Live Photos support?

I am planning to sync my apple photos library to my Linux desktop, I am backing up/syncing my photos with Nextcloud and it supports apple’s Live photos format.

My question: is there any photos management/edit software in Linux distros that supports apple’s live photos format?

FOSS and Linux 2020 accomplishments and major events.

2020 was a crazy year, but I wanted to see what everyone thinks about Linux and FOSS in general in 2020.

Overall I have the perception that not a lot of major stuff happened, which is great news. Everything iteratively improved, but was pretty stable all around.

One call out I'd make is that the AMD launches this year were solid. Normally there is an unstable period between hardware release and when it's running well, but the RX 6000 series gpus and ryzen 5000 series cpus were pretty much without issue from everything I read (it'd be nice to actually get my hands on a new GPU at msrp ..... ).

What do you all think about the last year?

Your Top 100% O/S Editor/IDE Suggestion

Requesting recommendations of 100% (from code repository all the way to distribution) open source editors and/or IDEs for most if not all one's web development needs, and importantly, WHY you use it over any other open source options.

In a nutshell, this stems from me beginning to see just how important open source is now as well as how important it is to preserve and expand it into the future. I'd like to do my work on tools that I could potentially directly contribute to in the future and at least give feedback to now, among many other reasons.

To be clear, I'm not looking for a philosophical, what is or isn't open source, debate, or any debate at all.

But to clarify for the sake of accurate recommendations to this specific topic:

I am personally not satisfied with the "open source" nature of many projects purporting to be open source, and I find myself not being excited for how advanced any of these IDEs may become because of their amazing proprietary telemetry among other things.

So, that is where I'm coming from and what I'm looking for so please school me (and whoever may also find this useful) on any and all completely open source options for editors and/or IDEs as well as any crucial peripheral tools (e.g. there are some extensions that essentially MAKE VSCode useful and even ideal for certain types of development).

I haven't found a thread exactly like this in my search so hoping it could be useful.

Thank you ahead of time to anyone that shares.

Budget software recommendations?

Right now I use Mint on my phone, but I find that it doesn't have the reports I want, so I'm looking for a better solution, and where better to look than FOSS? I've tried Skrooge and Homebank, but they seem to need you to add every transaction/operation manually, whereas Mint automatically syncs the transactions of all linked accounts. Does anyone have a recommendation for software that also can automatically sync transaction history with the accounts you link?

"Viewing source code isn’t tied to elevation of risk"

I know this won't change anything. Microsoft will still be Microsoft. Windows will still stay closed source. Embrace, extend, extinguish?

Anyway, it's funny to see Microsoft admitting this after being hacked.

So I installed Arch Linux

Yes, I made it, and I'm fucking proud of it. I always heard that Arch Linux was so hard to install because it was fully manual, but I actually didn't find it that complicated... I mean, with this wonderful invention that is the Wiki, it was really easy and I understood every command I typed in this black and scary terminal. It's certain that if you just copy/paste the commands without giving a fuck, it won't work (and even...).

The hardest thing I had to go through was the partitionning, but I just had to read a mid-long article about it and I could make it in less than 5 minutes (thanks cfdisk btw, you are well better than fdisk...).

I didn't even get errors at all, the only little one was caused by efibootmgr that for any reason wouldn't work (I don't remember the error's message), and the solution was just to add --removable to the grub-install command, solution that I of course found on the Wiki.

I also had a problem with grub, but that's just because I'm dumb: When I booted my computer it just printed the grub shell without doing anything else, and I realized myself that it was because I forgot to config grub with the grub-mkconfig command.

Anyway, if you can read (hand if you have a very little bit of motivation), you can install Arch Linux.

Microsoft Teams in Google Chrome freezes entire computer

My Pop_OS! machine has been constantly freezing during work when using Microsoft Teams. I have been using it in Google Chrome instead of installing natively. It always freezes during calls, usually with just audio and no video.

I'm a bit surprised about this since I don't think any Linux machine I've used has ever frozen in the past, but it's very common with Teams. I'm also surprised since I wouldn't think running it as a website would be able to do anything so awful as freeze my entire OS.

Has anyone encountered this before? I'm kind of at a loss of what to do.

Minimal CLI file manager

Hi Reddit! It seems the market for CLI file managers is *very saturated* and I’m having decision paralysis. For example, it seems these are all popular

* ranger [https://github.com/ranger/ranger](https://github.com/ranger/ranger)
* nnn [https://github.com/jarun/nnn](https://github.com/jarun/nnn)
* fff [https://github.com/dylanaraps/fff](https://github.com/dylanaraps/fff)
* lf [https://github.com/gokcehan/lf](https://github.com/gokcehan/lf)
* vimf [https://github.com/vifm/vifm](https://github.com/vifm/vifm)
* broot [https://dystroy.org/broot/](https://dystroy.org/broot/)
* midnight commander [https://github.com/MidnightCommander/mc](https://github.com/MidnightCommander/mc)

All I want is to have the core feature set of cd’ing into deep directories, searching for a file within a dir, previewing text files. Opening files with the right program is optional as I figure I can just cd there and run the command I want.

Besides that, minimalism would be great. I don’t want to have a on of other features that I won’t use packaged in with the software. It'd be nice to not have to toggle a bunch of settings. Also the fewer dependencies the better.

Which one fits the denoscription or at least which ones can I cross off from the list.

Vircadia is celebrating the new year in-world

Hello!

Vircadia is an Open Source 3D/VR shared space with native Linux support. I've introduced it in an earlier post you can check out for more details.

We've been working hard on fixing bugs and improving the functionality throughout this year, and are going to throw a party to celebrate the new year in-world. The party will feature DJ Chica Musica and is scheduled for 23:00 UTC 31th December until 03:00 UTC 1th January, right after one of our regular developer meetings (which everyone is also welcome to attend). The event is listed on our calendar, which automatically takes care of timezone conversions.

You'll need to install the client to attend. If you have any trouble, we'll be answering questions here and at our usual Discord server. An invite can be found at our home page.

Run windows apps on linux

We have SO MANY time trying to run Win32 apps on GNU/Linux, and there are so many projects like Crossover, Wine, or React (i know, it is not linux but anyway), etc.. but; Is not easiest try to run MacOS apps? GNU/Linux is an UNIX-Like operating system, and MacOS is an Unix system with "pedigree", should work eassier run MacOS apps on GNU/Linux, or at least on BSD than run Win32 apps...

Joint display issue with Epic and Lutris!

I have recently come across this issue where Borderlands 2 (and other games) launched from the Epic Games Launcher (launched through Lutris) repeatedly launches on my laptop display. FYI, I have a 17" Eurocom connected to an external 35" display. Whenever I launch a game from Epic, it switches off the external display (irrespective of whether it is set as the primary/secondary display), and launches the game on the laptop display, and on top of that with a weird resolution! Even turning off the laptop display, and setting the whole thing on a single display (external) does not help, as the external display is switched off, and the game(s) launch on the laptop display.

On the other hand, Steam, and even Battle.Net works just fine, with no glitches whatsoever. What's got me confounded is that Epic used to work just fine in the past. Any hints or suggestions is highly appreciated!

Cheers, Tux-folks!

Multiple Keyboard Shortcuts in Manjaro

I have been using Pop_OS! the past few months and I have used this really nice feature where multiple keyboard shortcuts can point to the same thing. Is there any solution to implement the same in Linux Manjaro?

Why I Would Never Choose Linux Over Windows for Desktop Use

TLDR: For the average person, use Windows for desktop (with WSL if you love Linux) to save yourself some headaches.

Yes I know this is r/linux and I'm talking shit about Linux but I figured I would get more perspective here than anywhere else. Feel free to prove me wrong, I'm somewhat new to the Linux world as well.

Linux server is fantastic. I have a home server running on Ubuntu LTS 20.04 on an old laptop 24/7 for the past two months and it's perfect. Shitty dual core? No problem. It still runs smooth as butter. Can't say the same for Windows 10. I also vastly prefer bash and zsh to whatever Windows comes up with. Moreover APT is a godsend.

My GCP instances also run on Debian 10 without any issues.

Linux desktop is another story. Here's a list of what I deem to be necessary for a desktop operating system.

###### Absolutely necessary

- Minimal bugs, even with relatively obscure third-party software - Windows wins as most pieces of software are developed for it)
- No driver issues - Windows wins as most pieces of hardware are made for it
- Smooth desktop environment that feels "premium". (i.e. no visual glitches and clipping out of the box) - Windows wins
- Intuitive UI and settings placement - Both are equally shit

###### Nice to haves

- Free (as in freedom) and open source - Linux wins
- Very low CPU and RAM idle usage. (I have a good PC with 32 gb of RAM so this doesn't matter that much) - Linux wins
- No restart necessary for updates - Linux wins
- Customizability - Linux wins
- Free (as in money) - Tie, you can get legit Windows license for $10
- Gaming - Windows wins

Needless to say, while Linux fulfills more "nice to haves", Windows wins or ties in every single point of "absolutely necessary". Here are a few anecdotes to back my point.

- jblas works perfectly in intellij on Windows. On Linux there was firstly a libgfortran dependency issue which was resolved quickly, so nevermind. But then there was a temp file permissions issue present on Fedora but not Debian that had no easy fix. Point is I shouldn't have to find fixes to problems that shouldn't exist in the first place. I just want to get my assignment done.
- Firefox has a text scaling issue that happens exclusively on Linux. I have a 1440p monitor so I increase the scaling factor in about:config but the font size is still tiny (UI elements are fine).
- The button to change between clicking once to open a file and clicking twice is confusingly placed under mouse settings. I would have thought that something exclusive to file management should be under Dolphin or Nautilus. This one is entirely personal opinion because I don't know what is intuitive for anybody else.
- Trackpad does not work due to lack of drivers on my Legion 5 laptop. There is no fix as of now.
- Remember when I said good things about my server? Well, it functions well as a server but the audio driver is completely screwed and does not work despite hours of debugging. This is when I already had over a hundred hours of experience in Linux so it isn't some newbie mistake. Then again this is minor as I'm using that machine as a server.
- KDE just feels unpolished compared to Windows when you compare the fine details. For instance, when you turn off animations and drag the window to the edge of the screen, there is a very choppy animation of the region getting outlined. Turning off animations in Windows has no such issues.
- Multi-monitor sometimes gets weird. In Windows when you drag a window to the edge of one screen, your cursor gets stopped if there isn't enough speed on it. In KDE you have to precisely maneuver it to a thin region of a few pixels on the edge of one screen and hold it there without going to the next.

I've sunk many hours into setting up various Linux distros for fun and it's one of the most educational and rewarding experiences I've ever had, but I can't use Linux as a daily driver.

I use WSL on a daily basis because I'm more used to linux commands. I find this to be a nice compromise.

I love open
source software and I try my best to use them, and even contribute to some projects myself, but I use an operating system to first and foremost get shit done, not to protest against big bad corporations.

A wild idea: Single kernel image on Raspberry Pi cluster

My idea is simple : run 8x Raspberry Pi, but the 1st Raspberry Pi will "see" the other Raspberrys as CPU NUMA nodes, like a multi processor Xeon. Is this possible? Physical connection is Gigabit Ethernet.

What kind of Linux patches are needed? Is this even possible?

Help choosing the right distro

Hello everyone!

Sorry in advance if I am not using the right terms or other stuff(I am very new using linux).

My father owns a turbocrap 2 in 1 laptop/tablet (a Lenovo MIIX 320-10ICR) with Windows 10, 27 Gb of ROM, 2 Gb of RAM and an intel Atom, which I warned many times not to buy.

Useless to say he bought it anyway and after a pair of years of questionable work it became kinda useless by any means.

It's some time now I am searching without results for a Linux distro both working with this specific model without compromising its tablet/laptop feature and being very stable (he's using it for his job mainly for power point presentations, pdf reading and to register his customers through an online website).

I would appreciate if anyone here could come up with a solution or even just a suggestion about what should I do.
Thanks a lot in advance; if you need images or other specs ask me and I will gladly answer.
