With exFat native in 5.4, is seems to now be THE fstype for win/linux shared drives.

As a heavy VM and multi-boot user, it sems like the release of native exFat support in the 5.4 kernel is the holy grail I've been working around all these years. No user space drivers, no ntfs issues, shared seamless native mounts to multiple VM's and multi-boot systems with native drive performance.

I suppose it's somewhat new and may have some growing pains. But I wonder if there are other inherent limitations to exfat that have kept it limited to SD cards and such rather than on real drives. I'm hoping it was just the lack of kernel drivers (might as well bow to windows and use ntfs if you need a userspace driver anyway).

I haven't tried it yet, but hope to this weekend. Hopefully it's as simple as updating the kernel and mounting - I don't know if the distribs have to do something special to expose it.

I'm planning on setting up a home server in the next few days and I'm looking for recommendations on setups for storage. Links to articles are very much appreciated

A little background I have run home servers in the past but never ones with large data pools. I'm planning on running almost everything in docker and on Arch Linux. I'm comfortable with experimenting and learning.

USB flash as primary drive?

Wondering if it's possible to boot up a laptop that has no internal harddrive whatsoever, using a bootable USB flashdrive with something like ubuntu on it, but have the state persist.

I'm not talking about 'trial' sessions, I'm talking about persistant, regular OS setup, where you're installing/customizing everything. But that just happens to be all done from /media/somebody/sandiskcruzer...

Debian installation help

I downloaded a Kali image. I completed most of the installation process up until it gets to the point to switching the OS to Debian. When I try to continue from there, it says that it can't load the Windows OS. What am I doing wrong?

General linux installer and website revamp

With the advent of windows 7's death, I think now would be a good time to look at a linux newcomers first experience and how confusing it can be.
The first thing a person looking to install linux would do is probably to google something along the lines of "linux" or "how to install linux".
What I get when searching is, an advert for an ibm mainframe, a wikipedia article which lists the kernel language before anything newbie friendly and linux.org which sounds like a good place to start, and whilst a forum is helpful for the inquisitive, it isn't for the mainstream with a ton of adverts and front page forum posts about technical matters.

I don't know if this has been attempted, either ongoing or canned. But I propose a purpose built website to introduce the new user to linux. The design must be in keeping with modern standards set by the likes of google with material design.

Front and centre on the page would be a "download linux" button.
This program then initially explains to the user about desktop environments and how they define the look and feel of your os. It could state that these are seperate from the chosen distribution. It could then explain the idea of centralised repositories and how the backends differ between distros.

After the skippable introductory section you could land on a page which allows you to first pick your desktop environment from a horizontal checkbox thumbnail list with names and denoscriptions beneath them. You can click on a read more button beneath the icon for more details on the de including hi res screenshots and installed programs e.g. thunar and xfburn for xfce.
Below the desktop environment choice is a similar thumbnail list of all distributions with denoscriptions of how their individual package management and backend works. A lot of distros support a lot desktop environments but when you select a de that isn't on some distros, those distros would grey out and vice versa.
You then click next and procede to flashing the iso onto a usb with guided choices for graphics drivers and the like. this step could also be handled by distribution maintainers.

Notes:
-I think consistant modern branding is important, no pre 2000 looking website
-I think Linux is a snappier and much more well known name than GNU/ Linux despite the amazing work by Stallman and the fsf
-The reason I think it's important to get linux into the hands of the masses is that alot of people would genuinely love it, the mac users who dont want to spend an arm and a leg would love gnome. The "install a custom aero theme on windows with an edgy wallpaper" type would love kde. And the sadists would love xmonad. The thing that's stopping this is the knowledge barrier of entry which a website, installer and consistent branding would fix.
Not to mention how great it would be for all of mankinds technologically based achievements to be made on a free and open platform which people can change to their hearts content.
-Possibly a quicktrack option for less technically minded users where it just gives you debian and gnome with big buttons.
-When you select a de, the window decorations of the installer could morph into what the windows look like in that de.

Hi, everyone. Terminal users:

Does anyone have a solution to searching through images? I'm talking about *image-to-text* engines (if that's what they're called). That would be more suited to images with text.

Memes, document/ticket scans, etc. Do such engines exist, and are they available? Is there a way to search for an image by a string of text you remember that's in the image?

And what about generic photos where there is hardly any text? Do terminal users use some kind of tagging software? When the default `IMG-20201230.jpg` type filenames and directories just aren't enough, what do you do?

Sorting my months or trips is good, but then if you wanted to tag some images from multiple directories, how do you do it? When the file system isn't enough...

This is one of the times I'm jealous of my phone's GUI.
