A wild idea: Single kernel image on Raspberry Pi cluster

My idea is simple : run 8x Raspberry Pi, but the 1st Raspberry Pi will "see" the other Raspberrys as CPU NUMA nodes, like a multi processor Xeon. Is this possible? Physical connection is Gigabit Ethernet.

What kind of Linux patches are needed? Is this even possible?

Help choosing the right distro

Hello everyone!

Sorry in advance if I am not using the right terms or other stuff(I am very new using linux).

My father owns a turbocrap 2 in 1 laptop/tablet (a Lenovo MIIX 320-10ICR) with Windows 10, 27 Gb of ROM, 2 Gb of RAM and an intel Atom, which I warned many times not to buy.

Useless to say he bought it anyway and after a pair of years of questionable work it became kinda useless by any means.

It's some time now I am searching without results for a Linux distro both working with this specific model without compromising its tablet/laptop feature and being very stable (he's using it for his job mainly for power point presentations, pdf reading and to register his customers through an online website).

I would appreciate if anyone here could come up with a solution or even just a suggestion about what should I do.
Thanks a lot in advance; if you need images or other specs ask me and I will gladly answer.

Default Root

Hi all, I hope you are well, I’m new to this community so if this post is not allowed please delete,

I wanted to get back into Linux, and my go to distro was Backtrack/Kali, I recently re-downloaded it and saw that it is Non-Root, which kind of annoyed me because being root by default allows you too take short cuts even though you are putting the system at risk, i was wondering if there are any Linux distros out there with root at default instead of creating a standard user, I’ve seen little work arounds to gain root but it’s not the same as before. I really liked the default root that Kali. I’ve also seen people with the same problem coming from the Oldskool gen of Kali.

Many thanks for your help in advance.

My first time answering a question!

As a beginner in GNU/Linux command line and Python, it felt nice to post my first ever answer on a community like stack overflow compared to being the one asking a question.
I even got my first upvote!

Linux on a Nexus 5X (bullhead) phone

Hello,

Does anyone know know of any Linux distro that works on a Nexus 5X?

I've searched quite a lot but I wasn't able to find one, except for Plasma Mobile which I did manage to successfully install (after making quite a few fixes in the installation noscript) but I found out that support for the bullhead was discontinued and the repos for it were not available anymore.

I don't have any kind of use for this phone anymore but I would very much like to bring some life into it and make it interesting and fun again (so that rules out Android).

Gdu - fast disk usage analyzer

Hello,
I would like to introduce you a new project, which I have started last year.

It's called Gdu - Disk Usage Analyzer written in Go - https://github.com/dundee/gdu

Why to start a new project when there is ncdu, du...etc? Well I really like the user interface of ncdu, but I thought that maybe it could be a bit faster and more portable. So I tried to implement some basic funcionality of ncdu in Go, which I thought could be very good match for this type of project. And it looks like it works well - see the benchmarks!

Anyway, since I am quite new to running open-source project and developing in Go, I will be very glad for any feedback. Thanks!

Running Linux faster , misc. issues, and game dev stuff

I dual boot Fedora on my computer (Dell G7 15). I quite like Fedora but there are some issues I'm running into that I'd like help with.

1) I can't install the newest version of Fedora, I keep getting a message saying Linux can't be updated. Might this be because of low disk space where Linux is installed?

2) Fedora is installed on my HDD and so it's quite slow to start up. Usually after that it's fine, but if I'm running a few things at a time it can get a bit laggy.

My SSD is 256GB and Windows and a couple of programs are on there.

I want Fedora to run faster. Should I save up for a new hard drive and a higher spec computer, delete some of my files and move Fedora to Windows, or just keep it on the HDD? There's a way to have programs install on the HDD and have Fedora's main files on the SDD, correct?

3) I'm willing to put effort into getting programs to work, but sometimes I spend an hour or two looking up how to get stuff like Lutris and Unity to actually work, trying different things, and nothing works. Should I be looking on different places when I research? Could someone help me with a couple of things that might be more "basic"?

tl:dr; I'd like help with more basic/intermediate Linux stuff, in addition to tips on gettig Fedora to run faster, and I'm looking for help or where to go to for help.

Read HDD temperature without interrupting spindown timeout

I want to record my harddisk temperature as long as it is in operation, but I don't want the spindown timeout to be interrupted (the harddisk should automatically go into 'standby' after 30 minutes) I have already tried it with smartctl but it interrupts the timeout and hddtemp supposedly does not recognize any temperature sensors does anyone know any other programs with which I can read the temperature?

Linux Time

Downloading my first Linux operating system (Ubuntu) on a Japanese computer. I know my keyboard is already not going to match up... A learning adventure begins. Any favorite tools I should add to this new computer? I would like to learn coding with this machine if I can figure out how to use it.

Linux Newbie

Hi All, I’m an old bloke who has been messing around with computers for years. I have an old laptop that has a stuffed battery but is still in reasonable condition which I have installed Ubuntu on. Is this the right forum to seek answers and assistance with learning the OS and to get help with anything that doesn’t work the way I expect it to? So far from what I’ve seen it awesome, I don’t know why the world doesn’t run Ubuntu.

Different CPU Times: Linux operating systems ‘top’

CPU consumption in Linux operating systems is studied using eight different metrics: User CPU time, System CPU time, nice CPU time, Idle CPU time, Waiting CPU time, Hardware Interrupt CPU time, Software Interrupt CPU time, Stolen CPU time. Let’s review each of the CPU time in this article. https://dzone.com/articles/different-cpu-times-unixlinux-top

Steam Hardware Survey for December 2020

First off i would like to say happy new year that I hope you guys are as crazy as I am about the long awaited sequel to 2020, 2020-II:Electric Boogaloo.

If you happen to be greek i hope you won this year's Vasilopita :)

Now let's get on with the survey:

Link: [https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam)

Interesting things happened in the OS and Language space, It seems like the chinese Steam client launched because people who use the language of Simplified Chinese are up, and now it seems people in china have taken the top spot.

|Simplified Chinese|47.18%|\+30.22%|
|:-|:-|:-|
|English|25.63%|\-16.23%|

With that we got a crazy user increase on Windows... **7 ?!**

|Windows 10 64 bit|69.40%|\-19.88%|
|:-|:-|:-|
|Windows 7 64 bit|26.74%|\+22.35%|

Of course that means that linux percentage got down considerably.

|Linux|0.57%|\-0.33%|
|:-|:-|:-|
|Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS 64 bit|0.14%|\-0.07%|
|"Arch Linux" 64 bit|0.06%|\-0.04%|
|"Manjaro Linux" 64 bit|0.06%|\-0.04%|

Does that mean that over all less people are playing on linux? Probably not, however it is interesting to see the affect china has had on the store. Maybe there isn't a Chinese client available for Deepin Linux or linux users of china in general.

Steam does not seem to provide the raw numbers and instead provides just percentages.

**More in depth linux stuff**

Link: [https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam?platform=linux](https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam?platform=linux)

* There are more Arch users using Steam than Manjaro users using Steam
* Most popular distro for steam users is \*drum roll\* "other" with 53.23% using it.
* AMD is slowly overtaking Intel though honestly that is global.
* 1920x1080p is still on top and will stay on top ~~even though 1920x1200p and 16:10 is frankly better.~~
* Radeon RX480 is on top but going down. I cant see what is on the second entry because it seems to be broken.
* Networking speed and Microphones seem to be broken(Globally). And Valve should fix that.
* Users of Simplified Chinese are at 0.82%. So either chinese users do not use linux, OR there is no readily available chinese client.

Trying to port Ubuntu Touch

I'm planning to port Ubuntu Touch to a device not already ported by UB ports. As this is my first adventure into trying such porting, I want to know what minimum system configuration I could use to comfortably do this.

I have a laptop with 16GM ram, 1TB HDD, i5 processor. When I checked the documentation it just said more ram and faster processor are better. Can any one throw some light on it ?

Looking for a time scheduling / task management program, geared more towards Home & Personal life rather than solely work-oriented. I feel like there's gotta be something decent out there, but I just can't find it.

So I'm in the early stages of getting over an addiction, and to help myself stay clean, I want to follow the classic suggestion of planning each day in a super detailed manner, to keep practically every minute minute accounted for. Idle hands are the devils plaything and all, y'know. So I'm looking for a program that'll let me nicely schedule out my entire day with everything from chores to grooming/skincare routine to exercise and hobbies, making music, programming projects (whether just for fun, or whenever I get a job again [hopefully soon\] ), school (I'm talking online classes towards a data science masters), etc. I've found a couple of neat programs with a lot of features, but they all seem VERY focused on ONLY Work stuff, not home/personal stuff. Am I SOL and gonna have to do it in windows or old fashioned in a journal with pen and ink? I'd appreciate anyone heading me in the right direction, I suppose if one doesn't exist, that could potentially just be another possible project and item to put on my resume in the future.
