When my UCaaS startup failed a few years ago, I decided to Open Source all my work. It has been a monumental task, but I’m finally getting somewhere.

Comparison of different Linux Distribution

*(hope I chose the correct flair?)*

I am trying to put together a list with the most common Linux distributions (Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Arch, Manjaro, Suse) and their unique features and USPs. I am sure this will help many users and especially people new to linux.

I do know Manjaro is based on Arch but there are a few mentionable differences. I am trying not to compare other Debian based distros like Linux Mint or Ubuntu.

I unfortunately do have some problems with Suse and trying to find more USPs for each distro. I am not looking to find the "best" or "most advanced" distro, since in my opinion something like this does not exist, this should just be a comparison list.

**Debian:**

\- Outdated packages but very stable, especially for mission critical projects

\- Release support about 5 years

\- Huge Userbase, many Distros based on Debian

\- apt package Manager

**CentOS:**

\- Outdated but very stable, especially for mission critical projects

\- Trying to "clone" RHEL

\- Release support about 10 years

\- yum Package Manager

**Fedora:**

\- Very oriented to free software, can be easiliy changed in newer versions though

\- yum Package manager

**Arch:**

\- Rolling Release

\- Bleeding Edge, definately not a server distribution

\- Very performant but sometimes not stable

\- AUR

\- Good Documentation

\- pacman Package Manager

**Manjaro:**

\- based on Arch

\- Packages stay in testing 1-2 weeks longer than in plain arch

**Suse:**

\- ?

Matrix effect

I would like to know some good "matrix effect" programs. I have `cmatrix` but it is only using one shade of green which makes it really ugly, so if you know any better program that would be nice. I'd like only raining characters, preferably random keyboard characters, but others are also okay. As already mentioned different shades of green so the rain strings are fading would be really nice. Any matrix screensavers would be nice too (if possible on my RPi), so it can look like I am being the ultimate hackerman while just not doing anything. Any other programs making me look like a hackerman would be nice too, currently I am using `hollywood` for that purpose.

Thanks in advance for answering my question!

Oh, and I am using raspbian on a r/raspberry_pi

Some fun AR-Software for Linux?

As some of my friends are doing some funny Argumented Reality videos using their phones or Mac I'm looking around if the Linux-World has some programs which allow to add sunglasses, flowers or other filters to faces in media materials?

A stable Linux distribution for doing taxes?

I would like to have a Linux distribution installed on a USB stick, which is very stable and secure. It will be used to do taxes on it and the reason why I don't use my main system is, that I don't want to have software from the government on it.

But the important thing is, that I will only use the stick 1x a year. I have bad experience with Arch Linux and distros, which are based on it (for this particular purpose), because there are always update conflicts if the last update was like few months ago and it costs a lot of time solving those.

What I need:

* Working out-of-the-box
* Wifi support
* Simple OS updates (maybe secure updates only)
* Stable OS (it has to be stable and should work without human interventions)
* LibreOffice (or other simple office suite for bureaucracy)
* Should fit on a 8GB stick

Thanks a lot for your help

WARNING: I AM A NITPICKER. One of the things I hate about linux, it doesn't allow for fast right-click clicking. It's just not possible for various distros I tested. Is there some distro in the universe that does allow this?

Does easytag still work?

I used to use easytag to clean up CD rips, etc and it worked fine. However, I've not used it for a couple of years, but needed it the other days. Downloaded it into my Ubuntu 19.10 and gave it a good. It seems to hang completely when connecting to musicbrainz. Seems the latest version of the program is 4 years old. So, is there an alternative program or a fix?

Folding @ home client for Covid-19.

I downloaded the programs shown and joined the Linux Mint team. I see nothing downloading at the moment and back some years ago, I remember having to go find the download for the assignment. Is this still what I need to do, or will it just automatically download the Assignment as it comes available? I assumed that if there was any current workload, it would have me take a portion. Thanks, y’all.

Fake UVC loopback device

Hey,

I'm trying to figure out a way how to create a fake UVC device on Linux. I'm learning android app development and I'm using Genymotion as an emulator. Unfortunately Genymotion only accepts UVC webcams as camera input for the emulated device. I tried using OBS-virtualcam but it only creates a dummy one and not UVC.

I've looked into v4l2loopback with uvc-gadget but don't seem to get it to work. My need would be to start a stream of a video file looped and be able to feed that as the camera inside the emulated device. I saw some other related pieces of software like g\_streamer and ViVi(?) but no idea on how to make this work. It is not easy I know but it would help me out greatly.

So something like: ffmpeg->v4l2loopback->????->uvc device.

How could I achieve this? Or is there a good android emulator that can take a virtual webcam or file as video camera input?

What usability/workflow helpers do you use? (e.g. launchers, custom homepages, workspaces, autocompletion)

Describe all those little programs that make you feel like a ninja!

I personally don't use any yet, but I do want to start streamlining my workflow on my fresh install. Hopefully I'll be able to draw inspiration from all of your setups.

If you've shared it before on /r/unixporn or /r/usabilityporn, feel free to link your post.
