Video Capture Device Recommendation

Looking for an external video capture device with USB3.0 1080/60fps that works with Linux. Primarily using it as experiment to use DSLR as a webcam. Would like to stay below $200 as this is just for fun and my first foray into this area. Will most likely using OBS software on the Linux machine to connect. Other than that, I'm not sure what I don't know at this moment. Any advice or recommendations appreciated.

Easy TUI app to monitor hardware specs

Hi guys, I've developed a simple TUI program in python to monitor pc specs and, most important, it's open source on github.

Check it out: [https://github.com/MarkGhi/HwDef](https://github.com/MarkGhi/HwDef) and tell me what you think about

How to move ahead ?

Hey linuxers,

I have been using linux for almost three years now. Even though I tried a few distros I stuck to ubuntu (don't know why :p). I really love it but I am still not a pro user. I have to google commands all the time. More than that I feel very guilty that I still don't understand many things about the os to detail. I want to be able to understand every command that I copy. By this I mean to know how exactly is it implemented. Moreover I am looking to get to the proficiency where I will be able to implement almost anything.
Can someone tell me the fastest way I could achieve this ?
PS: I am not a computer science major.

Desktop Environment Wars!

I had an idea

I was watching Setup Wars (TechSource) and thought about doing the same thing but only with custom DEs. And instead of it being in a video it’s Reddit based. However the submission couldn’t just be vanilla KDE, it had to be customized.

So here’s how it works;

You submit your DE to r/DEWars

I will choose four submissions, and will have them in a poll. Users will vote for the winner and after a while whichever one has the most votes, wins!

Note: In a submissions post, please have a comment saying your OS, DE, etc

Linux podcasts?

Trying to find a good Linux podcast to listen to while driving to work or just relaxing at the house.

Anyone know of some good ones about Linux news or even how-to’s maybe?

Honestly if they are talking about relevant topics in the Linux community I am down to listen to it haha.

A quick guide to remotely control your PCs using Veyron

I came across this video and thought it was a pretty cool introduction to an interesting piece of software.

It gave me new ideas on how to use my computer as well.

As an aside, we should do this more often, share really useful, polished, but "obscure" pieces of software.

If anyone has a better alternative to suggest taht does the same thing, I'd be open to exploring that as well.

Someone in the comments suggests using Jitsi as a presentation mode: so have users watch your desktop (but unable to interact) as you guide them through a tutorial or something.

Edit: whoops forgot to post link. And thats a typo, the softwares called Veyon

I'm Greg Kroah-Hartman, Linux kernel developer, AMA again!

To refresh everyone's memory, I did this 5 years ago [here]
and lots of those answers there are still the same today, so try to ask new
ones this time around.

To get the basics out of the way,
[this post](http://kroah.com/log/blog/2019/08/14/patch-workflow-with-mutt-2019/) describes
my normal workflow that I use day to day as a Linux kernel maintainer and
reviewer of way too many patches.

Along with mutt and vim and git, software tools I use every day are Chrome and
Thunderbird (for some email accounts that mutt doesn't work well for) and the
excellent [vgrep](https://github.com/vrothberg/vgrep) for code searching.

For hardware I still rely on Filco 10-key-less keyboards for everyday use,
along with a new Logitech bluetooth trackball finally replacing my decades-old
wired one. My main machine is a few years old Dell XPS 13 laptop, attached
when at home to an external monitor with a thunderbolt hub and I rely on a big,
beefy build server in "the cloud" for testing stable kernel patch submissions.

For a distro I use Arch on my laptop and for some tiny cloud instances I run
and manage for some minor tasks. My build server runs Fedora and I have help
maintaining that at times as I am a horrible sysadmin. For a desktop
environment I use Gnome, and here's a picture of my [normal desktop]
(https://i.imgur.com/g412C1E.png) while working on reviewing and modifying kernel
code.

With that out of the way, ask me your Linux kernel development questions or anything else!
