My NVME SSD "Percentage Used:" has hit 224%. What's the highest you've got? Show me your abused SSDs.

So I've got this 250GB Samsung 960 EVO NVME SSD in a computer doing some SNMP performance monitoring where it writes to RRD files every one minute. For those of you not in the know, this is just performance monitoring metrics like disk/network/CPU utilization which is then used to draw graphs.

The system is constantly writing data. I'm abusing the hell out of this consumer-grade drive.

It's notable that the available spare erase blocks is still at 100%, so unless there's something else to wear out (the controller), there's not actually anything "worn out" about the drive at all. It's just that we've exceeded Samsung's warranty claim thresholds by 124%.

So I'm wondering who among you has a more abused SSD? Show us your numbers. Dump your smartctl output like below:

>sudo smartctl -a /dev/disk/by-id/nvme-Samsung_SSD_960_EVO_250GB_S3ESNXXXXXXXXXX

I have xubuntu 18.04-And Can't Install Think or Swim -I already Googled-Any solutions?

It's very odd, I can't seem to install Think or Swim, the linux version, and it's really odd. I've had to get virtual box to get it to work, but want to run it natively. Anybody out there that can shoot me an easy tutorial guide, without having to send my file to the ubuntu server or any of that nonesense. It should not be this difficult. Thanks in advance. Happy weekend to everyone.

Which is the fastest Ubuntu based distro ?

I don't know why but Ubuntu 18.04 stutters a lot on my laptop. I used Ubuntu 14.04 before on my more lower end laptop (4GB RAM, 256GB HDD) but that wasn't a problem.

I have 8GB RAM, 256 GB SSD on my current laptop but Ubutnu 18.04 is extremely slower than I expected.

Need suggestions for a faster Ubuntu variant. Thank you.

force laptop to use battery instead of power per schedule

Is this possible to do in linux on a laptop? Basically to set up a schedule where at certain hours of the day, even though the power is connected, tell the laptop to use battery power instead of external.

Shellinabox and let's encrypt

Hello,

I am unable to run the certs from lets encrypt, it always default to the self signed certificate in /var/lib/shellinabox. I have a symlink the certs from let encrypt and deleted the self signed certificate, every time to restart shellinabox the self signed certificate resuscitates.

I found some documentation, but very unclear... Has anyone done this setup?

PS: The reason I am doing this is so that I have a terminal at work to study for the LPIC series.

FW Update Manager doesnt work in T490s

Hi,

I tried to Update the ME Consumer Update of my T490s via fwupd. After reboot it loads the update Screen but does not install anything. I see the Lenovo Logo and the "please wait while we install the update". After 2 hours nothing installed.

I just see the "press any key to continue" If i press a key, the thinkpad reboots.

What can i do?

Alternatives to MacOS features?

I want to make a development pc, similar to the Mac I use at work, but I don't want to pay the cost of a Mac. I don't have any preference for any Linux flavour or desktop, so feel free to suggest anything you want that seems relevant.
There are just a few features that I know I would miss from going away from a Mac, and I'm sure there must be Linux alternatives to them. They are the following:
- Super-based shortcuts for copy, paste, close tab, close app, change window, etc, hopefully at a system level (not just for certain apps).
- Ability to switch the super and alt keys, again on a system level (this could probably be achieved using a third party app).
- Ability to launch the application finder using super-space (I've seen some Linux distros which already do this, like Elementary OS).
- A preview-like application, which can show a preview of a text, image or pdf file at least, that can be shown or hidden just by pressing space, and which can jump from one file to another using the arrow keys. This is probably the most complicated to have in a Linux system, but I really need something at least similar to this.
- A file manager which can navigate through folders using the arrow keys.
- The ability to select files with a single mouse click, and to execute then with a double click. I don't think I could get used to executing files on a single click.

Can you help in finding the perfect distro/desktop/apps to achieve something like this?

Keyboard and mouse event hooks

Hello!

I decided to try to write an application that can rebind keyboard and mouse keys or play macros if a certain key is pressed.

I want my application to work both on Linux and Windows. The target audience is people who play games, but it could also work for people who do work and have a mouse with multiple buttons.

Similar applications already exist but they don't support Linux.
Just a few that supports my Logitech hardware:

* Logitech Options (for my MX Master 3)
* Logitech GHUB (for my G604)
* SteelSeries Engine (for SteelSeries keyboards)

Apart from the fact that they don't support Linux, I need to run 3 different applications to do essentially the same thing.

I looked into how I could achieve something similar and I found that on Windows I can set up low level hooks for mouse and keyboard events.

Inside my hook handler function I have the choice to send the event to the next hook or just "swallow" it. If I swallow an event with my application, other applications will essentially not register the event.

I tried looking for something similar on Linux, but so far the only way I found was to call `xmodmap`.

My question is: Is there any API that would let an application from userspace hook into the keyboard and mouse input events, then have the possibility to "swallow" that event so that other applications would not see it?
