Best Distro for just watching DVDs

Bit random but I've nowhere else to ask

Got some baseline experience with Linux, need a Distro that's less than 1.8GB and is just able to play DVDs via a USB CD/DVD Drive. That's all. Literally nothing else is required. If I have to install VLC or something to be able to play discs then so be it. My dad just wants to be able to watch Star Trek on his ancient laptop and I, loving son that I am, would like to help him

Speech to text?

For accessibility reasons, I need speech to text (free and for long periods of time). WebSpeech API isn't working with my browser (Firefox). Talon only supports English.

I tried streaming the audio output to my Android device, but LiveTranscribe won't recognize that stream as input (it expects mic input).

Currently my lifehack is to hold the Android phone with LiveTranscribe on next to the speakers, but that requires speakers to be on and quite loudly at that (and I want to stop inconveniencing roommates)

Playing with PAM autologin

I'm trying to perform console login using the cryptsetup passphrase as password.

* I'm using systemd cryptsetup to unlock my drive, this create a user cryptsetup entry in the kernel keyring, I can effectively see it in `/proc/keys`
* gdm can autologin by retrieving that password, but I try to make it work with console login
* I modified agetty to not prompt for the username with `--skip-login -o '-p -- <user>'`
* from what I can see in gdm's code, pam_gdm.so is doing the keyring lookup, so I added it in `/etc/pam.d/login`

result: automatic username is working, but it is still asking for the password, while user cryptsetup is effectively there, `sudo cat /proc/keys` after login confirms it. What am I doing wrong? anyone else has tried this before?

hello there, im just curious if you have had ever any app that couldnt be run on WINE ( games excluded!) and you were literally forced to use windows (7) in vmware? im asking this both as a general question and also to gauge whether i should un install vmware, as i think its just sitting uselessly there.

Pretty Cool Day...

I've been wanting to try out linux for awhile. I posted here a while back asking for advice on what new laptop to buy. But, as things normally go, things happened and I was never able to really commit to making the purchase for a new linux laptop. After doing some cleaning around our basement, I found an older HP Pavilion Laptop I purchased about 7 years ago. I was getting ready to find a place to recycle it but found a YouTube video about how to convert a windows computer to a linux. In about 2 hours after doing more research, I have Debian running with Gnome Desktop Environment and it's awesome! I read that this isn't a good beginner distro but I feel like I'm pretty decent with computers and I have been managing just fine. Currently learning from a Udemy Course "Master the Linux Command Line in 11.5 hours". It has been fun so far. I have really enjoyed feeling more in control of the computer so far and just wanted to pass along the good vibes. I've been reading some of the community posts about other good resources to learn and I'm just really having a good time!

The Age Old Question - Which Distro

I really wanna FreeBSD, but since driver support sucks, linux it is.

Could you share your experiences using Arch on your Daily system? I'd like to try that router, but don't want to Admin my system all day.

Also, what's a decent Distro with ZFS, EXT3, low maintenance requirements aside from updating Repos? Maybe something without SystemD?

My goal is to daily a linux system that has almost not proprietary software. I'm cool with AMD or Nvidia drivers, and plan to install Windows in a VM, maybe install steam, and do some programming.

Kali on Pop!OS

So I started my Linux journey after installing TailsOS on a live USB. I liked it a lot. So I downloaded Kali Linux as a Virtual Machine on my Windows PC. I actually liked it since I found it challenging. But I think I would rather start my journey from Pop!OS.

Given that Pop!OS and Kali are both Debian-based, can all the programs that run on Kali run on Pop!OS?

How To Install GNOME 40 in Manjaro (and possibly Arch)

Let me start this off by saying I've never written a guide like this, but I'll try my best to make it easy to follow.

My reason for writing this guide is to help people like me who wanted to try out GNOME 40 but didn't feel like switching to a development build of GNOME OS or Fedora. I run Manjaro and wanted to try get it to work on there. I messed around with the Buildstream package, but never having heard of Buildstream in the first place I couldn't really make heads or tails of it. I couldn't figure out how to build the packages from source either, as there were missing dependencies I couldn't solve.

Back-up any important data. This might break your install or otherwise break your system. I tried this on a clean install of Manjaro. I downloaded the GNOME version, but I suppose that isn't necessary (in fact - it might be easier with other DE's but I don't really touch those so I wouldn't know).

Don't expect this to work flawlessly out of the box. The alpha currently released is heavily in-development and not yet ready for production use. It might crash, be unstable, or behave unexpectedly in other ways.

If you wish to proceed, here are my step-by-step instructions. A kind fellow by the name of Marcio uploaded a packager to the Arch User Repository called gnome-shell-40alfa. This caught my eye, and I set to work trying to install it. This is how I have managed to do it.

1. Update your system. Open a terminal and run sudo pacman -Syyu. Enter your password and let it run, you probably know the drill.
2. Install yay, which we will use to install the GNOME AUR package from a terminal. You can use Pamac and search for yay (it's in the official Manjaro repositories).
3. Next, before we proceed, we will have to remove the current gnome-shell, as well as a bunch of dependencies. To do this, press control + alt + F3. A black screen with a text prompt will ask you to log in. Log in using your account, then enter sudo pacman -Rcns gnome-shell manjaro-gnome-assets. It will show you what packages are going to be removed, confirm by pressing Y.
4. Once that's finished, we can start installing GNOME 40. Enter yay -S gnome-shell-40alfa. It will ask you whether you want to remove some dependencies, I wasn't sure so I chose not to by pressing N.
5. Now, it will start downloading and building a bunch of packages. It will ask you multiple times whether you want to keep or remove specific conflicting packages. I chose to keep the packages ending in -git, as they appear to be the newer versions that you want to install. The first conflict I got was jack and jack2. I chose to keep jack2 by pressing Y. Then I proceeded the installation by pressing Y again. After that, we need to replace gsettings-desktop-schemas with gsettings-desktop-schemas-git. Press Y to confirm, then proceed with the installation by pressing Y again. Follow these steps for glibweather by pressing Y again, twice.
6. Now, after the new version of Mutter has been built, press Y to remove the old Mutter install when prompted to do so, then press Y again to proceed with the installation.
7. After this, you should be finished. Type reboot to, unsurprisingly, reboot your machine. There currently is no login manager installed, so you will be dropped in a terminal. Log in, then enter gnome-shell --wayland and you should be dropped into the alpha release of GNOME. Congratulations :)

Windows has finally done it!!! I'm switching.

I swear I'm done I want to join you guys. So I'm wanting to switch from windows and I was planning on using something like KVM to play games that dont run well on linux. I have a few questions before I switch though.

1.what version of linux should I get? Pop,Ubuntu,Arch ( I'm kinda personally leaning towards the Arch side.)

2.What are the first things I should do when i first run the os? Any commands or anything?

3 would running windows in kvm affect vr performance too much I have a WMR Headset? Should I just dual boot?

4. Are there anythings that you miss about windows or think that most users or I will miss?

Linux is dogshit

Every Linux vegan is telling how much easier it is to use Linux instead of Windows so after installing Ubuntu to my unused laptop I opened firefox and youtube and it was giving me some kind of Mime error and i couldn't play a video. After 1 hour of searching for solution I had to install some restricted extras package....
Imagine if you are a complete noob at it how are you supposed to watch youtube videos???


After that i decided to install android emulator to play some games and guess what? Unlike Windows you can't just install Nox or Bluestack. I had to install something called Anbox and as you guessed it's not as simple as install and run. I had to run like 10 cmd commands one after another and after that it didn't work. I know you will say that i fucked up step 7 or some shit but why is it so tedious??


TLDR: Everything in Linux is time waster and a chore compared to Windows

I intend to port it to more distributions in the future with an AppImage... Does anyone know a good guide on how to create an AppImage for a Ruby application?

Cloud storage?

Long story short, I am sick of using OneDrive cuz of all the security issues. If anyone could recommend a cloud storage that is super secure I would be grateful. (Also, I've done a research on Nextcloud but I wasn't really comfortable setting it up cuz of all the server stuff)

python-sdbus - my new D-Bus library for Python

Unified client/server interface classes. Write interface class once.
D-Bus methods can have keyword and optional arguments.
