Advantages of Wayland over Xorg?

So I have been hearing alot about wayland, can someone explain the hype over it and why it is so hyped?

I use arch and have never had to install a wayland dependancy, so should I switch? (xfce4, brave browser, a few tools from xfce4-goodies, vscode. Dell e6400 Latitude)

No audio recording possible? (however, my destiny is to be the best youtuber ever though)

Hello,

Yet another reddit noob that yell for help. And yes, I have been stuck for months, and yes, I have tried anything I could find on the web. My brain will get absorbed by a black hole soon if I cannot overcome this problem.

I desperately need to find the solution to be able to create viral videos and be able, in a few months, after I create my channel to have more subscribers than Pewdipie and T-Series ***REUNITED***.

*And here is the problem*: I cannot record anything from my computer. Using my internal speaker, or a headset connected to bluetooth, or the same headset connected via a jack, or a new microphone connected via usb: NO audio is captured via any software whatsoever! If I open a sound recorder, or an application to "display" sound like ingot, I see nothing when recording.

I tried on the windows partition and had no problem.

It used to work fine, I used to be able to skype flawlessly.

How could I follow my path to fame and fortune, without your precious help? **How could I troubleshoot this to be able to record sound?**

Here are some info about my system, if that can help:

Syncing podcasts between iOS and Linux - ideas?

Note - this isn’t a support request, I’m looking for ideas or suggestions.

I’m in a somewhat untenable position of using iOS for my mobile device (I’ve got no intention of going back to Android anytime soon, please don’t suggest this) and Linux on my main laptop.

When I used to have an Android I could use gPodder on the phone and on my desktop, but having an iPhone makes this impossible because no iOS apps can sync with gPodder.

Has anyone else ever figured out a way to use an iOS podcast client with a desktop Linux application, could be a media player etc? I’m using Spotify as a workaround at the moment but I don’t like their interface for podcasts.

I bought a new HP laptop and installed POP OS on it and well my results are a little mixed.

So I'm in the process of trying out Linux again and before I install anything on my main rig I wanted to try it out again on a cheap laptop. POP OS being my preferred to try right now.

Well POP OS installed okay just one problem is that the Wifi didn't work. Apparently my WiFi card was the realtek rtl8821ce and that one apparently has issues with Linux from what I read. I could get the Ethernet to work but that kinda defeats the purpose of a laptop in some regards.

So I did try to install a realtek driver for my laptop but nothing worked. If I can't get it to work I'm just gonna return the laptop. Any help is nice.

How to edit menu items openELEC 8.0.4

Trying to take the YouTube Add-on, and put it on the sidebar.

This is for my grandfather's new media center PC, so trying to make things as intuitive and simple as possible.

I found [this video on customizing the home screen](http://youtube.com/watch?v=esPTXwTxljA) however I don't get these same settings on the version of Kodi I'm using.

Not sure if I need a skin change, or im missing some crucial setting option.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Want to get rid of windows for more space.

Hey all. I was given an HP Stream 14 but the thing only has 32GB of storage. Windows 10 basically takes up all the spaces and leaves me with just little to nothing. I have never used Linux but heard it used less space but also that there are many types of Linux.

I was wondering if anyone can help me out to choose which one to install on this laptop. I will only be using it for web browsing and watching YouTube, Netflix. Storing documents and photos.

Thanks if anyone can help.

Can BorgBackup restore hardlinked files correctly?

If I have 1 file hardlinked to 5 different folders which are all backed up, and then I attempt to restore them from backup, will hardlink associations also be restored, or will I end up with 5 separate copies of the file?

How we optimised our build system using umake

Over the past few months we worked on a project to improve our build times. We wanted to replace our makefile based build with something modern and fast. We compared multiple tools such as google bazel, facebook buck, ninja and plain old cmake. At the end of the day we figured that none of them matched our exact needs.

Eventually we reached tup, which looked very promising. The issue with tup was the lack of strong remote caching. Initially we wanted to improve tup to match our needs. After a while we figured that we should just build something new. With all the good stuff that we took from tup and strong caching like sccache from mozzila. The result was a brand new tool - umake. It is fast (really fast), easy to use and correct. No more building the same binary in the office if someone else already built it. No more running make -j10 and getting broken results. It just works, and it works fast.

I'll be happy to hear your thoughts on the topic.

For more details check out: https://drivenets.com/blog/the-inside-story-of-how-we-optimized-our-own-build-system/ https://github.com/grisha85/umake/
