r/linux - Get the world's smallest Linux computer for under $50

Installed Solus on Lenovo Ideapad 110s yesterday with no prior exposure to linux at all
My dad had a Lenovo Ideapad 110s with Windows 10 that was just getting so bad it was making the laptop useless. Windows updates failing due to space. Chrome needing re-installed every now and again. Stuck on Windows Updates screen on shutdown every time.
Tried refreshing Windows 10, but could not get enough HD space at all even though I delete near every program and even some files that probably should not have been deleted.

Then I read online about Linux and decided I would give it a go. I have installed Windows and OSx via USB's in the past. How hard can it be right?

Some light Reddit and random sites reading and I decided on Solus.
Used Rufus to write the .iso to a new USB.
Ran Solus from the USB and thought that was it, until I realized that it was obviously just running from the USB and not the Internal HD.
Tried to figure out how to install to the local HD, and realized it was just a app for installing it there already on Solus.
Ran through the installer and it failed. Tried a few times and it kept failed.
More Google. Realized it could not be installed on my laptop with the current partition setup.
Read about GParted. Use TuxBoot to install to that same USB (only had 1, so had to overwrite my Solus boot)
Couldn't boot into GParted. Google. Changed a few bios settings.
Finally into GParted. Except now it was stuck at a login screen. Tried a view settings such as ForceVideo. No use.
Spent \~1 hour playing with it, the bios, flashing Gparted again using another app instead of TuxBoot.
All failing. Was going to decide to give up and just leave it as Windows at this stage, it was 12 at night.
Restarted Laptop, and now I could no longer get into Windows. Was just bringing me back to the Boot Manager screen whenever I tried to boot from HD. Thought it was my Bios changes, changed them back, no use.
Another 30 minutes of failing.
Flashed Solus again(I had my own laptop to do this btw)
Booted into it. Playing around again and realized GParted was actually there already installed on it!
Managed to partition my drive, ext4 and SWAP partitions.
Went to install Solus to HD via the internal software. Failed. Few random errors. Restarted and tried again. Re-partitioned the drives. Failed again.
Google. I had been trying the 'Assign mount points to partitions you had \*\*\*\*' - tried the 'Erase all content \*\*' option.
Success! Rebooted my machine, took out the USB, and I was in. A laptop fully booting a linux OS instead the bloated W10.
Played around with settings, including removing the only user accounts password, via teminal.
Failed. When I restarted it still prompted me, but the previous password no longer worked.
Decided to just reformat and re-install Solus again. No messing with Terminal password this time. Just via the settings to disable it. Sorted.
Restarted laptop a few times to make sure it would boot up ok with no errors (my dad is the type to ask what he does when asked about cookies on a website)
Tried to install a few apps. Chrome first. Failed via Terminal. Failed via .deb download. Failed via Software Updater.
Restarted again, and somehow Chrome was there, I only realized when I saved a link on the desktop and it prompted me to open with Chrome instead of FF. No idea how, but I didn't care.

So after around 5/6 hours of what I thought would be simple enough, the laptop was finally setup.
And I am actually so happy with it, it makes me wish I had another laptop to install another version of Linux on!
I was thinking my Mum's, but it's a touchscreen W10 :|

TL;DR - Went to install Solus instead of W10 with no idea of how Linux worked. Took me 5/6 hours but so happy with the result that I would happily do it all over again.

Window manager extensions written in Go
After being a long time user of tiling WMs, I just recently switched to cwm. I really like it, but for my workflow there are some key window focus and movement functionalities missing. To amend this I have written a set of small programs in go. They should work on any EWMH compliant window manager

I setup Evolution with Gmail but haven't used it. Today I realized that when Gmail is setup on Evolution, Google Calendar is also setup with it. I think it's nice convenient feature, but Google Calendar somehow accepted spams and Evolution sent it forward to my desktop.

[RANT] Fuck Linux (and NVIDIA for that matter)
Okay, not the best noscript but:

I really want to love Linux. I really do but I can't do that if fucking gnome seems more sluggish than Windows does. I also do love Pantheon, but it's hell in a bicycle to install it in other distros (Fedora for example) without breaking some kind of feature (like my hotkeys to volume and brightness which won't work if I use pantheon in Fedora 30). And thanks but I don't really like using elementary OS since every Ubuntu based distro in my hands starts to degrade in performance after a week or so.
But my problem isn't the DE's usability, features or look and feel. No. It's a much bigger one:

**NfuckingVIDEA fucking proprietary fucking drivers and also fucking nouveau and fucking battery management and fucking DKMS and fucking all.**

You do shit on your computer by **interacting** with your mouse/keyboard and **seeing** those interactions on the screen.
Now, I can see those interactions with every type of drivers, but do you also know what I can see? ScReEn TeArInG, and to this day after 1 year of battling with X configs and RANDR, i could not still figure out a practical solution. And yes, I know these Optimus laptops are the purge of your enjoyment on these UNIX waters, but lets be real: they exist since I can remember laptops (there's PCs with dual graphics from NVIDEA dating 10 years). How come in those 10 years the nouveau drivers can't work seamlessly? Or even proprietary drivers, how come they can't work like it does on Windows?
Yes, I can blacklist nouveau and disable power to the dGPU and work with only the iGPU, but ain't I losing functionality/speed? I mean, I should not dumb down my laptop to enjoy the bells and whistles of Linux and its derivatives.

Last but not least: I'm browsing some photos using the gnome thingy to see photos. After 15min of scrolling RAM usage was off the shelves, eating all the 8GB with mobile-taken photos. My pc couldn't even open htop to kill the bloody thing. How the fuck? Why?

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

My online community gave me a load of shit for this but I think it's beautiful!
I'm using two jumphosts (the first over true ssl, the second to the Virtual Machine Host which hosts the VMs) The VMs are like you may can see on the hostnames my onllineservices I use on a everyday basis. The Hypervisor is a Proxmox which was converted from a standard Debian image provided my my VPS Provider. I actually have lots of RAM and CPU usage left and latley began to do a Udemy course about Ansible to automate my environment.
But quick shell access with dynamic jumphosts and hostlists are always a good plan, especially if you're doing it in xpanes which can fokus single panes, move and maximize them to issue individual commands in case something goes wrong.

I Love my setup so far, but my journey is far from beeing over, actually the more I get into the advantages of Linux the more I get motivated
