List of problems with desktop Linux
I wanted to make a long post about how soon desktop Linux will get a good oppurtunity to get new users and how it still has many issues. I wanted to ask "what can be done to solve this", but then I realised that "this" was not well defined. And I do believe that in order to start looking for the solution to the problem, we firstly need to know what the problem is specifically.
So I looked around the internet to see if there are already any existing projects that aim to provide an overview of the issues that people see with desktop Linux. I found badly written [Wikipedia article](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_desktop_Linux), a top 5 list, a [list](https://gitlab.com/probono/platformissues) that consists mostly of architecture issues and a [very detailed list](https://itvision.altervista.org/why.linux.is.not.ready.for.the.desktop.current.html) of issues, few of which look to me like cherry-picking.
Is that enough? Does that provide a good overview of everything wrong with desktop Linux or should we give XKCD927 a try and make a project that aggregates all the known issues into one place and allows community to rank, update and discuss listed issues?
Then broader question is if such thing would even be useful. Do we even have power to affect bigger Linux distros?
And do we even want to see problems with desktop Linux resolved? We can still keep using distros and not care about wider issues and about newcomers.

How does downloading applications work on linux?
I’m thinking of maybe getting Linux, but I’ve heard wierd things about downloading apps. Apparently most distros come with an app downloader, a bit like the AppStore for Mac. But I’ve also heard that you can get a larger selection by downloading something that increases the amount of apps you are able to download from a GUI.
Other than that, I heard you can download apps directly from the Linux terminal, by saying apt get or something like that. How does it know where to get an app? Do you need to know how to use terminal commands well to use Linux and download apps that don’t come on your app downloader?

Im looking into a DM to install on my Arch setup.
Some things I'm looking for:
Easily configurable (important)
Lightweight (important)
Looks "modern" (preferred feature easily subjective)
Secure (extremely important)
Good documentation
I had my eye on lightdm but wanted to see what others have to say about what they've used.
I also understand that a DM won't have everything I want but still appreciate your opinions and input

Just realized that different keyboard shortcuts in the terminal behave inconsistently
While going through the keyboard shortcuts for editing text, I've realized there are some inconsistencies as to what justifies a word. For instance we can look at the keyboard shortcut for cutting the word just before the cursor (CTRL-W) and the shortcut from transposing the current word with the last word (ALT-T).
If we have some text, let's say, `/usr/bin`, and the cursor sits just past the last character, transposing the last two words results in `/bin/usr.` So this implies that /usr and /bin are treated as two separate words. But if our cursor is in the same position and we delete the last word (or cut it), it removes the entire path /usr/bin. I.e. it just cuts until the preceding white space.
I am wondering why it would behave like that naturally. What defines a word should be consistent throughout all operations with the keyboard. I personally don't think it should depend on what type of editing I am doing. I would prefer it if the '/' was *always* treated as a word separator rather than have it depend on what I was doing. Inconsistency leads to confusion. Maybe I can fix this editing the bash config, but I don't think that should be necessary to begin with.
I am curious as to what others think about this.
Edit: I found something even more bizarre and irritating. As previously mentioned, if I use CTRL-W to delete the previous word when the cursor is just past the string `/usr/bin` it removes the entire string. **But** if I use the shortcut that does exactly the opposite (ALT-D) to remove the next word and the cursor is just before the string, I am left with `/bin`. So cutting forward recognized the slash character as a word separator, but cutting backwards does not. That's really stupid.

Linux-based DAS (direct-attached storage) ideas?
I see lots of great guides online for turning Linux machines (and Raspberry Pis) into NAS devices, but what about DAS devices like those USB enclosures one finds on Amazon. If I have a linux machine with a USB 3 port, how can I expose that port so another machine can access its disks directly? Is there some distro, package, or method for doing this? In my use case, using ethernet just wouldn't work.
Thanks anybody for their ideas and advice :D.

Looking to install my first distro
Hello linux community, I'm looking forward to try a dual boot and I have a few questions.
I've only been using windows, but I want to try linux and I don't want to jump with my head first so I know that I can make a dual boot with windows.
My first question is, can I have a dual boot by installing linux on another partition and is a hard process or is it straightforward within the linux install?
My 2nd question is with the distro itself, I want to install pop\_os but Idk if I should get the LTS release or the latest one. My use case is purely gaming and browsing, that's it.

Linux laptops simillar to Pinebook Pro?
Hello,
I'm in the market for a cheaper laptop, so I've been poking around online and found Pinebook Pro for pre-orders. Wish I was a forum member back then as they're getting theirs first, but it's only going to be available around september.
I was wondering what other options are out there for something similar. Cheap and efficient. Something as a daily driver for basic tasks as web browsing, youtube, office, etc. With hardware focused towards Linux. If anyone knows of something like that or has any ideas, please share.
Cheers.

How to remove Darling
Hello,
I tried to install Darling on my Ubuntu 19.04 by following these steps here: [https://wiki.darlinghq.org/build\_instructions](https://wiki.darlinghq.org/build_instructions)
at following step i have recieved a lot of warning generated:
>\# Build and install Darling
>
>make
and in the end it stucked at 94%
so i killed the process.
What i want to know is if it is okay to leave it like that or i better remove all the files copied from my laptop.
Maybe there is nothing to remove since it is just a layer but i do not know anything since im a very casual linux user.

thanks for the help, cheers

Laptop advise - Thinkpad vs KDE Slimbook vs System76
TLDR: Looking for suggestions for a new linux laptop under 2k CAD. Confused b/w Thinkpad/KDE Slimbook/System76.
So after months of saving, i think i'm ready for my next laptop after a long time \[i have been using my current laptop for around 8yrs now, and geez most of the things i knew about hardware has changed\]. I'm waiting for black friday to make the purchase.
My usecases:
1. I will use my laptop for tinkering around things like VMs, Dockers etc, trying out new programming languages etc.
2. I want to install and use Arch Linux - i might choose to move away to a different distro later. However i don't see myself going back to Windows, so linux support is of atmost importance.
3. My linux literacy is somewhere b/w beginner and intermediate - so i think i can google around stuff and apply fixes and solutions for "not-very-complicated" problems. I have been using Kubuntu for around a year now in my personal laptop.
4. Laptop will mostly be used along with a dock with 2-3 displays \[like a workstation\] , but i also want to carry the laptop for meetups and stuff. So i prefer laptop being an ultrabook - but anything not too heavy can be managed.

Specs i'm looking for:
1. Budget: Max 2k CAD \[1.5k USD/1.36K EUR\]. To be bought and used in Canada.
2. CPU: i5/i7 \[i7 preferred\]. I have read about Ryzen - but not sure how well they are linux supported, and none of the laptops i was looking for had this CPU.
3. RAM: 16GB or more. How is your experience with soldered RAM? Do they get damaged easily? I can start with 8GB and maybe later add 8GB.
4. Display: I don't game, also don't care much about the 4k display. So anything with HD and about will suffice. Definitely won't use the touchscreen feature or tablet mode.
5. Battery - Anything above 4-5hrs is fine as i will be mostly using this as a desktop with dock.
6. Storage: 250GB NVMe SSD
7. Repairabe: I plan to use this laptop atleast for next 5yrs. So something easily repairable will be preferred.

In your experience, how good are exlusive linux laptops like KDE Slimbook or/ System76? Are they better thank thinkpads ? I personally have shortlisted Thinkpad X1 Carbon \[but integrated memory is a disadvantage\] and few T series.
I would love to hear your opinions.
