IDEs on Linux?

Hey, so I'm a programmer like I'm sure a lot of Linux users are. I've been interested in Linux pretty much my entire life, and recently made the switch to Linux (yay)! On Windows, I used visual studio for programming, which isn't available on Linux. I mostly code in Java, C++, Python, and do some Web Development stuff. I just wanted to know what IDE, or groups of IDEs, I could use for these languages. I've heard of Visual Studio Code, and I like it, but I want to know what other options there are. Thank you guys for your time <3.

Where to find a list of open source "service" companies? If you know any companies, I'd love to know!

Hey friends!

I'm trying to learn more about the open source "services" market. I think that it is going to grow significantly in the coming decade.

**Does anyone know any open source "services" companies?**

**Is there any publicly available list?**

**Does anyone know the best way to identify open source "services" companies?**

What does an open source "services" company do? They offer services around open source software like [RedHat](https://www.redhat.com/en) does for support and [Quansight](https://www.quansight.com/) does for consulting, support and customization. A non-exhaustive list of services may include:

* support (bug fixes, customization, 24/7 help etc),
training
* customization (new features added to open source projects)
* hiring/placement (high demand open source contributors)
* managed services
* migration services
* mentorship

I'd love to discuss this with y'all!

Thanks for your help in advance.

I have created C++ application - download manager

Hello,

I have created lightweight multi platform download manager(zdownloader) which supports GoogleDrive, ZippyShare and MegaUp hosts.

Features:

* Can download multiple files at a time
* Supports segmented downloading
* It can resume interrupted downloads
* Can check multiple links at a time
* It can reconnect after specific time if download speed is too low
* It can unpack archive files after download. Supports: rar, 7z and zip
* Supports network proxies
* Allows you to download google drive files even if the daily limit of download has exceeded using google drive REST API v3.

There are few advantages over for ex. jDownloader (at least for me):

* I needed reconnect option after every X minutes if download speed drops below Y Mb/s
* It allows you to download google drive files even if the daily limit of download has been exceeded using google drive REST API v3
* My application does not pauses ZippyShare downloads for 15 minutes as jDownloader sometimes does
* it's lightweight console application

root user permissions

Is there a way to restrict the root user from using certain programs eg: vi , vim to edit a file. I know we can restrict normal users but is there a way to restrict the main root user from doing so without disabling the "root user"

OS Concept: UbuntuRPG

An OS design that slowly unlocks features as you progress/use it. While it seems like a game on the surface, it's actually a quest-packed OS that teaches people about the OS, how it works, and more advanced features than would otherwise be used by an average user. It presents learning an OS as a fun and easy way for new users, or power users that just want to have some fun.

First steps into a new world. Started a Linux course on EdX. Found an old laptop with a forgotten password and chucked Ubuntu onto it. I am completely new to understanding the tech world and feel a little overwhelmed.

I've been using my USB as a portable /home for about a year by now.

I used to have the problem of switching between PC's and Laptop's whilst changing my setup/rice almost daily.

Now I just mount an USB stick to my home directory on every device.
I mainly use my computer for development, so I'm OK with gaming on a separate dedicated user.

I also do frequent backups that just rsync the content of the USB to the local computer.
This automatically gives me the advantage of distributed backups.

With USB 3.0 there are no noticeable performance differences.
Though keep in mind that I don't have the biggest home directory, its about 2G.

To implement this setup I've just added the following to the fstab of every install and gave the USB the label SHARED_HOME.
```
LABEL=SHARED_HOME /home/user/ ext4 rw,relatime,nofail 0 2
```

Can you download and use Ubuntu touch on any unlocked tablet and/or phone?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this kind of question. I'm also sorry for asking stupid questions in advance. I've been really wanting to get more private security on a phone, tablet, and laptop for a while now.

I read the list of phones as well tablets that can get Ubuntu touch installed on their website. However, I was wondering if it would be possible to download the installer on any unlocked device. The website https://devices.ubuntu-touch.io/ shows a bunch of different phones and tablets on the list that can be used to download the installer. Does this mean that you can only download the Ubuntu touch on those devices only or that those devices work best with the software? Please let me know what you guys think.
