Life time Windows user switching to Linux

Hello all, I hope I picked the right subreddit to express my thoughts and feelings towards...

I've had been only using Windows for all I can remember, since I was a little baby boy playing old DOS games back when Windows 98 was still relevant. I had this mindset that for PCs it can only be Windows, and there is nothing else.

However I during my teenage hood I did peek into Macs and Mac OS. It's the curiosity and the drive to see something new that pushed me to do some hackintoshing back then. But the amount of issues I faced just straight pushed me back to Windows for another decade.

I'm of the nature that I don't like to stick with the same stuff, that i constantly need or want to see something new. Microsoft did entice me by always bringing a new Windows release; Windows XP - Vista - 7 - 8 and finally 10. I all used them, and I enjoyed seeing the new stuff brought and the constant changes. However Windows 10 is now nearly 5 years old and I've been getting that drive of seeing something new again.

I've been familiar with Linux back before I did the Hackintoshing in the early 10s, but like a typical Windows peasant my feelings towards it was that it was only for the Server and Backend side and all just CLI. I still remember the Bus' "Next Stop"-Announcer display booting up with all the verbose(?) glory with the 2 or 3 Linux penguins on top.

It's only after 2 years ago that I got introduced to Ubuntu from my university. I played around with it on a VM. While I liked it I didn't really think of it being that practical, since I won't be able to play my Steam games and all the compatibility concerns with my daily applications. Plus every guide to whatever I find is CLI which somewhat scarred me off, being used too just GUI solutions.

Fast forward a bit after having seen Linus Tech Tips' video about getting Steam games to run using Proton, and after digging deeper finding about about Lutris, this is where I started to get hooked in! I decided to install Ubuntu on my Laptop first to see how things would work out after using it for some time.

And I gotta say, the experience was decent, if it wasn't for the fact that their AppShop was somewhat useless. For example, I installed Eclipse from there and the app crashes or glitches constantly. I couldn't even compile a simple Hello World program in Java.. I gave up on that, and tried installing whatever I found from the official eclipse website and that worked flawlessly.

This isn't the only, I kept running into issues and bugs and eventually started looking for other distros. Thats where I felt into that rabbit hole of how many distros exist, what they're based off, what Desktop environment they use, etc etc. Eventually I decided for Pop!\_OS, becaue in all honesty I liked the GNOME Desktop and I felt I should stay with Debian because I keep reading it's supposedly a very stable branch. About GNOME I liked it a lot, it was definitely something new and fresh change from the classic Windows I've been used to since Kindergarten.

So I had installed it and seems like all my previous issues have been gone! Their Pop\_Shop proved me to be more useful as the stuff I installed from on my first days worked out of the box. And this what I like, having stuff just work without getting troubled. After trying couple games and having witnessed how easy and with zero effort it runs them perfectly I decided that's it. This operating system will be installed on my main PC. I backed up few files and decided to wipe everything from my main SSD for a fresh new install with Pop!\_OS.

First days of it using the os on my main pc I noticed the terrible screen tearing, since I was on an NVidia Card but luckily I managed to get that fixed quickly. Next thing I noticed is my sound driver somewhat acting weird, like producing a pop noise everytime i start a new sound session. I found a fix for that but after some updates it reappeared again. Though after a while I didn't bother anymore. I was genuinely pleased by the whole presentation, by whole
everything is new and fresh, by the fact I was gone with the annoying ads- and malware filled installers, gone with Cortana and the weird Microsoft trackings.

Off to a good start, even though it was somewhat bumpy with the screen tearing. I started getting more and more used to the entire desktop. Installed a nice new icons pack, tried some themes and Gnome extentions, tried couple new apps and just enjoying the fact that any game I tried running just straight up worked out of the box, thanks to Lutris and Steam's Proton. This is great! I've been running a Linux based OS for nearly half a year now and I've been all but just pleased with the experience, as it provides exactly what I'm looking for. Like I still get to tinker around and explore my curiosity on a new adventure.

Now playing with the thought of hopping to an Arch based distro. I hear that you'll get the most to do date version of anything there.. I still found some very outdated/broken apps on the Pop\_Shop like for example NetBeans, BUT still fixable by installing from Flathub (except I wanna debug C/C++ then it's NOT an option) or from the App's Website.

From my standpoint I believe the people are afraid if something just doesn't work out of the box. Having to to spend hours or even days to try to fix something that shouldn't have been broken in the first place is the first and foremost complaint when it come to people wanting to try a Linux based operating system. That was with my case in Ubuntu, can't count how many problems I kept facing there. Which is sad since that's the most known OS around my circle. The first impression people'll get is that Linux is a buggy mess and just don't bother with it anymore! Don't get me wrong Ubuntu is still great for what it is, I just wished there was someone testing and maintaining the apps before putting them up potentially broken.

I've been using Pop!\_OS on my main PC for about 3 months now, am looking forward what the future will bring! Anyways thank you for reading this far and I'm looking forward to a great new time with Linux.

Linux Noob Here : I added the Snap and Flathub repo but I have issues when I try to launch apps.

Is it normal that I have trouble launching Flathub apps? It seems like I can install apps but I can't launch them through shortcuts and the only one I managed to launch took 2 minutes and I needed to go in the terminal.

Just found out about osboxes.org . Takes a lot of hassle out of trying linux distros

There's virtualbox and vmware preinstalled hard drive image files for heaps of distros. The username and password are a little hard to find. They are username: osboxes and password: [osboxes.org](https://osboxes.org).

I added a new drop entry to my IP tables firewall and you wouldn't believe the number of connections dropped from the 10 bad actors countries.

I'll start off by saying I run a few gaming servers on my Linux server at my house. I kept having issues with cheaters on the two games. I got tired of dealing with it and decided to look into dropping packets destined from specific geographic areas.

1. I built a noscript that pulls down the aggregated IP range list from 10 what I consider "BAD ACTOR" countries. (Today this list total was 21033 aggregated IP ranges)
2. I installed and created a hash table in my kernel called "badactors" using *ipset*.
3. I created a firewall rule to drop and log with the label "BADACTOR" to my kernel log.
4. To watch the log I open a new TMUX session and issued the command

tail -n 100 -f /var/log/kern.log | grep "BADACTOR"

I got it all working about an hour ago. In space between then and now, it has logged 156 dropped connection attempts. I used the IP WHOIS lookup to verify some of the connections.

This is a serious eye-opener for me. I mean you hear in the news places are actively trying to hack the US. But until you see this kind of RAW data you don't realize how prevalent it actually is.

Linux "underground" youtubers?

I follow some channels that talks about about linux and more underground stuff, like window managers, noscripting, customisation, suckless software, etc.

Some of the channels I watch include:

Remote Learning

With the coronavirus mess going on, all of my uni courses are moving online.
Some of them are using this proprietary program called "zoom", right off the bat things look fishy as the official instructions call for downloading a binary from their website (even though for example in Arch Linux there's a package in the AUR).
Does anyone know how much of a spyware program this is? If so, isn't it just a better idea to dump this all in a VM?

The ARM laptop future and software compatibility

I am pretty excited about how personal computing will change due to the move towards ARM chips in laptops. The new Pinebook Pro https://www.pine64.org/pinebook-pro/ is an example, and I’ve also seen predictions that Apple will move in that direction.

Even though I used Macintosh during the PPC to Intel transition, there are many things I don’t know about the hardware and OS in relation to software compatibility.

If i got the pinebook, what would the state of software compatibility be? Would it be able to install and run Blender, Libre Office or games with Steam Proton without a compatibility layer? Would Wine work to install for example MS Word or games like Diablo 2? Where is the limit for compatibility?

Also, what do you think about the transition towards ARM in general? What are the benefits and consequences for personal and professional computing?

A lot of the links at FLOSSManuals.net are dead

Hi,

Not sure where to post this, but GNU.org recommends [flossmanuals.net](https://www.flossmanuals.net/), and a lot of the links on that site are dead. E.g. both the pdf and epub links for downloading the Firefox guide give 404s.

The site might just be abandoned, I don't know -- it doesn't look like it's been updated anytime recently. I just thought I'd mention the dead links, since it's sponsored by GNU.

Exclusively Using Terminal Apps

For those of you who almost, if not, exclusively use terminal applications, how have you been finding the experience as opposed to using a DE/GUI? What distro is best to use for this? What are your reasons for doing so?
