Google meet on Linux low performance.

I've full on switched from Windows too Linux before the winter break started. Previously I've been using a multi boot laptop with multiple distro's on it and windows. I've decided to not use windows anymore on my laptop, as I recently ordered a desktop which I intend of having windows and other distro's on, but the delivery is facing trouble and is set to arrive in two weeks. Leaving this laptop as my main device, so I have to use it for school and online classes. My school district heavily relies on "Google Meet" rather than "Zoom", I don't know why but I think it is due to privacy concerns and the Gsuite of application. But when using this on Regolith Linux (a i3 windows manager for Ubuntu) I notice how bad it is when it comes to performance on Linux. I'm running a quad core i7-2670QM and NVIDIA Geforece GT 525M, 8gb of ddr3 and the performance is pegged at an average of 90% CPU usage and 60% RAM. I only have one tab open that runs Google Meet in firefox, this type of performance is really bad specially considering that it is on a TWM that tends to be lightweight compared to a DE. I've tried to try running "Google Meet" on diffrent types of browser such as; Chrome (Snap, Flatpak, Offical Repo, etc...) , Brave (Snap), Firefox (Offical Repo) but nothing seems to work to get it to preform well. Is there anything I can do to make it better performing as it is necessary for me? Specially considering its almost the end of the semester and culminating + exams are coming up, so teachers are teaching faster and more important stuff.

Linux Alternative to the take ownership noscript?

There's a noscript you can install into the right click for Windows called take ownership, basically if I plug an external drive in and have issues copying data off of it, I can simply click this and let the magic happen.


I'm wondering if such an option exists for Linux? I've never been privy to some of the permissions/ownership commands.

Multiple Master Template Pages for Website using Sublime Text on Linux distro. Is this possible?

I really didn't want to post this here for the whole world to see, but apparently some people want to be snotty so here it is. There is no point in that behavior, just don't respond to me at all unless you really want to help. (Oh yeah, thanks for the help...smh).

I am trying to build a website using Multiple Master Pages using Linux and Sublime Text. I figured out how to do it in windows> what this video is here: https://youtu.be/4U\_NxWVV4hU if you want a visual of what I was doing. I lost the project when I switched over to Zorin OS, and want to start over.

I'm pretty new to code in general and will have to refresh on the HTML5 and CSS I've learned so far. But this website is where I want to take all of my notes as a reference for later on. Basically w3schools (which I know gets some shit) has way too many pages to open to be productive for learning and reference, and I want to do my own version.

I'm not trying to push my really awkward video- it's just an example of what I'm trying to do. Thanks for the help, and please be kind.

Easy to use Remote filesystem noscript mounting tool

Hi guys, some months ago, I wrote a small bash noscript to simplify the use of sshfs and fuse, in the process of mounting in my ubuntu local machine remote file systems.

I call it kmountssh and after installing it (also I wrote a sh installer noscript for ubuntu 18.04) you can just type and run something like:

$ kmountssh -h="[host\]" -u="[remote user\]"

And it will do the necessary to mount the remote filesystem.

Also, to display a detailed list of available options params you can always use:

$ kmountssh --help

The noscript, and the installer for ubuntu18.04 (it should also work in ubuntu19.x and beyond, provably also in Debian > 9.x) its available at:

Grub Windows 10 time keeps resetting to Greenwich time

Hello, I use Windows 10, and Ubuntu 20.14.1. LTS, Grub used for choosing OS while booting.

I have been experiencing occasional resetting of Windows time to GMT-0.

Why is this happening, and how do I set up to make sure the local time is kept for Windows 10?

Experimenting with colour managed applications, the case of Eye of Gnome and Shotwell

TLDR:

1. Shotwell is apparently not colour managed, and yet, it displays the pictures in aRGB and sRGB differently. To my knowledge, this information is stored in the embedded ICC profile, no?
2. Eye of gnome clearly reads the embedded profile, in both jpg and png. How is that it displays both sRGB and aRGB images the same way? Does that mean that a colour managed application is able to convert any input profile to the system profile, using both the embedded profile (indicating what the original colour space is) and the system profile to render it properly?

Long version:

I have a question regarding color management and colour spaces (sRGB and AdobeRGB) and how Eye of Gnome (eog) & Shotwell deal with them.

I recently (re)dived into the topic and after exporting a picture I edited with Darktable in sRGB & aRGB, I decided to compare eog and shotwell to have an idea on how it would look on a different computer. *Note that I have a wide gamut monitor, calibrated and profiled using benQ palette master element and displaycal.*

Here are my results:

**PART I**

Observations:

* sRGB (centre pic) look more saturated than the others because I took this screenshot on a wide gamut monitor with the relevant profile.
* both pictures on the left look the same with eye of gnome, despite one being saved in sRGB and the other in aRGB
* shotwell displays the pictures differently. Conclusion: shotwell knows the difference between sRGB and aRGB. It means, it must be reading the embedded icc profile, right? (more on that later)

**PART II**

Same as above, only difference is the central picture is now displayed using the system profile.

Observations:

* The picture in the centre looks like those displayed on the left, ie by eye of gnome, right? Conclusion, eog can now use the system profile to render a picture.
* Note, that I also did this test with Geeqie, and I get eog results if I enable colour management in the menu VIEW > COLOUR MANAGEMENT

Using a different distro each year

I don’t know if someone has done this before but:

What would be the benefit of changing ones main machine Linux distro per year?

Say I for the next 5 years, I use a different Linux (or Unix idk) distro for a year. Then report back what certain aspects of using the distro were beneficial or different from other distro, or couldn’t do but could do in other distros...

Like Ubuntu would be the easiest and most supported distro for many things

Versus using fedora or Linux mint and seeing if those will run docker or kubernets

I just thought if someone wanted to bathe in the Linux pool and take a dive in each one to see what kind of rides or slides that each distro gives the user.

New in Linux - question about RAM usage

I use Pop OS, switched from Win. I mostly do simultaneous tasks in Blender 3D, Davinci Resolve and Vmware Workstation Player. I noticed that RAM usage is great.

But what is the difference between Cache and Swap? This I don't understand based on Cache is used and when Swap is used.

Moving to Linux (maybe), Proton Compatibility and Programing from Linux.

Long story short, i've used Ubuntu about... 11 years ago and i liked it. But windows kept me hostage because i just like games so much.

I'm upgrading some pc parts this week, and i'm going to format my pc, i'm deciding if i'll keep using Windows 10 or if i'll move to Linux.

Question1:

I'm starting a college course to learn programming in a couple of weeks. If i code something on Linux will it be difficult to run on Windows 10?

Question2:
The vast majority of my games are on Steam or Itch.io and i've heard about Proton, and how it can make a lot of games run on Linux without an issue. Is there any way to check on steam which of my games will be able to run on proton? I'm fine if a couple of my 556 games won't work atm. But if MOST of my games won't run that'll be a problem.

Search within Zathura PDF

Over the past couple days, I've been working on building a new, more personalized note-taking setup using vim similar to the method explained in this video:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh\_WGWii7UE&t

Halfway through the video, nixcasts (aka connormcd) shows they're making use of a Linux-based pdf viewer called Zathura. So far, I've read a little about how Zathura's nice as a PDF viewer if you're interested in navigating through pdf docs using Vim key-bindings. While that's really cool, I'd also like to find out how well Zathura supports searches through PDF text.

Can any existing users of Zathura comment on how well / how fast Zathura can search through pdfs? As a Mac user, I'm basically only familiar using Adobe DC reader for working with pdfs where search is... depressingly slow. Though I recognize searching pdf text is something that may be more of a problem inherent to working in the pdf standard rather than more easily indexed plaintext. In short, since search is a pretty important feature for my needs, I just want to know if programs like Zathura, etc. are any faster at executing search.

Also, as a Mac user, I realize there would be certain major obstacles to getting started with a program like Okular, so that's not really an option I can easily entertain. Plus I'd like to be able to actually start working on and thinking about my notes, not messing around with KDE installations and then working through an abstract, personalized Vim configuration. My time is unfortunately pretty limited.

Why would you choose Linux over Windows or MacOS

I've uses Linux because of the challenge of it and because I like working with minimalistic graphical interfaces. I recently had an argument with a mate who insits on MacOS and I wondered what other arguments beside that it's open source are in the favour of Linux.

I know there are some security and data policy related issues and it also uses less ressources than for example windows. Maybe you guys know some ,,hard" facts why to choose Linux over Windows or MacOS.
