Why is there no Linux advertisement?
I'm pretty sure that the biggest reason why the Linux marketshare is so low,is cause no one advertises that.
I mean before I started using Linux,I thought that it's for hackers,and the funny thing is that I only looked it up,cause I wanted to search for "the os that hackers use" and then I found out that the de's look better than windows and hackers only use it,cause it's better,but it's not only for hackers,but for everyone.
And that problem probably comes from that there is no advertisement that shows how good Linux is.
I mean I never saw any advertisement of Linux in my whole life,I even saw that crappy brave add more lol.
And it would definitely make the marketshare bigger,I mean look at chromeOS,it came out some years ago but it got bigger than Linux marketshare,cause of the adds,if there were no chromebook adds it would be smaller.
So why is that so?
I mean there is the benefit that Linux gets bigger and stomps windows and then we have won.
I mean why do bussinesses that sell Linux related products not make adds for it? (Or why are there so little adds that I don't even see them?)

Advice on teaching a new Linux user
I have a colleague who wants to learn about Linux and I’ve been showing her stuff. She has to have Windows at work because of engineering software. So, I set her up with WSL and she apparently ran with it because she installed Ubuntu on her personal laptop. She really likes Linux so far and is playing with terminal commands.
What are some good next learning steps after that? I get the sense, “Do vimtutor” would be discouraging.

Anyone know of a small library to preview/quick-view 3D model files, supporting .stl?
I'm trying to find a way to quickly preview all the STL files on my machine. Similar to gnome sushi (pressing spacebar to preview an image)...
Closest I found is g3dviewer, but it doesn't seem to support STL, oddly. Not sure why, it's a pretty common format for 3d these days, especially for people doing CAD/3d-printing, but maybe that's why... the project seems old... considering breaking open the code to add stl support, but thought I'd ask first.

having hell of a time install a particular version of wireshark
Hey everyone,
I work for a company that required a specific version of wireshark to be installed on the system, we inherited a system that has the most up to date version.
I can remove that version using apt-get uninstall wirehshark
however, how do I manually install wireshark version 2.6.10
I have the tar, and from what I can read online you run ./configure
however there is no configure in the wirehsark directory after it upacks.
what gives?

Learning Linux
So within the past couple weeks I have been thinking of switching to Linux but I literally have no idea on where to start. I enjoy using Windows but I have been wanting to get more technical with things as I dont think I will ever get anywhere in the career I want to if I dont push myself to learn.
Hoping someone can help me on where to start with Linux and if dual booting is still a good idea in 2021??

Windows if falling in a way I've never seen before
First of all I use 2 operating systems rn, Linux and Windows, I used to use 3 but I decided I need a break from MacOS and it was a bad decision.
I bought a machine for 1.2K$ 2 years ago moving from my MBP. I felt good and started poking around with Windows to personalize it a little. After 2 years my computer starts to feel outdated. Windows updates constantly are breaking things, search bar is an utter nightmare, when I try to search for a file it never does a good job, when I try to search for a program in my computer that I installed 2 seconds ago it says I don't have it.
Windows store provides zero to none apps that you can actually use and enjoy.
I have constants problems from juggling between two settings menus, one from 2010 and the newer one from Windows 10. They never bundled it together.
Windows feels like a bloatware compared to Linux or MacOS. It feels like an old truck driven by a drunk into a steep hill of darkness. I honestly hate it and looking how it was surpassed by competition it makes me sick. I am making a Linux hopping party with a friend soon and I don't want to look back, ever.
Literally nothing except gaming works well in this enviroment. Everything feels old, clunky and shitty on a machine that should be still flying. I have no viruses, I never bloated the machine with anything and it gets eaten out by a 2013 MBP.
In 2 weeks tops I am out of Windows for life.
I am happy to see a community like that existing because it gives me courage to ditch something that I was so sure I will be using my whole life.

exeCute now runs transparently exe and bat files on Linux

Using bare wine and dosbox usually gives problems when launching a mixture of Windows and MS-Dos applications.
Launching a Dos program on Wine sometimes fails, as Wine performs all kinds of custom configurations intended to use Dos programs in particular cases.
So a while ago I created exeCute for being able to tell the difference among the two types, and launching the exe directly into the right emulator. With the parameters that will look closer to a native experience.
But still running Dos programs was difficult if they required a disk image, as that needed making a custom noscript for each game under this category.
Today I have fixed that. If you launch such program, exeCute will look for disk images in the same folder and mount them on D. If there are none, the exe folder will be used as D instead for maximum compatibility.
In summary, now launching exes on Linux only requires clicking on the desired exe.

I am a Windows user and I am tired of it's battery and resource consumption on my laptop even when I'm doing something as simple as writing down notes in Word. That's why I am compiling a list of the lightest Linux distros so I can test the boot time, memory usage, CPU usage, and software load times to find a fast and efficient Linux OS for my laptop when I'm at school so I can have an easier load on my battery when I'm out all day at classes. I will report my findings here once testing is completed.
So far for testing I have:
Linux Lite 5.2
Puppy 9.5
Debian 9
Peppermint 10

Tell me your favorite lightweight distro to be included in my testing! (I've really never used Linux... like... ever so this will be interesting to test out)

Problems with the ping command
As the noscript indicates I'm having a few problems with the ping command on my computer. I'm using Pop!\_OS. When I ping a machine (my Pi in this case) which is on my local network, I only use it to check when it is back online after a reboot. So when the pi goes offline, I should see the following output
```
PING 192.168.1.108 (192.168.1.104) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.149 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.143 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.161 ms
From 192.168.1.103 icmp_seq=4 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.103 icmp_seq=5 Destination Host Unreachable
From 192.168.1.103 icmp_seq=6 Destination Host Unreachable
```
But instead of looking at "Destination Host Unreachable" after the 3rd icmp_seq, it will "pause" the output and will resume after the host is back online. So this is what I see in reality.
```
PING 192.168.1.104 (192.168.1.104) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.135 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.142 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.143 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=20 ttl=64 time=0.140 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=21 ttl=64 time=0.141 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=22 ttl=64 time=0.153 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=23 ttl=64 time=0.206 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=25 ttl=64 time=0.264 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=26 ttl=64 time=0.243 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=27 ttl=64 time=0.154 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=30 ttl=64 time=0.146 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.104: icmp_seq=31 ttl=64 time=0.148 ms
```
And as you can see, it skipped the output after 3rd icmp_seq and resumes the output normally with the 20th icmp_seq. And notice another abnormality between 27th and 30th. I'm running wired with my Linksys gigabit router and my NIC is an Intel I211 (rev 03). The aforementioned abnormality of that weird pause between the 27th and the 30th icmp_seq is more apparent when I ping google i.e. over the internet where the ping is much higher than 30 ms.
To check if my router was at fault, I tried doing the same thing - ping my pi and ping a google server. I did that over WiFi from my MacBook Pro and everything worked as expected, there were no weird issues as I mentioned above. I also tried hooking the MacBook with a wired adapter on the same port of the router where my computer was previously connected - to check if that particular port on my router was faulty, but I didn't face any problems on that specific port as well.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? I'm unsure if this is a distro specific problem as Intel NICs are pretty reliable and work well with Linux and I would assume neither the NIC nor router are at fault here.
Considering I can't see when there is a "Destination host unreachable" and the ping sequence resumes without any `icmp_seq=29 destination host unreachable`; All I normally see is "Huh, there's no problems with my internet connection. Everything is fine. I'll just press control C (`^C`) and quit out of ping. *then I see the packet loss* Wait, I didn't see any errors in the output, how did I get packet loss more than 0%?"
I don't know what is causing this. Any help will be awesome. TIA!
Edit: I'm using the `terminator` terminal emulator and I checked if it was a terminal emulator problem by doing the same thing in Pop's default `gnome-terminal` but I got the same result. This the first linux distro I've used on this computer and hence, I'm unsure if this is a Pop!_OS specific problem. Running `ping -V` shows `ping from iputils s20190709`.

AMD or nVidia low-end gpu for server ?
Hey I need to buy a lowend GPU for my machine (running debian) - it runs headless most of the time (but the board wont boot without GPU). Currently I am using very old PCI-E1 gpu and I am suspecting it might be source of crashes.
So I am looking to buy a new GPU. I've read that AMD has currently amazing opensource drivers. So is buying AMD here better than nVidia ? Currently looking at either Geforce 710 or Radeon 230.
