If you could redo systemd logging, how would you do it? (in search of ideas for my service manager)
Hello,
I am currently developing a service manager ([repo is here](https://github.com/KillingSpark/rustysd)). It tries to be compatible to systemd, on the unit-config and service-API side of things (the Readme contains more info if you are interested). On other aspects I try to ask myself if I can do better than what systemd provides.
I have seen that many people complain about the binary logging format systemd uses with journald, and I have very little experience in working with logs. So I was hoping I could get some insight from people with that experience.
1. What do you like about systemds logging?
2. What do you explicitly dislike?
3. Do you have any general pointers to resources that describe best-practices / big no-nos for logging?
(Please don't make this a systemd-hate thread, that's not what I am looking for ;))

The systemd-analyze security command gives your systemd service units an automated security rating. This is a good starting point for security hardening.
Continuation of X11 development?
Hi there. So, I know the arguments between X11 and Wayland can be a little contentious, so I'd like to start this off by saying this thread isn't intended to be one. The battles of opinion have already been fought ad nauseam, and some of us still find ourselves on the X side of the issue. I count myself as one of them.
So my question, and the actual purpose of this thread, is to ask about the future of X11. I know Red Hat is basically washing their hands of it feature-development wise, but the magic of open source is that a project is never really dead, or in feature freeze, so long as there's someone out there willing to inhereit it. Are there any groups out there planning to take the mantle? While X11 is very mature and mostly feature complete, there are a few things still to be done, such as perhaps better integration and promotion of the X_SECURITY extensions for bringing in per-app-isolation. An update to some of the current input limitations, better scaling support, etc?
Wayland's successorship is (to many) still highly questionable, so I think it would be a shame to see X rust out in the field while we wait for the hypothetical Wayland cow to come home. Any thoughts?

Hey,

so I recently switched to Linux(should be around 6 months by now): dual boot with sysprep Windows since I hate to be limited by OS to not using/ playing what I want and paid for- earlier I've been trying ubuntu on and off once every few years. I'd probably made a switch fully of list of incompatible stuff for me would work, but here we are.

Either way, I've joined multiple discord servers and mostly in bigger ones the majority of people are extremely vicious and toxic about everything: Windows features and availability of software(also super toxic about things that can be fixed with like 3 clicks), outraged about non-FOSS software( while they are still using things like steam), raging about developers(of both games and software) going with "don't blame linux, blame developers" which is partially true, but the biggest issue for me- even hate within community- about DE's- mostly gnome totally ignoring part that it's heavily customizable with just few extensions, and calling people stupid about using something instead of things they use, also toxicity towards Distros, and most annoyingly people blindly believing in something, being suspective about every single thing and changing everything just to suit their argument and all around being like edgy teenager, but when they get called on it they just say they "troll about stuff cuz it's part of linux community".

Like what the hell is that.... did it become so bad because Linux is considered "hackerman system" by everyone outside of the linux ecosystem or because it got better with gaming recently and a lot of dumb community got in or what's the deal about? It feels like playing League of legends all over again but even worse, because they are toxic about pretty much everything and not only the game. It totally breaks the myth of wholesome and helpful community and stuff..

Where do you post your pictures of your battlestations?
I'm pretty addicted to /r/battlestations for seeing people's set-ups but almost all of them are Windows-based.
I also spend way longer than I should browsing /r/unixporn looking at people's desktops.
So where is the Linux community posting their battle station pictures? I'd love to see some of the hardware set-ups you all have running.

Old Surface Pro 3 as Linux server
I have a laptop I don't use since the screen is cracked.
I was thinking to use it as server for various applications.
Anyone using similar system?
Which are the settings so that it never goes to sleep and that screen stays off?
Does it all make sense or will be unstable?
Alternatively will use
Windows 10 and on top Docker
Or
Proxmox with on top one or more VM with Ubuntu server (on one Docker on it)
Or
Ubuntu server with Docker on top.
Server will be
Mattermost plus Audio capability
Home Assistant
Maybe Motioneye for some cans.
Thoughs?
