I'm Greg Kroah-Hartman, Linux kernel developer, AMA again!
To refresh everyone's memory, I did this 5 years ago [here]
and lots of those answers there are still the same today, so try to ask new
ones this time around.
To get the basics out of the way,
[this post](http://kroah.com/log/blog/2019/08/14/patch-workflow-with-mutt-2019/) describes
my normal workflow that I use day to day as a Linux kernel maintainer and
reviewer of way too many patches.
Along with mutt and vim and git, software tools I use every day are Chrome and
Thunderbird (for some email accounts that mutt doesn't work well for) and the
excellent [vgrep](https://github.com/vrothberg/vgrep) for code searching.
For hardware I still rely on Filco 10-key-less keyboards for everyday use,
along with a new Logitech bluetooth trackball finally replacing my decades-old
wired one. My main machine is a few years old Dell XPS 13 laptop, attached
when at home to an external monitor with a thunderbolt hub and I rely on a big,
beefy build server in "the cloud" for testing stable kernel patch submissions.
For a distro I use Arch on my laptop and for some tiny cloud instances I run
and manage for some minor tasks. My build server runs Fedora and I have help
maintaining that at times as I am a horrible sysadmin. For a desktop
environment I use Gnome, and here's a picture of my [normal desktop]
(https://i.imgur.com/g412C1E.png) while working on reviewing and modifying kernel
code.
With that out of the way, ask me your Linux kernel development questions or anything else!

PSA: Beware scams on r/pinephone
This is not a brigading request or witch-hunt. Just would rather users be safe than sorry.
A lot of people want pinephones, but they are in limited supply. The moderator over at r/pinephone has advocated reselling and buying within that sub.
However, there are no safeguards in place, no best practices, no reputation checks. Such an environment is ripe for scamming. Scams happen in even heavily moderated subs like r/hardwareswap and r/mechmarket even with such safeguards in place. For instance, users selling the same item to multiple buyers via less safe transaction methods and then never shipping, only to make new accounts and do it all over again.
The moderator also advertises a deceptively named telegram group that is non-official, which is fine, but could be used nefariously against unsuspecting users, potentially. They also advise NOT buying from the official store and instead advocate buying from resellers.
Full disclosure, I was banned from the sub for bringing this up, with the post I made deleted. This may make me look like I'm salty, but can be interpreted as a nefarious act.
Even if the moderator is as pure as the driven snow, it is still not safe to make any transactions in that sub. I recommend r/hardwareswap for such transactions, with crossposting to r/pinephone if you really wish to do so. You will be able to see seller reputation, along with recent timestamped photos, and advice on proper transaction methods.
I'd love to be wrong, but even if I am, it is still safer to use other subs for reselling/buying pinephones.

Arm Frame Buffer Compression (AFBC) support for Rockchip, coming soon to mainline Linux
Since late 2018, the Mali-DP display drivers, malidp and komeda, have had the ability to use AFBC, and now support for Rockchip (RK3399) is also on its way. While the initial work was done by Rockchip in 2014, it unfortunately wasn't upstreamed. Efforts to provide AFBC support for Rockchip in mainline have recently concluded and the feature is available in drm-misc-next tree.

My new laptop don't have drivers for APU and GPU but it's AMD, so...I just wait?
Hello there the beautiful community. First of all I wanna thank you all for giving us the chance to get rid of Windows :) I've bought myself a new laptop MSI Alpha 15.
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 - 3750H + Vega10 integrated graphics.
GPU: AMD RX5500m 4gig.
There're no drivers for VEGA10/APU or GPU on AMD website but as far as I know the AMD is pretty open to open source community and has lots of hardware fully comparable with Linux, so...I have yo just wait? Also would that be a good idea to stay with ubuntu/pop\_so over Manjaro, since my hardware isn't supported yet, should I focus of drivers only or the riling release for new kernel with support? Thanks for the answer in advance!

Found a great article regarding fractional scaling on X.org
[https://ricostacruz.com/til/fractional-scaling-on-xorg-linux](https://ricostacruz.com/til/fractional-scaling-on-xorg-linux)
Instead of scaling up, the writer implies first scaling up on an integer base and scaling down from there. This makes more sense, as it might prevent blurriness in some scenarios.

NCSA Linux Certifications?
So I have been looking at some Linux certifications and ran across [this](https://www.ncsacademy.com/certification/linux_ubuntu.cfm) one, NCSA Ubuntu. I have never heard of this one, but was wondering if anyone here had experience with NCSA certs. Thoughts?
