e contains the package version. If it is not defined in the recipe, it defaults to 1.0.
* Yocto requires that the ELF tag SONAME must be included in the library when it is built, thus, the flag “-Wl,-soname,libhelloworld.so.${PV}” has been added to the do\_compile step.

`DESCRIPTION = “Example Hello, World application for Yocto build.”`
`SECTION = “examples”`
`DEPENDS = “”`
`LICENSE = “CLOSED”`

`FILESEXTRAPATHS_prepend := “${THISDIR}/src:”`

`SRC_URI = “file://helloworld.c”`

`S = “${WORKDIR}”`

`do_compile() {`
`${CC} ${CFLAGS} ${LDFLAGS} -shared -fPIC -Wl,-soname,libhelloworld.so.${PV} \`
`${WORKDIR}/helloworld.c -o libhelloworld.so.${PV}`
`}`

`do_install() {`

`# add the /usr/lib folder to the sysroot for this recipe, to be`
`# added to the final rootfs`
`install -d ${D}${libdir}`

`# install the prebuilt library in /usr/lib with default permissions`
`oe_soinstall ${S}/libhelloworld.so.${PV} ${D}${libdir}`
`}`

2. Bitbake the recipe. Shared libraries are also considered development packages,so ensure that “helloworld-dev” remains in the IMAGE\_INSTALL variable in your bbappend.

`$ bitbake core-image-minimal`

### Conclusion

The recipe examples here should allow [any user to include custom applications in multiple ways](https://dornerworks.com/blog/including-custom-executables-and-libraries-in-your-linux-image-with-yocto). These instructions will allow you to improve your Yocto recipes by giving you the tools to include custom applications and libraries easily.

Does anyone know anywhere who'd buy such a thing? Like $100 is what I was thinking. It runs smooth and us quite unie running Linux on a Macbook with an SSD....haha

Novelty thing to have in my mind... But if you're interested in giving me info on how to sell it or being honest and telling me the real price this buying it yourself please PM. I start college in less than a month and I need every nickle and dime I can come up with.

Pango 1.44 drops support for bitmap fonts

From [https://github.com/GNOME/pango/blob/master/NEWS](https://github.com/GNOME/pango/blob/master/NEWS):

>Overview of changes in 1.44.0
=============================
- Use harfbuzz for shaping on all platforms
- Stop using freetype for font loading; this
**drops support for type1 and bitmap fonts**

This unfortunately seems to break bitmap font support across the desktop.

More info [in this blog post](https://blogs.gnome.org/mclasen/2019/05/25/pango-future-directions/):

>Freetypes FT_Face object has locking semantics that are broken and hard to work with; they are constantly getting in the way as we are juggling hb_fonts, FT_Face and cairo scaled font objects.
We’ve concluded that the best way forward is to stop using freetype for font loading or accessing font and glyph metrics. We can use Harfbuzz for all of these (a small gap will be closed soon).
Using Harfbuzz for font loading means that we will lose support for bitmap and type1 fonts. We think this is an acceptable trade-off, but others might disagree. Note that Harfbuzz does support loading bitmap-only OpenType fonts.

The Linux path

Hey there,
This is not a tech request, a spam or other and hope that admin does not burn my post.

I would know what think other users.

Today, without considering derivates like ubuntu and other similar based distro there are few main distros to trust. Today I see Debian, Slackware, gentoo, arch, opensuse(Suse), centos (RH), fedora. Now considering (from a simple user view) only user friendly distro like debian, opensuse and fedora remain.

Debian is the most used distro where derivates place their feet for a solid base.

What happen if a distro like debian, considering that opensuse and fedora are backed by corporation, will be abandoned? How many of the linux ecosystem will be destroyed?

I think that debian will never die but how would be the future linux path if this will happen?

I think that debian has saved linux from aggressive business and if It will be abandoned, probably something will be released but before this, a great hole will remain and user probably will adopt corporation distro. Minor distro probably will die, and for giant distro like ubuntu what would be the future?

How did you (intermediate - expert level users) "learn" linux?

Hey r./linux!

I've been using linux from time to time for alot of years, I love it because of the freedom it provides in terms of customization etc, however I do have to google quite alot when i run into problems, even the simpler ones.

Most of the time my googling takes me to a forum where the first post explains everything as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. I wish I had the knowledge to produce such a post, but the way the operating system works is so comprehensive and different from it's non UNIX competitor. And I can never settle with just understanding the shallow "high level" stuff. I want to truly understand how my computer works and how to operate it. Everything from commands and noscripts to how the bios works.

So reddit, I'd love to hear from you guys how you educated yourself to your level of expertise in this.

Edit: This post was originally removed by a bot, so I copied the question to r/linuxquestions. I really appreciate your replies, and please keep them coming! But if you find this posted in r/linuxquestions, this is why. :)

Alternative to iTunes.

I’m not using Linux right now. I have little experience and I’m going to switch to Linux soon.

I’m just curious that how do you manage songs, videos and ringtones on your iPhone? And getting backups. Is there any alternate software or do you just use “wine”?
