A minimalist modern web browser

My laptop is a pretty old (2gb ram and an i5) tecra m9 and struggles to cope with most modern browsers if I have more than the browser open. I love browsers that allow minimal interfaces (no tab bar, no address bar etc) as well as minimal hardware resource requirement, so I tried qutebrowser. However, it looks like it doesnt support things like cross-platform, device sync ( I use a windows pc at work ) and streaming media from platforms like prime video, netflix and twitch.

Does anyone know of a web browser that has these features and doesn't require as much resource as chrome/chromium based browsers?

edit - Im running Ubuntu 18.04.3 if that matters

Default keyring?

I dont really know if this is the place for this but whatever.
So I'm running a linux virtual machine through chrome os, one day a prompt came up saying "unlock keyring" and asked for a password, I tried my root password and any variations, none worked, another thread suggested I try my birthdate but any variation on that didn't work either, I don't have accessories "password and encryption keys" or a network icon, and I cannot change my password because I have no idea what my old password was. Thanks in advance.

The fingerprint reader finally works on the latest Lenovo laptops!

I just found out that libprintf works with the latest firmware for the fingerprint reader.

I just tested it on a T490 which worked.

If you are curious and an arch user you can read about it here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T495#Fingerprint_Sensor

Debian's base-passwd (sid) and logging freedom

I hope nobody perceives this as a technical "question", it is not, it is more of a question in semantics. Some of the content about debian's vote on init freedom may be relevant but here is a demonstration of intrusion, I think.
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/eee59e/debian_votes_on_init_systems/

While upgrading base-passwd among other packages in sid it asked and "warned" that two users (log and s6log) do not match Debian's default and should be deleted. If I would ask why is Debian intrusive (by deleting not just adding) in /etc (sys-admin's personal domain) the answer would be "that's Debian". The next scale of questioning would be how would two additional users be a burden to any linux (unix) system? The 3rd line of questioning would have been what if my user name was systemd-log ... would the installer allow me "in"?

So in light of the init elections I am thinking logging freedom is becoming an issue as well.

Here is the output of the warnings and their wording. Note how it says software may not work if those logging accounts are not removed. Since when?

Suitable Linux-based OS for Low End Tablets?

I have a Dell Venue Pro 5056 and I wanna use Linux as a second system beside Windows. I installed Ubuntu as it has a large repository of drivers and packages that are pre-installed but still faces errors with the sound driver. Is there any other distros that can behave better on devices like these?

Guide to the Remnants of the Precursors Alpha test

**Download link: https://rayfowler.itch.io/remnants-of-the-precursors** (available Dec. 25th)

The final alpha release of Remnants of the Precursors will be available on Dec. 25th. RotP is a free Java-based modernization of the 1994 strategy classic, *Master of Orion*. It is not "inspired by"; it is not a "spiritual successor"; it is literally a feature-by-feature recreation of the original game with all new artwork, music, and writing. Because it runs in Java, cross-platform support for Windows, Linux and Mac is automatic.

Online discussion of the game is centralized at: https://www.reddit.com/r/rotp so that it is easier for me to find and respond to questions and complaints.

This game is completely free: no ads, no micro-transactions, no nothing. It collects no personal information, nor does it connect to any remote servers when you play. I hate that garbage, and so should you! Development costs are financed completely out of pocket by me with no expectation of any future return on this investment.

In late October, I did a podcast interview with Explorminate about the game. You can listen to that here: https://explorminate.co/remnants-of-the-precursors-interview-with-ray-fowler

In mid-December, I sent them an unfinished copy of the alpha for review. Their "Let's Play" is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onnsCi6ARmY

**Installing the Game**

1) Ensure Java 8 is installed on your PC. You can download Java for free at: https://www.java.com/en/download

2) Download the game executable, *Remnants.jar*, from the itch.io page at: https://rayfowler.itch.io/remnants-of-the-precursors (available Dec 25th)

3) Stick the game in its own folder. Installation is complete. Double-click to start.

**Notes for testers**

The recent.rotp file - The game maintains a save-game file for the current game, called "recent.rotp", in the same folder as the *Remnants.jar* file. When you hit "Next Turn", this file is automatically updated. When the Next Turn process completes, it is updated again. Whenever you encounter an error in the game, you will want to immediately make a backup copy of this file. Rename it to something that makes sense, like "CrashedDuringNextTurn.rotp" or something similar.

All game crashes will display a stark black screen with the Java exception stack printed on it. This is extremely valuable information for me to find and correct bugs! There will also be instructions on the screen about how to report this bug to me.

When you encounter an error, please screenshot the error, and then mail that and the recent.rotp file to me at rayfowler@fastmail.com. There will generally be daily updates to the game to fix bugs, if necessary.

It's also possible, but rare, for an error to instead cause a lockup when you hit "Next Turn". If this occurs, kill the game and send me the recent.rotp file.

Another type of bug might be behavioral, wherein the game plays just fine but something is not working as it did in the original game. Not all behavioral changes are bugs, however, since many exploits from the original game have been removed. These types of bugs will be generally noticed only by veterans of the original 1994 game.

**Everyone else**

However, if you just want to play the game, have fun! It's quite addictive because the original 1994 game was arguably one of the best 4X strategy games ever made.

Please be forgiving of bugs during the first week as this is a fairly complex game and some bugs may not appear until a game goes on longer and gets more complicated, which puts them beyond my ability to personally test them all before releasing.

**About the beta**

The game is about 99% feature complete, but there is still a bit of artwork, writing, graphic design and sound design remaining before we begin the beta. At that point, the code will be open-sourced and the text will be finalized for foreign language translations. The game is written in 100% Java, without any 3rd-party libraries, and anyone who knows Java will be able to customize it from that point.

Convincing a university to switch to linux after a cyber attack.

[Maastricht University (UM) has been hit by a serious cyber attack. Almost all Windows systems have been affected.](https://www.maastrichtuniversity.nl/news/cyber-attack-against-um) This happened today. Rumors say that the problem came from a Windows ransomware. Student's can't access their emails, Git and SVN servers.

As a student in Maastricht University myself I have always been ashamed of the fact that our university runs Windows on their infrastructure, but always felt like that couldn't be changed as "you shouldn't change what works". But clearly, it doesn't work.

This seems the perfect time to try to convince Maastricht University to switch to GNU/Linux, as they are probably willing to spend a lot of money to make sure this never happens again and this event is a proof that the current infrastructure isn't secure.

This is why I am now on reddit asking for advice. What would you recommend to do as a student to convince the university to do such change? Is it feasable/a good idea?

How to capture/record WebRTC livestreams from the web?

Is there a way to do it within browser or is it only possible via 3rd party app?

If so which app? (I'm using linux -- seems tcpdump can't be used because streams are encrypted)

Can't find any docs on this on the web.

Thanks.
