Hello, I bought some games, but my PC is to slow to run it (just a little). Does Linux support the below games? I wanted to switch to Linux and have better CPU speed.

Why are PPAs on Debian/Ubuntu disliked by many?

Title asks it all. I've seen a lot of hate towards PPAs and I'm wondering why. When compared to downloading stuff from AUR (probably an irrelevant comparison, don't yell at me in the comments), the links for PPAs are most of the time pretty short compared to Git links on AUR, and in order to use a PPA you simply add it with sudo apt-add-repository <link>, run sudo apt-get update, and install the package.

Handy ute for laptop battery saving / ultra rapid development

This utility might be useful in itself but it could also serve as a reminder of just how fast you can develop (simple) programs using python+tkinter.

In addition to powertop --auto-tune, auto-cpufreq and my own tweaking noscripts, there's a bunch of optional things that I can do to reduce battery draw when I unplug - for example, if I'm not going to use bluetooth, why not turn it off and save power? Sometimes, of course, I want to use bluetooth - so I don't want to put it in a noscript that runs every time I unplug.

But remembering the commands to turn on/off these various devices is just too much - and by the time they've been typed in, the savings in battery life may be wasted. So I pop up this dialog:

Now I can just click away and press OK - it's quick and saves errors.

Now for the object lesson in ultra rapid development. That little gui took only about 100 lines of python because it uses tkinter. I dare say it could have been done with even fewer.

the configuration file config.json which goes in ~/.config/toggle-devices \- if you want to play with it, you'll need to tweak the values in there. You can add or remove devices as you wish. Your wifi and ethernet interfaces will almost certainly be different to mine. For example, you might want to add commands to use a different CPU governor or to dim the screen. It's up to you.

Desktop Directory Mysteriously Disappeared

A Directory From My Desktop Has Mysteriously Disappeared and isn't logged... I last runner wine for a '.exe' setup in that folder which failed due to the application needing some windows Files... After some days I found that the entire directory in which the .exe was disappeared and apparently deleted... Is there a way to retrieve the full directory and data... HAs Anyone else encountered this error... Is it a problem with some Linux files getting corrupted?


The '.exe' File was Bakkesmod.exe

Getting a good design app working on linux

Hey guys,

I'm a freelance designer, I've used Linux in the past on a couple occasions, loved it whenever I did, all the option for customization, but also the depth (I think I struggled for a week to get a fully encrypted system working, only to abandon it after I got it working because gpu passthrough wasn't as good as I hoped).

However I always had to go back to Windows, and that's because among all the professional apps that Linux has, none can actually qualify for graphic design, except figma, but that's browser based and is very UI focused, so no print design, and I guess the always mentioned inkscape and gimp, which have a very inaccessible workflow and UI and aren't that great in intuitive use.

On Windows, I use the Affinity suite most of the time, mainly as a manner of taste, but also because they're single time payment apps that rival Adobe, it has counterparts for photoshop, Illustrator+Xd and InDesign. If I had to pay Adobe right now when I'm out of a job I'd have to funnel part of my savings to them, which isn't great. The issue I'm getting towards however is that affinity doesn't have a Linux port. It doesn't even really work via WINE, but it could, if the few issues there are would be looked at by more people.

There's a couple of us Linux fans on the affinity forum who gathered up to vote for Affinity photo (affinity photo, designer and publisher all use the same code base, fixing one would likely fix all others as well; we chose photo because that's the one that has the bug linked under) to get it as high as possible on the wine leaderboard so that maybe we can get this design suite on Linux to cover one of the last gaps when it comes to professional software.

It would help if more people could give at least one vote (ideally all 3) to Affinity Photo that could get as closer to a proper design software suite being available on Linux.

Lubuntu Firefox no connection anymore

Switched to lubuntu yesterday. Everything worked out. Some hours ago Firefox wouldn't work anymore. Enter adress, hit enter - just nothing at all.
How to solve this? Reboot, create second user, nothing helps.
System has internet connection in status and does download (right now it downloads massive amount of updates....).

Want to switch but don't want to dual boot.

So I want to switch, but every time I've tried I've found dual booting very annoying, all I need windows for Is photoshop for college, but like to play some EAC games and VR games, is there a bypass to EAC on Linux? I heard people used VM's but that no longer works, and if so would I be able to use my VR in a VM as well? I have an oculus rift s

how do i update my kernel but prevent packages from breaking?

I have a 3rd party driver vendor that supports up to kernel 5.8.9, I have a linux distro (Fedora) that's currently running 5.6.6, and i'd like to update the system, but I know this will upgrade the kernel to 5.10.2 which the driver will not abide by.

what's the standard practice here? Can I upgrade the kernel to 5.8.9 and all other packages will update to the "closest" appropriate release? or do i have to manually update each package and ensure the update will support the kernel version?

BEST ANALOGIES FOR BASIC COMMAND LINE FUNCTIONS?

What are some good analogies for basic command line functions?

When I took my first Linux course, the instructor used his apartment as an analogy:

A DIRECTORY is a room in the house;

The OS is the house;

PWD (present working directory) command is you asking yourself where you are in the house;

The CD (change directory) command is you going from one room to another;

/ is the entrance of the house;

and so on and so forth.

The analogy wasn't complete, but for the most part students in the class got the general idea.

Now I want to teach my young nieces and nephew basic command line navigation and I'm curious: what analogies are out there that can be used to effectively help a 9 or 10-year-old visualize the command line and the functions of navigation?

This is not a MAC!,

This is actually my Alienware 13 R3 running Ubuntu 20.10 with KDE Plasma desktop; also known as Kubuntu 20.10.

Though I have never been an Apple fan, I can't deny I like how Mac OS looks and feels, I like how stable it is, but other than that, I can say I am not a fan of many things that Apple does. Anyway, this is not about how I like or do not like apple or Mac OS.

In recent years, technology has become more powerful, and more expensive. Few years ago, one could easily afford a very good laptop that ran Windows 7 or MAC OS X very well. Currently however, especially with the stagnating economy due to the pandemic and other stuff, it is becoming harder and harder to afford good hardware that is supported by operating systems makers. Here comes Linux.

It is known to all Linux users that you can run Linux on anything, even a toaster that is connected to the internet, and that there is a variety of distributions for everyone, from complete noobs to veterans, and they are all free. As such, one can not only easily pick a piece of good hardware, even if it is a bit older, and convert it to a fully functional machine using linux, but also customize it as they like, like I did.

This can come in handy for students, especially IT students or young startup developers or fresh system administrators who need to understand how systems work and operate at all levels, provide them with adequate tools for their work and also need something they can pay for, say a 2015 Macbook pro, or dell or so.

So... Besides all features it has, Linux also presents a very good chance to save money and get the work done. We do not have to succumb to marketing schemes and pay fortunes for machines that work now but won't be supported in few years.

16 y/o wants a Linux server

When I asked my 16 year old son to help me remove hard drives from an older surplus computer from the office, he asked if he could have it to set up a Linux server. I’m all for him expanding his knowledge, but why would a 16 year old need a Linux server? I’m a bit suspicious - worried about bootleg software, etc. Is it a bad idea to let him do this? Is there a risk to my home network?
