How do I get my hands on a pinebook laptop?

What the noscript says. I'd really like one for school, but the ordering process in their page seems complicated. Is it an invite-only thing?

Best Cheap Linux machine

I am a beginning student in cybersecurity and I will soon start my second semester.

I am learning some from videos online about different versions of linux Kali linux, fedora, centOS etc.

starting my degree I thought a mac would be perfect and I personally really like it (it's my first apple product)

I run different versions on my mac using parallels vmware or virtualbox, and even created a live bootable usb.

problem is my mac is my main device so watching videos and running a virtual machine on one machine is kind of a hassle...

So I was thinking about buying some sort of cheap laptop like a chromebook, you can find these for around 100/200 dollars. I was wondering if this is worth it or if anyone has any recommendations for a cheap machine to run different versions of linux on?

Running Linux 16.04 on Chromebook

I have both ChromeOS and Linux installed. I’m trying to install/run gnome shell on my Chromebook laptop. My gnome shell version is 3.18.5. Whenever I try to install some extensions I get the “Unable to locate GNOME Shell settings or version. Make sure it is installed and running.” I don’t have a login screen when I boot into Linux, so I’m at a complete lost. Please help.

With more AMD CPU desktop sales, can we expect more AMD laptops?

There have been [lots of stories](https://www.forbes.com/sites/antonyleather/2019/04/09/amds-ryzen-5-2600-outsells-every-other-desktop-cpu-as-intel-loses-market-share/#1b29da63356b) in the news about AMD dramatically outselling Intel CPUs on the desktop. I'm jonesing for an AMD laptop, and while I'd be happy with a 17 " [Dell Inspiron 3000](https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/new-inspiron-17-3000-laptop/spd/inspiron-17-3785-laptop/NNlok7am204s), I wonder if I were to hold out until Christmas if there would be more options available.

The Dell is nice, but a little more power like a Ryzen 7 would be great, but those seem to be limited to gaming laptops that are a little too over powered (and expensive) for me.

So do you think we will see more Ryzen laptops in the near future?

The state of OLED brightness on Linux

I bought myself a laptop with an OLED-panel (XPS 7590), unbeknownst that brightness adjustment actually isn't supported in Linux.

This is something that I can live with, the xrandr hack is working fine, although with a caveat, which is reduced color depth at low brightness.

But I'm very curious to why this has been the case for so long, and why I can't seem to find any mailing lists or ongoing discussions around this fundamental flaw. OLED has been out for a while now, and laptops with OLED is starting to become commonplace, at least in the high-end market. It would be terribly disappointing for many Linux users to find out that their fancy new laptop is lacking something as basic and essential as screen brightness control.

I want to untar themes and icon packs but apparently I don't have the right permissions. I've tried the terminal method as shown below. I've also tried the GUI method of right click, extract to, other location usr/share/icons with zero luck. How do I get the tar.gz to unpack where I want them to?

So I tend to lurk and are on the cusp of building my pc

I plan to dual-boot using Majaro and Windows 10. My question is which should I do first so I can access all my files on either OS? I want to use Linux for programming and system maintenance and such. But all the games I want to play work best on Windows plus all the browsers are made for Windows. I just want full control ALL the time
