Problems in Linux not related to popularity?

I've come to realize that many of the problems GNU+Linux faces are at least partly due to its relative lack of popularity in consumer OSes. For example, they say that they use Windows because they like to game or Mac because it requires little technical skill. People poke fun at GNU+Linux because at times one must compile a piece of software from source. Another argument is that drivers are sometimes not as available/reliable on GNU+Linux as Windows.

These things generally hark back to Linux's popularity. Software developers don't want to bother to develop for Linux if not many people will use it. Hardware manufacturers may not find it in their interest to release drivers for Linux for the same reasons.

So I guess my question is this: what are some problems with GNU+Linux that are not necessarily related to its relative lack of popularity in the consumer realm?

Software/Driver Licensing Question

If I'm a software company that wants to distribute a closed-source driver, what would be the correct license to get the driver producer to agree to? No exchange of money here, we just need to make sure the license allows us to distribute their driver (which unfortunately is closed-source but it's all we have to work with).

Any got a BLFS 9.1 ISO I could dd to a partition/drive?

Hey all! So I know this sort of goes against the point of LFS, but does anyone have an ISO of Beyond Linux From Scratch (BLFS) ready to go to install Xorg etc ? I'm lazy and I'd rather not do the whole process myself (most kidding). Or at least a set of noscripts that would automate the whole process... Intel RST and GNU+Linux

Hello,

I have only recently joined the community, but have been using Linux for a number of years at this point.

I read this old [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/53ri0m/warning_microsoft_signature_pc_program_now/), and it struck me that Lenovo seemed to be the bad guys. Funnily, I just bought a new Dell Inspiron, and the same issue has arisen in Dell, despite posts depicting the contrary.

While Dell seem to support Linux (particularly Canonical's Ubuntu), that support is only based around the availability of AHCI in the SATA options in the BIOS.

Now that has disappear. The new XPS lineup seems to have continued support for Ubuntu but I do not have one so I can not comment on how it is achieved (I assume AHCI).

Is this an industry trend? Why is this support just being taken away? How does it benefit anyone?
