Good and bad distros for beginners/regular users?

I get interested in what linux can offer me, and I'm gonna try to enter this world...so, what can you recommend me as a starter in this environment? Good distros, difficult distros, friendly distros, bad distros. Anything you can tell me would be nice. I'm an architect and maybe it is not that wise to change from windows to linux, but I'll give it a try.

I've been watching a lot of videos, readings webs, and looking for a good-looking distro, and there are a few that caught my attention, but I'm a little overwhelmed about what people say about some distros. Are Mint, Manjaro, KDE Neon, Deepin (I like a lot how this last one looks) good distros to begin with? Should I avoid any of these or other ones?

And last but not least, thanks if you stop to help me, I appreciate that

Zoom on Linux

I recently got my Pop OS drive running again. I would love to use it for work but Zoom for Linux is missing two features I need for work. I needed the ability to monitor more than 4 screens when sharing my screen and I need to be able to turn in 49 person mode.

Is it worth emulating Zoom for Windows with Wine or Proton to get those features? Any tips for doing so? Or do I have to stick with my Windows machine?

Run a Windows VM on a Linux VPS and access GUI via remote

Anyone setup a Windows VM on a Linux dedicated VPS. I have a Ubuntu 20.04 VPS running on online.net with ssh access. I'd like to remote desktop into a Windows desktop environment running in the cloud.

Is it as simple as setting up a qemu image running windows, setup its remote desktop connect and to automatically log in upon startup, then upload the image to my VPS? I'm keen to run a Theta Edge Node with my idle CPU grunt...

More governor for Linux

I was trying to save battery on laptop the other day and I tried tools like auto-cpu freq and yablo from their github repo but I want happy with how these battery saving tools work and trying to find more tools to save battery that's wen stumbled upon this page on github

http://ajgupta.github.io/android/2015/01/28/CPU-and-GPU-governors/

It list all the governors that are available for android using custom kernels and few of these governors looks really good to save battery like smartappV2 governor so why are they not available in Linux by default. Or is there is way to add this to the Linux kernel

What was your tipping point and how has it gone so far?

Well I will start with I have no word of a lie swapped between various Linux distros and windows so many times this month I'm now getting frustrated and cannot decide which to choose. I run an Nvidia based Asus laptop and for the most part I've had the best success with Pop Os getting all the Asus fan controls, fn keys and so forth working. I'm for the most part a gamer obviously where Windows wins, but I have a large collection that runs reasonably well of Linux, I enjoy a tinker and making it my own.

I don't want to dual boot, so really keen to hear how everyone made the switch, their thoughts and limitations or even an urge to use windows.

The current state of bluetooth headsets on Linux?

Over the past few months there has been a lot of movement on Gitlab to get bluetooth headsets working on Linux. That movement had also been accompanied by a lot of drama, but it seems that things have quieted down. Now that progress is being made, does anyone know what to expect? Will we see airpods working on Linux out of the box any time soon?

Samsung Odyssey G9 5120 by 1440p @ 240hz

Hi, I'm new to this community moving from Windows. I've been getting more into development lately and I'm really liking the terminal from Linux.

So, I am an avid gamer, and I know Linux OS isn't a great platform for gaming. I'm doing a GPU passthrough to Windows 10 Guest to achieve "best of both worlds" and it's been working really nicely.

Now, I'm operating at half the advertised refresh rate of what my monitor can do: 120hz. Every time I switch it to 240hz, I see huge glitches like lines and then my monitor turns off and on. 240hz works on Windows no problem. Also note that at lower resolutions, 240hz does work!

My current rig is:

Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G9

GPU 1 (primary): AMD RX 6900 XT

GPU 2 (for passthrough to Win10 guest): RTX 2080 Super

CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x

Note: I have tried with only one graphics card, same results.

Linux distros tried: OpenSUSE, Manjaro, Pop OS (couldn't even select 240hz on Pop OS)

Desktop Environments tried: KDE, GNOME

Thank you for reading, and looking forward to your ideas!

First Linux Minecraft Server Problems

So I'm new to using Linux, I'm mainly just using it for school. So to challenge myself I've tried setting up a Minecraft server for my friends and I to play on during quarantine. However the problem is that I can join the server using the servers local ip but my friends can't join using my public ip like on windows. I port forwarded already and yet they still cant join. If anyone has any potential solutions that would be great!

also im using ubuntu server 20.04 LTS

A kind of a stupid qestion

I'm getting more and more intrigued with linux, most of the games on steam are playable (native or proton/wine), even teams is available on linux from what i heard, so my question is: Is it worth switching from windows? I really like that linux is open source, it's interface is great in my opinion and my final straw that made me really want to switch to linux is teams being supported (online school)

so Is it worth it?

Why does no file systems support ECCs? Some, like Btrfs and ZFS have checksums — why not add support for ECCs as well?

Storage mediums aren’t always reliable, and a bit could occasionally get flipped here and there.

With file systems like Btrfs and ZFS (among others), we at least know when there’s data corruption.

Why not go a step further, and add ECCs so that when we do detect data corruption, the system has an opportunity to try to fix it?
