Samsung Odyssey G9 5120 by 1440p @ 240hz

Hi, I'm new to this community moving from Windows. I've been getting more into development lately and I'm really liking the terminal from Linux.

So, I am an avid gamer, and I know Linux OS isn't a great platform for gaming. I'm doing a GPU passthrough to Windows 10 Guest to achieve "best of both worlds" and it's been working really nicely.

Now, I'm operating at half the advertised refresh rate of what my monitor can do: 120hz. Every time I switch it to 240hz, I see huge glitches like lines and then my monitor turns off and on. 240hz works on Windows no problem. Also note that at lower resolutions, 240hz does work!

My current rig is:

Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G9

GPU 1 (primary): AMD RX 6900 XT

GPU 2 (for passthrough to Win10 guest): RTX 2080 Super

CPU: Ryzen 9 3900x

Note: I have tried with only one graphics card, same results.

Linux distros tried: OpenSUSE, Manjaro, Pop OS (couldn't even select 240hz on Pop OS)

Desktop Environments tried: KDE, GNOME

Thank you for reading, and looking forward to your ideas!

First Linux Minecraft Server Problems

So I'm new to using Linux, I'm mainly just using it for school. So to challenge myself I've tried setting up a Minecraft server for my friends and I to play on during quarantine. However the problem is that I can join the server using the servers local ip but my friends can't join using my public ip like on windows. I port forwarded already and yet they still cant join. If anyone has any potential solutions that would be great!

also im using ubuntu server 20.04 LTS

A kind of a stupid qestion

I'm getting more and more intrigued with linux, most of the games on steam are playable (native or proton/wine), even teams is available on linux from what i heard, so my question is: Is it worth switching from windows? I really like that linux is open source, it's interface is great in my opinion and my final straw that made me really want to switch to linux is teams being supported (online school)

so Is it worth it?

Why does no file systems support ECCs? Some, like Btrfs and ZFS have checksums — why not add support for ECCs as well?

Storage mediums aren’t always reliable, and a bit could occasionally get flipped here and there.

With file systems like Btrfs and ZFS (among others), we at least know when there’s data corruption.

Why not go a step further, and add ECCs so that when we do detect data corruption, the system has an opportunity to try to fix it?

Is there any type of low power state like with the ps4 package

I’d say one of the best features ever created for the PS4 is its suspend state. Auto Downloading files silently etc.

I wish the pc had a similiar thing so I’m not always updating

Is there any type of package that can achieve something similiar

What kind of projects will you not use Linux or is Linux not recommended for?

I have been using Linux for development, day to day use, embedded, server etc. I kinda think about Linux in every project i venture into. I wonder sometimes how people do similar projects without use of Linux at all. Maybe are there scenarios that Linux is not suitable for?

Why aren’t there more Fedora / RPM derivatives?

There’s obviously a lot of Debian derivatives and arch derivatives - but why aren’t there more Fedora / RPM derivatives? I guess there’s Fedora and Suse but surprised that there aren’t more. Fedora seems a better base for distros than Debian... or god forbid, Ubuntu. What’s the reason?

Smartest way to refresh and update knowledge

Hi all,
Actually it is almost too uncomfortable for me to open this thread but after a long time of thinking I believe that you as a community can surely help me.
About 10 years ago I was working in Linuxadministration before I changed my focus to Microsoft systems about 7 years ago.
In the future I have been given the opportunity to primarily administer Linux servers again, which I am already looking forward to.
Unfortunately for me, I have to realize that I have lost almost all of my knowledge over the years. Even the things I still know are surely outdated over the years.
I now ask myself how I can refresh my knowledge in the smartest way.
Of course I could read a book and build up a lab. But where do I start and where do I stop, what do I do so that it also brings a result?
Do you know any practical tutorials that could help me at this point? Positive I find with programming languages for example are so-called "koans". Is there something like that for the Linux OS?

Cheers
Wozniak

People who use OpenRc instead of systemd, is it worth it?

I've been thinking of switching to Alpine Linux for some time now, but I am sort of nervous about leaving systemd, (I'm on arch atm), does it cause an unreasonable amount of headaches? Do the positives outweigh the negatives?
