What are some useful or cool (possibly obscure) Linux programs you could suggest?

For example, I found `exa`, an `ls` alternative, as well as `htop`, a `top` alternative. I am curious if there's anything that might have fallen under the radar that any of you would be willing to share that does something useful, cool, or even one that solves a very niche problem. It's totally okay if you're plugging your own program, too!

Is Swap Space being cleared automatically? If yes at which step?

Hi Folks,

this is probably a quiet basic question, but I am currently unsure about it.

When pages which were swapped out to swap space, are being swapped back in because they are needed in RAM, are the pages cleared from the swap space?
Or will we have the information twice, once in swap space and once in RAM?

Another question,
When a process which has pages related to it currently residing on swap space, is **normally** terminated,
does the pages in swap space get cleaned/cleared or does the info reside in swap space until it gets overwritten?

Appreciating any infos!
Thanks a lot in advance!!

Your CLI alias commands

Come on, if you use the terminal on a daily basis you must have some genius alias commands that save time or just helpful.

here's a few of mine:

clear clipboard

`alias fuck="killall pboard"`

see my ip

`alias ip='ifconfig | grep inet'`

pretty git log

`alias gitlog="git log --stat --pretty=short --graph"`

serves ./index.html and opens in browser immediately

`alias serve="echo Live on: http://localhost:8000 && python -m SimpleHTTPServer && open http://localhost:8000"`

IOWAIT in glances application

Since I discovered the glances application I have been noticing a lot of IOWAIT warnings. I suspect it may be due to the "nice" statement I have placed on each of my 6 ARK Survival Evolved processes. The server is already running an SSD. So would anyone be able to confirm that setting a negative nice value on several processes could be contributing to IOWAIT warnings? As a test, I will just remove the nice line from the arkmanager config and let the processes start with a normal priority and see if the IOWAIT goes away.

I’m new here - Ubuntu & Raspbian

Hello!

I’m new here. I’ve been using UNIX & Linux for years.

I’m partial to Ubuntu Server and Raspbian Server (command-line only). I’ve got couple servers with XFCE to help with end-of-day operations.

Our work is also running Debian and AIX (UNIX) systems.

Welcome to r/linux rants and experiences! This megathread is also to hear opinions from anyone just starting out with Linux or those that have used Linux (GNU or otherwise) for a long time.

Let us know what's annoying you, whats making you happy, or something that you want to get out to r/linux but didn't make the cut into a full post of it's own.

For those looking for certifications please use this megathread to ask about how to get certified whether it's for the business world or for your own satisfaction. Be sure to check out r/linuxadmin for more discussion in the SysAdmin world!

_Please keep questions in r/linuxquestions, r/linux4noobs, or the Wednesday automod thread._

Comparison of different Linux Distribution

*(hope I chose the correct flair?)*

I am trying to put together a list with the most common Linux distributions (Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Arch, Manjaro, Suse) and their unique features and USPs. I am sure this will help many users and especially people new to linux.

I do know Manjaro is based on Arch but there are a few mentionable differences. I am trying not to compare other Debian based distros like Linux Mint or Ubuntu.

I unfortunately do have some problems with Suse and trying to find more USPs for each distro. I am not looking to find the "best" or "most advanced" distro, since in my opinion something like this does not exist, this should just be a comparison list.

**Debian:**

\- Outdated packages but very stable, especially for mission critical projects

\- Release support about 5 years

\- Huge Userbase, many Distros based on Debian

\- apt package Manager

**CentOS:**

\- Outdated but very stable, especially for mission critical projects

\- Trying to "clone" RHEL

\- Release support about 10 years

\- yum Package Manager

**Fedora:**

\- Very oriented to free software, can be easiliy changed in newer versions though

\- yum Package manager

**Arch:**

\- Rolling Release

\- Bleeding Edge, definately not a server distribution

\- Very performant but sometimes not stable

\- AUR

\- Good Documentation

\- pacman Package Manager

**Manjaro:**

\- based on Arch

\- Packages stay in testing 1-2 weeks longer than in plain arch

**Suse:**

\- ?

Matrix effect

I would like to know some good "matrix effect" programs. I have `cmatrix` but it is only using one shade of green which makes it really ugly, so if you know any better program that would be nice. I'd like only raining characters, preferably random keyboard characters, but others are also okay. As already mentioned different shades of green so the rain strings are fading would be really nice. Any matrix screensavers would be nice too (if possible on my RPi), so it can look like I am being the ultimate hackerman while just not doing anything. Any other programs making me look like a hackerman would be nice too, currently I am using `hollywood` for that purpose.

Thanks in advance for answering my question!

Oh, and I am using raspbian on a r/raspberry_pi

Some fun AR-Software for Linux?

As some of my friends are doing some funny Argumented Reality videos using their phones or Mac I'm looking around if the Linux-World has some programs which allow to add sunglasses, flowers or other filters to faces in media materials?

A stable Linux distribution for doing taxes?

I would like to have a Linux distribution installed on a USB stick, which is very stable and secure. It will be used to do taxes on it and the reason why I don't use my main system is, that I don't want to have software from the government on it.

But the important thing is, that I will only use the stick 1x a year. I have bad experience with Arch Linux and distros, which are based on it (for this particular purpose), because there are always update conflicts if the last update was like few months ago and it costs a lot of time solving those.

What I need:

* Working out-of-the-box
* Wifi support
* Simple OS updates (maybe secure updates only)
* Stable OS (it has to be stable and should work without human interventions)
* LibreOffice (or other simple office suite for bureaucracy)
* Should fit on a 8GB stick

Thanks a lot for your help
