Offline USB Pendrive for Writing a Book Distribution Recommendations

All I need is the ability to run Libre offline so that I can write without worry. I plan on using a 32 Gig 3.0 USB drive.

I was thinking about using Tiny Core, getting Libre set up, and then making sure it can't log back online. Are there any other distros that might be better recommended?

Grease Monkey uses Linux

Just visited my local Grease Monkey autoshop to get my oil changed. Noticed their whole POS and database system was Linux running LXDE. Looked to maybe be Lubuntu.

Linux is spreading

My dad wanted to reset his windows 7 machine, so we grapped the install disc.

Everything went smoothly until drivers were to be installed, we tinkered for maybe 2 hours until we just gave up.

He asked if I had one of those like windows but not he could try.

We started with ubuntu, no dice, to foreign.

We tried lubuntu, he liked the likeness to windows, but to old school.

We went with kubuntu, the immortal words.

'This is it'

I'm building a custom Kubuntu ISO with Cubic and would like suggestions for software/packages to include.

I'm looking for suggestions about packages I can add to it that would improve overall functionality of the system and/or useful software.

Some of my own examples about what to include are fish, exFAT support, gparted, and git. If there is anything you immediately install frequently on a fresh copy of ubuntu/kubuntu, please post.

Is Fluxbox dead?

Anyone know if fluxbox is still alive? Their website is barely working.

List of problems with desktop Linux

I wanted to make a long post about how soon desktop Linux will get a good oppurtunity to get new users and how it still has many issues. I wanted to ask "what can be done to solve this", but then I realised that "this" was not well defined. And I do believe that in order to start looking for the solution to the problem, we firstly need to know what the problem is specifically.

So I looked around the internet to see if there are already any existing projects that aim to provide an overview of the issues that people see with desktop Linux. I found badly written [Wikipedia article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_desktop_Linux), a top 5 list, a [list](https://gitlab.com/probono/platformissues) that consists mostly of architecture issues and a [very detailed list](https://itvision.altervista.org/why.linux.is.not.ready.for.the.desktop.current.html) of issues, few of which look to me like cherry-picking.
Is that enough? Does that provide a good overview of everything wrong with desktop Linux or should we give XKCD927 a try and make a project that aggregates all the known issues into one place and allows community to rank, update and discuss listed issues?

Then broader question is if such thing would even be useful. Do we even have power to affect bigger Linux distros?

And do we even want to see problems with desktop Linux resolved? We can still keep using distros and not care about wider issues and about newcomers.

How does downloading applications work on linux?

I’m thinking of maybe getting Linux, but I’ve heard wierd things about downloading apps. Apparently most distros come with an app downloader, a bit like the AppStore for Mac. But I’ve also heard that you can get a larger selection by downloading something that increases the amount of apps you are able to download from a GUI.
Other than that, I heard you can download apps directly from the Linux terminal, by saying apt get or something like that. How does it know where to get an app? Do you need to know how to use terminal commands well to use Linux and download apps that don’t come on your app downloader?
