Linux on my Laptop because I can automate backing up my text files on my USB. Yea. Saved myself a second. Totally worth the massive frustration at everything else. NOT.

Cya around,

Your spoon-fed baby

Favourite linux distribution and why

Personally I’ve been getting into parrotOS. I know you shouldn’t really use it as your main operating system but its beautiful and runs so smoothly!

im just so confused by the different distros

ive tried googling what the actual differences are. some are obvious as security oriented or bleeding edge or userfriendly but then there are 40 other that just have no logical explanation to it.

there are just way too many distros that have no real difference from another. there need to be a community management to try and group all the different distros and devs to about 5 distros right now its just insanity

Book Recommendations

I'm interested in learning Linux and potentially getting my Linux+ in the future. What's a good book that you would recommend?

I've started with [LinuxJourney.com](https://LinuxJourney.com) but I prefer books usually.

Why Laptops?

Hi all,

I generally do most of my work on a desktop, either at work or at home, while a laptop just fills in very occasionally.

From what I’ve seen and heard though, a lot of Linux users seem to use laptops and not have a desktop. This has me intrigued so I’m wondering:

Is it because it’s portable?
That’s what work gave you?
Saves space/power?
Heavy lifting is done on a server?
Another reason?

Just trying to get a different perspective!

Linux Experiences/Rants or Education/Certifications thread - July 29, 2019

Welcome to r/linux rants and experiences! This megathread is also to hear opinions from anyone just starting out with Linux or those that have used Linux (GNU or otherwise) for a long time.

Let us know what's annoying you, whats making you happy, or something that you want to get out to r/linux but didn't make the cut into a full post of it's own.

For those looking for certifications please use this megathread to ask about how to get certified whether it's for the business world or for your own satisfaction. Be sure to check out r/linuxadmin for more discussion in the SysAdmin world!

_Please keep questions in r/linuxquestions, r/linux4noobs, or the Wednesday automod thread._

OEM Windows 10 Pro conversion to Linux. Easy?

I have a quick question about whether this solution is possible.

Situation:

Say someone gets Windows installation activated by OEM key. A few days later, it’s asking him to activate Windows 10.

Solution:

I am thinking it is possible for someone stuck with a faulty Windows (with no support) that he could boot up with a linux disk.

Or is there a better solution for failures of dodgy Windows OEM keys?

LXQT vs. KDE

Just curious if anyone has used both and preferred LXQT for reasons other than using slow hardware. I haven't used LXQT yet, but I've been tempted to try it just for the hell of it. IMO half the magic that makes KDE great is QT (the other half being that the KDE team doesn't remove features like the GNOME team tends to do. Sorry, that's not a jab at GNOME per say, I just dislike the current UI/workflow of GNOME and the constant push towards that workflow and away from a proven desktop experience that's existed since at least the 90s.)

The opensnitch's main dev: yes, i'm not working on it anymore and i'm not responding to issues, because i lost interest and nobody pays me for this ... if this project is so essential (?), the "Linux community" can fork it and send a PR.
