Recommend me DE or Window Manager
Hello, folks! I'm looking for new Desktop Environment or a Window manager, currently I'm using i3wm with polybar, however there are plenty of small bugs that bother me. When someone is calling me on slack/Skype I don't see the dialog box to answer unless I have the application opened on my screen, having dialog boxes from IDE's like Pycharm, IntelliJ and so on is pain in the ass. I'm a programmer / systems administrator and have tons of terminals open And IDE's, I don't want to spend time debugging my own machine. Most of the features from i3 that I use are: toggle full screen, having split screen, moving apps to different deaktop (page whatever is called), resizing windows, having specific apps to open to specific desktop also using single 4k monitor.

Linux+ Exam
Start off by saying good morning. I wanted to reach out to the all knowing Reddit for some assistance. I’ve been in IT for 16 years and I’ve I finished my IT degree. I will just be working on certs from now on. I’ll be taking my Linux+ Exam at the end of the month and wanted to check and see if anyone out here had a decent study guide to go off of of. Find IP on it's own
Hi. Is there anyone is this group that can help me.
I have next question:
I have a Ubuntu machine I want this machine to get an adress on the network. BUT if it is not in a DHCP network, that it tries to get an IP adress on its own.
For example by scanning its interface on the ip addresses that pass by and then try to find create one of its own and then find the gateway outside.
Does anyone have any idea how to create this with what tools?

Where should you install frameworks ?
So I'm currently installing a framework named kafka on my personal computer just for personal use. (Not in production)
And the question just hit me, where should I put this ? Usually I just put in in my personnal user folder add the bin path to the PATH global variable and that's it.
Honestly I find it weird, I don't want to have such folders in my personal folder, but I couldn't figure where I should put it ?
The most logical place would be the opt folder but I want to take a second guess and ask it here.

Polling CPU temperature for RAPL framework.
Hi. I got a Xeon 8260M cpu with a slightly insufficient cooler, that is, the cpu temperature slowly ramps up until it reaches >90C.The good thing is that it takes more than 10 minutes under full load to reach such temp.
If I power-cap it using the RAPL framework, taking off some \~20W from its TDP, the temperature gets quickly under control, at the expense of some 300-400 MHz.
So, here is what I want to do: I want to poll the cpu temperaure every (say) 10 seconds. If it's above some threshold, issue the appropriate RAPL command. As it gets under some other threshold, issue another RAPL command to make the CPU regain its full TDP.
My question is: how can I poll the temp from inside a shell noscript and/or python program?

Can't mount nfs resource in soft mode using /etc/fstab and systemd-mount: «soft» is unrecognized option. I can do this manually using terminal, but I'm not sure if «soft» option works in this case.

Zoom on Linux is TERRIBLE.
I use Zoom (as I suspect many people do).
Last I used Zoom in Novemeber/early December…
<rant>
1) Joining meetings doesn't work half the time (in my case, waiting rooms are enabled). If I try to join, I literally get stuck and I never join. Then I have to leave, rejoin, and hope that I can be let in properly. It usually works the second time, but maybe not.
2) Joining breakout rooms doesn't work. Instead of joining the breakout room, Zoom on Linux has a MUCH better feature: kicking you out of the meeting (while it looks like you're still joining that breakout room for others in there) :P
2a) Then, since the meetings I'm in are classes, if you try rejoining the meeting, you get to miss the entire class since the teacher is in a breakout room and can't see who's in the waiting room. Great design choice, Zoom!
2b) Oh, and if you manage to join a breakout room, Zoom will randomly decide to set your audio output volume to like 10%, so good look scrambling around wondering why your audio is randomly broken (hint: it's not Linux's fault).
3) Reactions literally don't exist. Hmm… so if someone does a reaction/your meeting is based around reactions, you won't be able to see it.
4) The styling is literally awful. Half the elements on my screen look poorly positioned and sometimes they overlap and the borders don't work.
Solution: install a Windows VM. Oh, and if you can't do that since you have a bad computer, you're screwed. Haha. The web version of Zoom doesn't work with microphones on Linux for some reason and even if you do get it to work, the latency is god-awful and your webcam will stream at a whopping 2fps.
So, because of 1) and 2) especially the first, STOP SAYING ZOOM WORKS ON LINUX. It is a awful buggy mess and barely can keep itself together.
Also, Zoom? Please STOP telling me that Zoom "works" on Linux and add a disclaimer or something to your website that you ship an unstable piece of garbage to your third-class Linux users.

Turning my screen off with a keyboard shortcut, or: Why GNU/Linux is easier and more user-friendly than Windows.
maybe the power button on your monitor is broken, it doesn't matter why: you want to turn the thing off without touching it (that includes yanking the cable out). you want to press a single button on your keyboard and have the screen turn off
most distros make this easy to setup through the GUI: just open the preinstalled keyboard applet, create a new shortcut, paste "xset dpms force off" or into the command box, and press the button you want to use. that's literally it. the moment you press the assigned button the screen goes into standby and wakes up under the same conditions as it does when you've set it to turn off automatically after X minutes of inactivity
you can even control individual monitors. i haven't tested this but "xset -display $DISPLAY dpms force off" or "xrandr --output $DISPLAY --off" should turn it off ("xrandr -q" to list your monitors) and "xset -display :0.0 dpms force on" or "xrandr --output CRT1 --auto" should turn it back on. in the xrandr command the "auto" can be replaced with "on" and you can add something like "--right-of $OTHERDISPLAY" to control its relative position
now i want to do the same thing in windows. here, the relevant powershell command is "(Add-Type 'DllImport("user32.dll")public static extern int SendMessage(int hWnd, int hMsg, int wParam, int lParam);' -Name a -Pas)::SendMessage(-1,0x0112,0xF170,2)"
yikes. whatever, not like it matters when i'm only going to copy-paste it once. except windows won't let you just paste that into a shortcut. you have to paste it into powershell or a .ps1 file. except for "security reasons" windows doesn't let you run unsigned .ps1 files or something? i dunno. the official workaround is to invoke powershell through cmd with the following command: "powershell (Add-Type 'DllImport(\"user32.dll\")^public static extern int SendMessage(int hWnd, int hMsg, int wParam, int lParam);' -Name a -Pas)::SendMessage(-1,0x0112,0xF170,2)"
microsoft even provides a .cmd file with just this command, and some advice on how to turn it into a keyboard shortcut: you know how you can right-click a .exe and create a shortcut to it on your desktop? well you can ONLY do that with a .exe, so we need to convert our .cmd file. microsoft provides a tool to do that too, and it only takes 10 steps to point it at the file we want to convert. half a minute later it spits out an .exe that's basically a self-extracting zip of the original .cmd file. when run, it extracts the .cmd and runs it, which invokes powershell, which imports user32.dll and then sends the monitor shutdown command
now that we have that, we can right-click it, create a shortcut, right-click THAT, and assign it a shortcut key. success! ...sorta
first of all, the converter is unreliable as hell. 1 out of 10 .exes i generated worked, 1 spawned an empty cmd window, and the other 8 did nothing at all. second of all, windows has certain preconceptions about which keys are suitable for shortcuts. while linux would let me assign any key (or combination of keys) i could come up with, windows is not a big fan of me repurposing the "wake" key on my keyboard. which is sad because the only thing it does is pull the PC out of a sleep state, and i don't need a dedicated key for that when EVERY key pulls my PC out of sleep state. so that's out. guess i'll pick a different key i don't use? after trying 5 different keys with the same result i get one windows accepts... only for it to automatically add CTRL+ALT in front of it. this forces me to use a three-key, two-hand combo, and we can't have that
after some digging, i find out CTRL+ALT is not added to every key. the numpad is an exception. so i compromise and assign the "minus" key on the numpad as my shortcut. the "dash" key on the main keyboard serves the same purpose, so i'm not really losing anything. finally i have a single-key shortcut to turn my screen off! i press it... and nothing happens
why? maybe "minus" isn't valid even though the

>before launching a program via its shortcut key, Windows first polls all currently running programs and asks "Is this your shortcut key?" If so it switches focus to that window rather than spinning up a new copy of the program. The problem happens when a window somewhere refuses to answer the question. This can be a program that's generally non-responsive for some reason, though it can also happen for other reasons (see below). Windows waits 3 seconds before muttering "jerk" under its breath and moving on to the next window to ask it the same shortcut question.
so i try my shortcut again and wait. ~10 seconds later, my screen turns off! hooray!
note: this is the official solution using built-in tools. it's probably a lot easier to just install autohotkey and use that
