I have a NOOB question.

I have a old dusty laptop left to me by my dad, from when he sadly he passed away.

The laptop runs pretty slow.

I was interested in becoming a web developer in future. And i need a laptop for that.

So if i could run linux on this windows, it would help a bunch.

So, in short how do i get Linux on my windows 7 32bit laptop?

Thanks in advance for any replies, love you all. :)

What are the implications of deprecating the k10temp?

I'm a bit worried about using Arch without the k10temp kernel module/extension, related to temperature measurement and similar stuff.

Could someone with a bit of expertise explain it to us?

Thank you very much beforehand!

Restrict shell so u can only use some commands

Hey guys. I am pretty new to Linux so I am sorry if this is a starter question. Is it possible to restrict a shell to some commands? I am looking for a way to have ssh but only being able to use some commands.

For example. A shell where I only can use commands like

Ls, cat, grep, cd, find

So only commands where I can lookup some stuff and not being in danger of changing or deleting something.

Absolut Beginner: How to use CONFIGHZ1000 for a gameserver?

Good morning everybody. I am hosting a gameserver from home and Windows isnt cutting it despite very powerful hardware. After a lot of research it appears the way to go is Linux/ubuntu with a CONFIGHZ1000 Kernel.

While it appears straight forward to install Ubuntu, every documentation about how to use CONFIGHZ1000 seems to require some form of advanced knowledge that is way over my head to comprehend. Like compiling a kernel. Any advice or pointing fingers the right way would be appreciated. Thank you very much!

Is it me, or is Libre Writer and Mendeley integration terrible?

Am I doing it wrong?

In my experience the Mendeley reference plugin for Libre Writer is absolutely terrible. In-text citations aren't too bad (but God help you if you want to save as .docx to collaborate with colleagues), but building a reference list is completely broken.

Is there a better way or better software for academic writing? At this point I would happily install Word for an easy life. Mendeley referencing not available for Word365, as far as I know.

I have used Latex in the past, and whilst it works for me, collaborating on documents is not really feasible.

Help me /r/linux.

Any linux newbies in here?

Hey any linux newbies in here. I have had people teach me a long the way and I figured now would be a good time to pay it back with people stuck inside from the pandemic. I do not claim to be an expert or anything just someone who has time on there hands that would like to share what I have learned.

Tauon Music Box v6.5.0 released

This is my pet project Tauon Music Box. It's a modern style music player for Linux.

While this isn't a major release, its been a while since Ive shared this project on Reddit. Cumulatively there's been quite a few improvements since! The notable changes:

* Added tracker file playback support (mod, xm etc)
* Remote control Android app now available (In fact there's two)
* Added support for the self hosted scrobble server Maloja
* Added radio station search browser
* Added ability to play tracks from a Jellyfin server (Its kind of experimental, no promises)
* Entirely rewritten audio backend
* Enabled Flatpak builds for ARM/RPi

You can check it out the main website [tauonmusicbox.rocks](https://tauonmusicbox.rocks/) or see the [Github](https://github.com/Taiko2k/TauonMusicBox) page.

Max number of open files

Recently I have been reading up on maximum number of websockets a server can support. Naively, I would expect 65,536 (i.e., the max number of file denoscriptors). Posts like [1\][2\] claim they can achieve 600k and >1M concurrent connections. The "trick" they both rely on is increasing the limits on the number of files to very large values.

My question: I cannot find a syscall of open that returns anything larger than an int. How does the OS track open files beyond 65,536? Are these blog posts really creating more than 65,536 fds?

[2\] mentions the limit of 65,536, saying the practical limit is closer to 20k. However, they say this is per IP address. They then go on to discuss that they listen on multiple IP addresses to open up over 1M connections. My intuition is that file denoscriptors are unique across the OS and I am guessing this is the missing link in my understanding. Is it possible to open up more than 65,536 fds? If so, how does the OS resolve collisions that refer to different files? Or is the "trick" that we don't need the files to be different, we just need a lot of handles to the files (i.e., multiple writers to the same buffer)?

Any recommendations to books, blogs, or documentation that can help me wrap my mind around this are greatly appreciated!

Update: int on Linux is guaranteed to be at least 32 bits, which gives on the order of 2B fds. Thanks for all the great responses!

How hard is it to make Icon packs?

Yea I'd like to make one in my free time, I've been making pixel art for a few years and i wanted to experiment with some retro themed icons

I noticed you get 16x and 32x in some of them, any pointers on getting started?

I made a CLI tool to wrap any website into a single executable AppImage.

https://github.com/sarweshparajuli/appnativefy

sudo npm i -g appnativefy

Star it if you like it, README is in detail.:)

https://i.redd.it/1eq2eoaa4yh61.gif

I've made a CLI tool, using Node.JS and Shell noscripting to wrap any website into an executable AppImage format, by making an AppImage there is no further execution required. Just click and run.

Plus, it also changes the scrollbar to minimal black style make it look a little less hideous than the standard one present.

Created AppImages will be built to \~/appnativefy

Currently tested on Gentoo, Ubuntu, KDE Neon, Garuda.

What relatively simple program would you like to see on Linux?

I'm doing my undergraduate final project next semester, and I'm thinking of doing something that is actually beneficial.

I'm thinking of something on the scale of a project manager or a note taking app (like Evernote, but without all the features).

It shouldn't be too simple, like just a GUI for an already made CLI program, and not too complicated. I have 5 months to work on it.

So what is something you feel is missing on Linux? Or already exist, but you feel that it can be better?

Linux Razer Core X EGPU / GPU Switcher AMD only

I noticed there wasnt a write up for switching AMD GPUs on a Razer Core x.

I wrote a simple noscript to accomplish this with details in the Readme.md

Github link: https://github.com/Ralph-Fonz/eGPU\_Switcher

Follow the steps listed, I also added Gnome application instructions

Make sure to Switch back to integrated gpu before restarting and leaving w/ the laptop*
