I added a new piece of software to my arsenal today - Remmina and freerdp

I use my personal laptop at work where we have a fully windows environment. I had to have my laptop though, I was designing a website and using a windows desktop to rdc into the server to open the hyperV vm window was not cutting it, I needed vim, i3, and speed to be comfortable. I could just ssh from my Linux pc into my webserver and all my problems were solved. I began to use my laptop more and my windows desktop even less, to the point where the desktop is just a total waste of space... Until I gained some new responsibilities which forced me to use our companies very custom build inventory program built around MS Access and inaccessible without getting through active directory.

We had talked about trying things like Samba and OpenLDAP to have a more free and non-platform exclusive environment, but those are huge projects and they don't come without bugs. I started looking into using rdp this morning and immediately found Remmina. With freerdp to add the remote desktop protocol Remmina made it super easy to get into multiple servers since I already had a windows login to give it, I just specified the domain and it just works, I don't need to be a part of active directory to initiate rdp, I just have to have the credentials. Now I no longer need this desktop taking space on my desk, in fact there are numerous other perks to it. If I was using one of the companies laptops, not only would it be slower, if I walked around the plant I would periodically jump between routers and lose connection to AD long enough for it to break Access. With rdp all it does is lose connection to the server and it reconnects and everything serverside is left as it was, still connected. There wasn't a single config file I needed to configure either, compare that to joining a domain with samba. Running and rdc is way more efficient too, I was contemplating using a vm, which would not only require a license, but it would be extremely intensive, and better yet, I have a literal server to run stupid MS Access, 24gb of ram baby.

I'm just hoping this helps someone out. It is very possible to use Linux in a Windows environment, even if you have to piggyback and still use Windows, you can do it even better and still have nothing proprietary on your end.

Advertisements are killing privacy. Let's honour companies that opt out of aggressive Black Friday marketing.

So far, I've only found [Tutanota](https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/black-friday-hype/) not doing a deal, but surely there are more ethical companies that don't join this marketing lunacy? Please comment so we can support the companies that don't flood us with advertisements.

Gaming on Linux

I've been thinking about switching to Linux for a while, and eventually decided that everything except for gaming is better on Linux than Win10. I know about things like the fact that Steam supports some games on Linux and that Wine or virtual machines can run Windows games on other operating systems, bringing me to one question: Can I run every game that I do on my normal system on Linux without hindering performance? I'm hoping to finally find the answe to that question and either make the switch to Linux or wait until more games are supported on Linux.

I made a program that makes Debian Apt feel almost exactly like Arch Pacman!!

So there I was, decking out my 13-year-old PC with a fresh install of Lubuntu, trying to install some packages. I started typing in a package command but quickly realized I had just entered a Pacman command instead of an Apt command!! This gave me an idea! I quickly began work on a Bash noscript that would solve this problem for good! I made a Pacman-style frontend for Apt! Seven hours well-spent! :P

So jokes aside, I actually did complete this noscript. I ended up needing to write it twice because I corrupted the first version of it. I've ported all the major and most common commands so far. Everything down to the help and version dialog is Pacman-like! I know this sort of only satisfies a very niche group of Linux power users but I thought I'd post this somewhere for others to try out! The source code and packaged Debian installer package are available on my GitLab!

What made you switch?

I am writing this because I am not sure what my interests in Linux are, I know I like Manjaro KDE but I don't know why, so I want to know what you guys and gals like in Linux, and use your opinion to see if I like that as well.

1 thing for sure I know I like Linux over windows is the raw performance compared to windows its night and day just moving my mouse in games felt so different

search for laptop

Hi,

i need recommendations based on own experiences.

i am looking for a laptop.

OS : probably kde neon (i prefer kde)

what i do on the machine:
browsing, much writing, remoteaccess>ssh maintenance on servers, impress presentations, no gaming
display > matte..at least full HD ..around 14" would be nice
batterie-hours > + 6 hours
compatibility should be painless with linux
dockingstation ?
ports..no mini hdmi (ethernet)and so...i carry rather an "bigger" laptop then the adapters
under 2 kilos
price > not really an issue

what i have in mind: lenovos...i do have and use a 11 year old t61...and need a replacement now. speakers get intermittently broken and so on..:-(

so, yes i prefer lenovos and other business notebooks.

any hints are appreciated

Game bundle : feedback + does it arch?

Hi! I made 3 games and 2 utilities for Linux.

On my website ([www.efanomars.com](https://www.efanomars.com)) I provide (beside source tarballs) binary installers for both Debian and Arch based distros.

The Debian binaries are built on Debian 9 and I tested them in Debian 9 & 10, Ubuntu 18.4 and Linux Mint 19.

The Arch binaries are built on Manjaro. I've read somewhere that Manjaro provides packages that are a bit older than Arch, so I guess there shouldn't be any problem.

But to be sure could someone try to install the binaries (not build from the AUR) on an Arch minimal install and tell me if all the dependencies are listed?

Any feedback on the apps themselves is welcome, too.

Thanks

Fully install linux on old android phone

Is there a solution for this? I'm not talking about busybox, linuxonandroid or linux deploy, I'm looking to completely install a distro on an unlocked device like Rasbian on a Pi.
