This week we worked really hard on a lot of important backend stuff that’s not so user-visible but will pay dividends down the road, such as launching applications using cgroup slices. We als…
How hard is it do decrypt Wifi traffic if password is known?
Howdy,
I've got a question about security in household Wifis. I've seen people offering WPA2 encrypted Wifi with SSID such as "The password is internet" to provide free internet access. They argue that it is better to have the WPA2 encryption between clients and APs than to offer Wifi without encryption?
How hard would it be to decrypt the traffic using wireshark?
Is their argument valid?
thanks for answering :)

Best WMI Equivalent for Linux and MAC
Hey Guys,
I am sorry if this questions is coming as a repeat but I did try finding it here with no help. I wanted to ask if you guys know what would be the best WMI Equivalent for Linux and MAC. This is in reference to any RMM that wants to build equally strong RMM agents for Win, MAC and Linux.

Whatever happened to Spatry (Spatry's Cup of Linux)?
The recovered alcoholic and passionate Linux user that ultimately convinced me to switch to Kubuntu Linux from Windows 8 at the time has not made any videos in over 10 months. Now, he is under no obligation to continue his videos. That said, I have said to him in person that I appreciate his hard work and effort.

What more can you say to someone who has influenced your computing life such as helping you consider switching to Linux? Also, someone speculated that Spatry may have schizophrenia or bipolar. Do not know if that is true. Any comments or closure on that?

Best resource to understand ext4?
I have some free time and one thing I'd like to do is understand as completely as possible how modern filesystems work. I'm looking for a resoruce to explain how ext4 works from top to bottom, with no prior filesystem knowledge. I do have CS knowledge though, so I already know popular data structures, algorithms and complexity considerations.

Battery life on a Laptop
I've been trying to stick with linux as I have fallen in love with it. But the battery life is troubling me a lot. Even after trying power top and tlp separately (and together), the most I get is 4 Hrs. Using windows I manage to get around 7-8 Hrs on similar usage. It is just me doing something wrong or there is an inherent issue in linux?
PS: I've tried various distros and still the same result.

Kin: run other distros without a VM (using docker)
Hello!
I have built a program that uses docker to create and run containers, I was inspired by the windows subsystem for Linux, because there is nothing on Linux like it! the project is still in early stages but gets the concept across. Since the project is so young the only two distros that have been implemented are Arch Linux and Ubuntu, but I would like to keep expanding them!

Linux virtual machine running macOS?
Idk if i used the right flair but hey yall, im kinda new to pretty much all things pc (first build was completed about 4 months ago) — i have VERY GENERAL knowledge about computers, but im also smart enough to figure out most of what i want/need to do using google. Ive seen a lot of mixed information online about this though and i was wondering if someone could clear it up for me!
I use windows 10 x64 right now. Before i built this pc i did all my work on a macbook pro. Windows is great but i personally am more comfortable with the look and basic software that macOS offers + logic pro x. As we know, you cant run macOS on a windows pc without building a hackintosh that probably wont work after the next mac software update. Ive seen people say that linux can run a fully functioning VM of macOS. Is there truth to this? Anyone able to explain how or link me a video? Lots of conflicting info has me confused

What do the cputime numbers in /proc/stat actually represent? It's definitely not the number of jiffies.
I am new to kernel programming. I want to collect some cpu stats after every 100
_jiffies_ (for my college research). So I do the following in
[kernel/time/timekeeping.c](https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/kernel/time/timekeeping.c#L2194):
```c
void do_timer(unsigned long ticks)
{
if (jiffies_64 % 100 == 0) {
collect_some_cpu_stats();
}
jiffies_64 += ticks;
calc_global_load(ticks);
}
```
I found that every time `collect_some_cpu_stats()` is called, the total
[`cpustat`](https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/include/linux/kernel_stat.h#L35)
will have been incremented by more than 400,000 per core. (I don't remember the exact number of zeroes.)
So, clearly `cpustat` is not incremented once per jiffy. If so, how are they
incremented?

Legality of emulating a DE
Hello r/linux,
I had this question for quite some time.
If someone decided to create a user interface that is used by other OSes, will they be sued for copyright infringement?
For e.g. if I decided to create a user interface by following Material Design Language or Metro Design Language, will I be sued by Google or MS?

Linux Experiences/Rants or Education/Certifications thread - March 30, 2020
Welcome to r/linux rants and experiences! This megathread is also to hear opinions from anyone just starting out with Linux or those that have used Linux (GNU or otherwise) for a long time.
Let us know what's annoying you, whats making you happy, or something that you want to get out to r/linux but didn't make the cut into a full post of it's own.
For those looking for certifications please use this megathread to ask about how to get certified whether it's for the business world or for your own satisfaction. Be sure to check out r/linuxadmin for more discussion in the SysAdmin world!
_Please keep questions in r/linuxquestions, r/linux4noobs, or the Wednesday automod thread._

I do not play much game. But sometimes.
My setup was bumblebee. `optirun(primusrun` + `primus_vk(when playing via wine)` is working well mostly. But it's performance is not good as native run on Windows.
Once, I tried `nvidia-xrun` with steam. It's performance was good. Same with Windows. But it is clunky and inconvenient.
So today I tried new one.

$ prime-run steam
I've tried 3 games. Steam, Proton-5.0.5
- Factorio : It has native linux support. Pretty fun and very well made stable game. 1800+ hour played. this game is fine with Intel Kabylake G630 if not super megabase. so dont really need nvidia gpu. but it was some trouble with `primusrun`. lower fps than Intel. But now it's working pretty good. All grphics options turned on, loaded my most big saved game. Yes, constant 60fps. Good
- Factory Town : It worked with `primus-vk` previously but lower fps than native Windows run. Now same with Windows. Smooth. Good.
- Banished : was same situation with factory town. Now very good.
- ioquake3 : It's not steam game. Pretty constant max fps on 4k(3840x2160). Good
