Is there any way to do gifs of one line of my nvim?
Hi! I am making my vim cheat sheet and I thought it will be nice to put next to command/key gif which will show that key in action. I don't want to make gif of full size of my window. Many command has effect on small area of text. I want to record as small area of text as needed.
Maybe even a way to write every "state" of gif manually. E.g. showing D key in action:
{1 frame, 100ms} ` I am making my vim {cursor is here}cheat sheet`;
{2 frame, 100ms} `I am making my vim `;
Thanks for any tips.

Is ClamAV Good and Does it Really Track/Collect Data?
I stumbled across ClamAV, which seems like an okay Antivirus for Linux.
It adds a small bit of extra security, especially for emails so it's better than nothing right?
Well, I can't find much info or personal reviews about it on the internet.
And their privacy policy redirects to Ciscos policy, which states that they do collect data etc.
Seems very bad of a Linux AV to collect user data...
But does it really do that and can I turn it off somehow?
I'm kind of a Linux noob...

Anyone still using LXDE in 2021?
As the noscript says basically. I like the idea of a simple, very lightweight DE but development stopped a long time ago now. I know LXQt is supposed to be the successor but it seems to be pretty buggy from what I have read.
Are folk still actually using LXDE and if so, what problems do you have/sacrifice s you have to make?

Linux on ARM future
I'm just curious how serious are popular distros about it.
Knowing that Apple have potential to bend the market to their will in my opinion this can be a great opportunity for Linux to profit from this movement. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Android is built on Linux, meaning that technically with little twinking android apps can run natively on Linux ARM device. Repercussions of this could be huge, potentially cutting off guard big players like Microsoft once again.
May the history can repeat.

bootable USBs
Hi folks, I'm getting into experimenting with bootable USBs for portable OS use but running into a road block.

For both Kali and Tails which i'm looking into, I seem to be finding two sets of instructions:

>(A) one method involves setting up a live copy of your OS on one USB and installing it to a second USB while booted into the first
>
>
>
>(B) The second method is to setup the live copy on a USB and simply boot from that USB

above when I say setup I mean using something like rufus or balena etcher to burn the iso to the USB

SO, is method A or method B proper when using a live version ?

The closes I've gotten so far is a disk error in tails (I think I should not have been using USB 3.0 to boot it??)

and getting stuck in GRUB for Kali Linux (I think at that point I was supposed to target my root drive in grub to make it boot from the USB fully??)

any pointers appreciated, I think I may be finding undated old methods and confusing them for a modern method no sure

PipeWire is a good example of Linux software done right.
Just to show how good PipeWire is, let's compare it to Wayland.
PipeWire has been around for around 4 years, already fully usable and has perfect compatibility with PulseAudio, ALSA and JACK. It's also demonstrably better than its predecessors in terms of performance and usability.
Wayland has been around for 13 years and it's only become semi-usable in the last couple of years. It's still missing a lot of major features and requires XWayland as a compatibility layer, which introduces additional performance overhead. And Wayland doesn't even have any performance advantage over its predecessor.
I'm not attacking Wayland, I understand why it exists. I'm just saying that in the future, it would be nice if new Linux technologies did things similarly to PipeWire, instead of Wayland.

powertop --auto-tune, auto-cpufreq and my own tweaking noscripts, there's a bunch of optional things that I can do to reduce battery draw when I unplug - for example, if I'm not going to use bluetooth, why not turn it off and save power? Sometimes, of course, I want to use bluetooth - so I don't want to put it in a noscript that runs every time I unplug. But remembering the commands to turn on/off these various devices is just too much - and by the time they've been typed in, the savings in battery life may be wasted. Getting a good design app working on linux
Hey guys,
I'm a freelance designer, I've used Linux in the past on a couple occasions, loved it whenever I did, all the option for customization, but also the depth (I think I struggled for a week to get a fully encrypted system working, only to abandon it after I got it working because gpu passthrough wasn't as good as I hoped).
However I always had to go back to Windows, and that's because among all the professional apps that Linux has, none can actually qualify for graphic design, except figma, but that's browser based and is very UI focused, so no print design, and I guess the always mentioned inkscape and gimp, which have a very inaccessible workflow and UI and aren't that great in intuitive use.
On Windows, I use the Affinity suite most of the time, mainly as a manner of taste, but also because they're single time payment apps that rival Adobe, it has counterparts for photoshop, Illustrator+Xd and InDesign. If I had to pay Adobe right now when I'm out of a job I'd have to funnel part of my savings to them, which isn't great. The issue I'm getting towards however is that affinity doesn't have a Linux port. It doesn't even really work via WINE, but it could, if the few issues there are would be looked at by more people.
There's a couple of us Linux fans on the affinity forum who gathered up to vote for Affinity photo (affinity photo, designer and publisher all use the same code base, fixing one would likely fix all others as well; we chose photo because that's the one that has the bug linked under) to get it as high as possible on the wine leaderboard so that maybe we can get this design suite on Linux to cover one of the last gaps when it comes to professional software.
It would help if more people could give at least one vote (ideally all 3) to Affinity Photo that could get as closer to a proper design software suite being available on Linux.
