Beginner Question Concerning Flavors

Hi all!

I have probably a beginner question, but here it is - if I switch from Ubuntu to Kubuntu fully (not just install KDE Plasma), could I expect to be able to run all the software I am now running on Ubuntu?

I had the idea that flavors of the same distro were just about the aesthetics, but then again, when I installed Xfce I was struggling to get touchpad tap to work. So that got me a bit cautious because on my Ubuntu install I managed to set up almost everything with relative ease and now it's not the best time to experiment, but to improve my workflow.

I installed just KDE Plasma yesterday and it worked much faster and used less resources on my Lenovo laptop so that's the main reason why I want to switch, to improve workflow.

Any insight would be appreciated!

Oh, and btw, if you were wondering about the essential software I'm referring to, it's mostly:

I am very disappointed with Windows

I have been a Windows user for years. I use it daily at home, at work and I never had troubles with it.

However, I feel like the path it has taken lately does not really resonates my needs. I tried Linux a handful of times in the past but I always got back to the comfort of Windows. I could really get a work done in Linux and *I did* sometimes but the learning curve was still a little steep for me.

The whole OS as a service thing of Windows 10 made me insist on developing some skills on Linux and be able to use it more seamlessly in my daily routine, to be more familiar with Linux.

I still have to use Windows cause I need some electronics engineering CAD tools that doesn't run on Linux. And I also don't see the reason to wipe it completely out of my SSD. It doesn't bother me anyways. But the fact that it's eating my whole system's resources it's astonishing. I have 13 tabs on firefox opened while I'm typing this post and the RAM is below 4GB (from the 8GB I have) on Manjaro. On Windows that would be over 6.5GB.

I mean, why do I have to buy more RAM to run the same tasks I was running a week ago? I don't play videogames... My laptop can't really work with Windows anymore. And it was working fine a year ago. And now all of a sudden it can't. The OS is too heavy.

It makes me wonder, where does this thing go?

Linux - Transcendent Delight

I'm here to share my absolute delight and elation regarding Linux in particular and OSS in general. Although I have been using Linux at home for over a decade now, I have never felt as elated and happy about its functioning and performance as recently.

1. I have a relatively beefy rig, and started using KVM - VFIO passthrough solutions a few months back, to pass-through my Nvidia GPU to setup a new Windows VM. I run Manjaro KDE on the host. I got into this setup, as I wanted to start playing some games on Windows and setup some gaming for my kid. I didn't want to dual boot because that's so last decade. Had to learn about VFIO, QEMU and stuff like that a bit, but the Linux kernel with its build in KVM is an absolute fantastic piece of software. The optimizations that can be put in to achieve near identical performance on a VM close to bare metal is phenomenal. After some iterations of which configuration to use for my Windows VM, I finally settled on something I'm really happy about. I also use this VM to game stream all my games to any computer or TV in the house or play VR. During all this reconfiguration and reinstall of the VM's, the host Manjaro OS (could be any other distro) has been rock solid, amazing and performing like a champ. Getting a keyboard-mouse sharing tool like Barrier to work between host and VM is an icing on the cake and a sublime experience.
2. All other machines at home(excluding work laptops), including desktops and laptops at home for other family run Linux. My Media server, VPN server, adblocking server, file sharing servers all run Linux. My entire computing platform right now is Linux.

I wish to do many more projects to improve my quality of life in the future. But as someone who likes to get geeky interacting with computers and computing in general, Linux has been a game changer and offers unrivaled potential. Thanks to various communities around Linux and OSS around the interwebs that have helped umpteen of us in the past and would support us in the future.

P.S. Although I do play a few games on Linux using Steam and Proton, I haven't explored Linux's gaming potential fully yet. Something to do in the near future :)

first time using linux today :)

and I loved it! I kept on breaking my head over how to get discord installed, I had the .deb but was trying to run the setup, after an hour a friend told me it's already installed and there's no setup ur anything ts just 1 click and it's installed and I'm like WHAT THIS IS SO EASY

not yet ready to completely switch to Linux yet as I have files to back up and want to get some more experience first, but I absolutely love it!

ZFS Guide

Hey,

I have a server with 16GB of ram, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, i5 6400. I want to use it as Plex server where everything is stored on GDrive.
I want to have the SSD as cache for the HDD, speed is important. I wanted to use an Linux alternative to primocache but basically found myself in a maze. I found bcache and ZFS as the main options but couldn't find how to install ZFS as ssd cache etc.

I'm quite the Linux noob and don't have much experience with storage.

Getting Into Linux

I'm planning on getting a new computer within the next 2 months or so and plan to get Linux because I've heard it is very very secure and has lots of options compared to other operating systems. Is there anything I should know that would maybe turn me off of the OS before I get it? I'm no computer genius but I know quite a lot about technology and how computers work so I'd assume setup (coupled with Youtube tutorials and friends who have experience) wouldn't be an issue.

tl;dr even though it wasn't long

I wanna get Linux on my new PC, should I know anything first that would make me not want to do this?

Global hotkeys to control mute/unmute state of Zoom for Xorg

Using this app a lot in these COVID-19 times, and since I have a mechanical keyboard, for the sake of others I'm usually muted. But I often forget that and speak up, only to recall later that I have to switch to the Zoom window and hit unmute :/

So I wrote this tiny noscript, bundle it with a global hotkey you can set using xbindkeys and voila! You can mute/unmute Zoom regardless of your current window.

I thought it will be useful for others, since my friends and colleagues suffer from the same problem...

When will systemd-homed come to a distro near you?

Hey guys any idea when systemd-homed will be implemented into distros? Perhaps Ubuntu 20.10?

I think the way in which our home folders will now be encrypted on suspend rather than a full hibernation and portable home directories are a ludicrously genius solution.

I am not technical to implement it on my own, so I'd like to have it as an out-of-a-box support.

Your Opinion - What if Linux and GNU Switched To CC0

Creative Commons 0 (CC0) is a license that essentially releases to the work into public domain in countries where the concept of public domain exists and gives a public-domain-like permissive license in countries where there is no public domain or rights can't be waived.

I am a strong believer in the idea of CC0 over GPL because I think we as a society should be able to benefit off of each other's work without restriction. Bare in mind, I am also heavily against profiteering off of such work and am aware of the pitfalls in what would be redistribution for a fee or in other words, preying on ignorance.

I am trying to see what the general Linux community thinks regarding CC0, its benefits, its cons, and whether they think it would be an overall gain to society if GNU, Linux, and more were to switch to this model of release. What would be the long term effects, how would society improve or fall apart as a result of this cataclysmic shift? haha

In my opinion CC0 code is "true" open source if there was such thing.

Webdav and FBX files?

So I just set up my workstation, all configured, so time to work, right?

Wrong.

For some reason I can't read fbx off of my davfs2 mounted NAS. Every other file type (including .zip with copies of all those FBX files) is working perfectly fine. JPGs, PNGs, you mention it. All good. But not FBX for some reason. Of course I tried googling it (DDG, but still), but no results.

That of course blocks my work, cause if I can't copy/read/import FBXs, I'm unable to perform.

Anyone had similar problems? Maybe solution?
