Remake – GNU Make 4.3 with profiling, a debugger, and .

In a recent article on GNU Make 4.3 (link deleted because reddit seems to think this is post is advertising for that) I read that GNU Make 4.3 can speed up GNU/Linux builds greatly.

Has anyone verified this?

As a result, I updated and released the fork of that I have which includes hooks to profile a build, and has a complete debugger in it (although most of the time the better tracing that is in there is enough).

The most recent version has a feature though that I really like and use a lot which is adding an option to look in parent directories for a Makefile if none is found in the current directory.

You can download the sourcecode from either [sourceforge](https://sourceforge.net/projects/bashdb/files/remake/4.3%2Bdbg-1.5/) or from [github](https://github.com/rocky/remake/releases). Both have a full list of the release notes.

Custom software log analyzer tool

Hi,

My job is to analyze log files of custom made programs in Linux on Linux

I am the first and for now the only one in the company that does this....

I mostly use ack/grep and vscode for viewing and analyzing. These log files.

I was wondering if there was a tool in which I can search for multiple keywords and these lines would be displayed in a different color per keyword. And where I could save list of keywords for faster analyzing the same log files from different accounts....

Or if anyone here has another suggestion on how to tackle this or be more productive...... ?

Other programs? Self made noscripts? .....

Are there any Magic Mouse alternatives for Linux ? AKA: is there an escape strategy to the mouse scroll wheel ?

Hi everyone! I am going back to Linux as my main desktop operating system, after several year of OSX, anyway I always used Linux as the main development env.
Now, while the trackpad has a very nice pixel precision scrolling that’s not the case of the mouse scroll wheel, which is always fixed to the scroll by lines tick also on more advanced devices like the Mx master and it’s free spinning wheel, which under Windows works smoothly.

So, I think that the only solution to have a more granular wheel scrolling is using an external trackpad or a touch mouse, do you own or you know some Linux compatibile devices like this one ?
I know that the Magic Trackpad 2 or the Magic Mouse 2 should be compatible, the question is: Is the emulates wheel scrolling by pixel (like the laptop trackpad) or it will be driven by the mouse subsystem emulating the scroll wheel ?

Thanks in advance for your replies :)

KDE Plasma Windows Draw Off-Screen

Hey there everyone,

I've had an issue I can't solve and I can't find an explanation for:
Sometimes I get windows drawn outside the screen area ... and I can't drag them back.
This is a bigger problem when the noscriptbar is drawn too high.
No amount of \[alt\]+Drag has worked and there's no 'move' item in the taskbar context menu.

No screenshot, unfortunately, as this has been happening when working on classified stuff.

My specs (from KInfocenter):

Debian GNU/Linux 10
KDE Plasma Version: 5.14.5

KDE Framework Version: 5.54.0

Qt Version: 5.11.3

Kernel Version: 4.19.0-8-amd64

OS Type: 64-bit

I'd love a solution but any info could be useful - all help appreciated :)

Can we actually measure the popularity of Linux distros for desktop usage ?

I know distrowatch and sites like are TOTALLY inaccurate(it's like saying BMW is the most popular car just cuz you live in Russia).Anyway, the most obvious thing to me at least is to compare their popularity and for that I used Alexa siteinfo(what Amazon bought and stole their name for their Virtual assistant) and I found it to be pretty good detailling some stuff:

1.Ubuntu is the most popular BY FAR!Who'd have thought ?(the 2715 most popular website in the WWW)-[https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/ubuntu.com](https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/ubuntu.com) . The derivatives are a LOT lower except Ubuntu MATE for some reason

2.Debian(the 8932 most popular website)- [https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/debian.org](https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/debian.org)

3.Linux mint(10483th place)- [https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/linuxmint.com](https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/linuxmint.com)

4.Kali Linux (10366th place, all those indians youtubers maybe, I dunno. I never thought the Cyber Security fied is so big)- [https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/kali.org](https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/kali.org)

5.and shockingly, the 5th place, gathering all the Linux gurus out there Arch Linux(12750th most popular website)- [https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/archlinux.org](https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/archlinux.org)

What shocked me is that Manjaro is actually less popular than Arch by quite a bit( [https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/manjaro.org](https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/manjaro.org) 23402th place) BUT the most important thing out there: Fedora is shockingly low in terms of website statistics, the chosen distro for the GNOME project AND Wayland, [https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/getfedora.org](https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/getfedora.org) at 90512th(at least it's a nice binary number) place

Can’t connect Ubuntu server to WiFi or Ethernet

For some reason, during setup and after set up I can’t connect my new Ubuntu server to the internet. It says Ethernet disconnected. Could it be a driver issue? I can’t even use ifconfig, netstat, of rfkill cause the packages aren’t natively installed. I’ve set up an Ubuntu server before on an raspberry pi 3 B+ and never had this issue

Windows Virtual Machine to completely replace Windows

Hello everybody,

thanks to this and other similar subs I recently installed ubuntu to the side of windows 10 on my laptop. I am really liking the linux experience and I would completely switch to ubuntu if I could. The only problem is that I really need some programs that only runs on windows (adobe stuff, fusion 360 and a few others memory-greedy programs).

My question is:

could a virtual machine running windows 10 on ubuntu be good enough for my needs?

Could I obtain comparable results in terms of performance?

Thank you very much for your help (**again :)**)

Cura on chromebook

I recently bought a 3D printer and I would like to use Cura on my chromebook. Is there a way where I could download it through the Linux beta on the chrome book?

I know that you can download Linux apps through the Linux beta but the Cura Linux download is a weird ÿ type of file. So if anyone knows how to download Cura could you explain how to do it.

Should I put /home or / on the fastest drive? Should I encrypt both?

/e Sorry, I put this on the wrong subreddit. I'm not going to delete it because it's useful information, at least for me. If it needs to go, any moderator please feel free e/

I have an NVMe (500gb, PCIe4) and an SSD (1T), and I'm wondering how I should partition my file system on a brand new system. I'll be using Manjaro, and my plan is to have the system and the home folder on separate drives.

What's the recommended setup? Home on the fastest drive, or system on the fastest drive? I would think home, since that has all the user files, but does having the OS on the faster drive improve performance?

I'm also probably going to encrypt the drives. Do I need to encrypt the system, or just my home drive? I'm also curious if encryption will affect performance on the drive. I know there's a delay to encrypt it when booting, but is there a general performance hit when dealing with encrypted media? Is it worth it?

Audio renderer error in Linux(Ubuntu).

I'm geting the following error when I try to play a youtube video in my Linux system (Ubuntu 14.04 to be precise)

'Audio renderer error. Please restart your computer.'

If I restart, the error pops up again so that doesn't seem to be a permanent solution.

And the random Google searches only show ways that pertain to a Windows system or a Chromebook.

Anybody else has any idea what should I do?
