4K videos lagging on Linux

I am currently running Ubuntu 20.04.2 on a non 4k screen and average hardware. A few months back I had Windows 10 and tried to play a 4k video in it. As expected, it was playing choppy.

I updated the outdated VLC and tried again. This time the video was playing smoothly. I also installed MPC, and the 4k videos were playing just fine it that too.

Fast forward to the present day. I tried the same thing with VLC. It plays all choppy with full of gray glitching screen. Tried all the online solutions to fix this, none of them worked. I downloaded a different 4k video, but same result. I tried playing these videos on my phone (which supports 4k) and they play fine.

Now don't give me "It's because your hardware doesn't support it" because I have played 4k movies on this same desktop months ago when I had Windows and there were no problem. I'm facing this only on Linux this time.

Running Python Script when i open a application

Im using an eink display on my Raspberry pi and am wanting to display custom screens when certain applications are opened (Nethack, Ranger, Vim, etc.) I change the display via a Python program, and am wanting to be able to run the program when I open the applications. Is there a way to make the python program run when I enter the command to start the app (Ex. $nethack) or can I see a list of the running applications and see if it is active from there.

I am running Raspberry Pi OS on a Pi0 and am connecting to it via SSH so only one terminal is open at a time.

What’s your favourite Linux OS?

Hey everyone,

I’m taking a Linux/Unix based course in college and am wondering what some of your opinions are on what is the best version of Linux to run?

I’m planning on installing Linux on my system for my next semester and am curious as to what you all prefer?

I didn't know this incredible shortcut! Did you? Linux is awesome!

Did you know that you can copy a file and paste it in a "File Open" dialog?

It magically write the path to the file in the location bar!

You juste press CTRL-V, that's it! no need to click or select the location bar!

At least it work on my distro which is Linux Mint Cinnamon.

Does it work in all distros? Does it work in your distro?

Linux's Political Implications and Future Outlook

This might be a bit in the weeds, but I'm a relative newcomer to Linux and I can't stop thinking about its socio-political implications.

It seems like Linux and FOSS generally have serious political weight, and not just in the sense of making it possible to, for example, circumvent censorship or communicate anonymously (or close to anonymously). What I'm thinking of is more that right now, there is free software which in many cases is as good or better than its proprietary counterpart, and which is being developed in large part as an unpaid hobby.

Is anyone aware of any scholars that study this sort of thing? I did some cursory googling and it doesn't seem like there are a ton of people writing seriously about this angle.

Just spent about 4 hours trying to figure out what was causing the system to reset to UNIX epoch

...turns out it was a CI build (system is a Gitlab runner) running in a docker container and the execution was C code that resets the localtime for our embedded devices.

Just a word of warning for anyone working with CI/CD, docker containers will reset your host system datetime quite easily it seems.

Dumb question about having multiple ip addresses on one server

I have a server with multiple ip addresses assigned to it. I would like to have different applications listening to the same port on all of the addresses assigned to the server. I was wondering what general field this falls under so that I can research this topic more. Typically in this application I would specify the address/port to listen on as 0.0.0.0:<port> or 127.0.0.1:<port>. I am not sure how I would go about changing that between the different instances of the applications to make them function independently. Any info would be appreciated and again, sorry for the dumb question!

Started Linux via the recovering tool of windows now windows is broken

So I've put MX Linux on an USB drive.

I started my PC again and for some reason the recovery screen of windows came up. As smart as I am, I selected to use the USB drive through that menu.

It crashed.

Then I booted linux from the bios by selecting the USB drive.

Linux starts but I noticed during the install that I forgot to create a partition for it.

So I went back and tried to start up windows.. it can't boot.

But I can still get into the recovery menu of windows by selecting some windows boot drive in the bios.

In that menu I can't to anything. Whatever I click on, it either crashes or tells me that it didn't work and that nothing was changed.

Is there a way to save windows or do I need to install it again via some USB drive?

It's 6am and I'm trying to get this working for some hours.
