Single cgroup memory limit for both hugetlb and non huge pages?

Hey, i am fairly new to cgroup, I understand in cgroup v2, it has a separate controller for hugetlb, but the memory controller still only tracks the non huge pages memory. Is there a way to have a combined limitinbytes for all the memory (including both huge pages and non huge pages) a cgroup can use?

Should I switch?

I want to switch to Mint from windows 10 on a 4gb intel i3 computer for speed options and overall just easier browsing, but my problem is I use some apps that just aren’t on linux.

I use adobe apps like premiere pro, media encoder and photoshop and I use screenwriting apps. I know there are good alternatives but I’m just not sure if I should switch.

Can't tell if I'm using llvmpipe or Nvidia.

I'm currently running Ubuntu 20.10 and I wanted to try out Wayland even though I know that XWayland apps won't run with hardware acceleration yet on my GTX 1070. I looked up tutorials on how to prevent Wayland from being blocked when using an Nvidia card and I'm currently writing this post from a Wayland session.

I have a dual monitor setup. Both are 27" but one is UHD and the other is QHD so I have 150% scaling on the UHD monitor. Everything looks crisp and it's a much better experience than I'm use to on Windows or X11...but then I checked the About page in Gnome Settings. It says I'm running in Wayland but under Graphics its says llvmpipe (LLVM 11.0.0, 256 bits).

When I first started using Linux back in October, I had trouble installing Nvidia's proprietary drivers for whatever reason and I would constantly get set back to llvmpipe. I don't remember it supporting high resolutions let alone two high resolution monitors. Not only that but all animations are smooth and CPU usage is only at 3 or 4%.

I can only assume that Gnome is incorrectly reporting that I'm using lllvm. Has anybody else experienced this?

How can I figure out which mail client is being used in Linux on FTK/Imager? I have benn throug var/spool and got nothing, there is no mail file after I click on the user, var or spool directory? Any ideas on how I can figure out what is being used?

Spotibar - An improved Polybar/Spotify integration

Hey everyone!

I was really annoyed at all the existing Polybar/Spotify integrations as they didn't allow me to heart songs on [last.fm\](https://last.fm) or add songs to playlists easily which I've always found difficult so I never really made playlists. This plugin should address these issues as well as doing something I haven't seen in other Polybar plugins - adds a popup config window. This window pops up a tkinter window above where you right click on the polybar module and lets you set some config options. If focus moves to a different window, the popup closes.

Posting this here so people can see this way of making config/popups with Polybar. Seems like a useful improvement for UI options in almost all Polybar plugins!

no keyboard, trackpad, touchscreen

My keyboard, trackpad or touchscreen are unresponsive after GDM. Oddly enough, this is not every time. Sometimes all will work, sometimes none, sometimes only one.

As of posting, my trackpad and touchscreen are unresponsive. I've posted the dmesg output. i2c_hid i2c-SYNA329A is the trackpad and i2c_hid i2c-ELAN2514 is the touchscreen.

I've tried an LTS kernel, but didn't make any difference.

I am trying to switch the 1st and the 3rd character in each line from a file using sed. I tried to do it this way:

Linux Graphics: AMD vs. Nvidia pros & cons?

Trying to figure out which way to go on a new high-end build: GeForce or Radeon.
Someday, in the event GPU's become available again, I plan to get a new one.
And an entire computer actually. Threadripper or Ryzen and higher-end stuff over all.


But I'm a bit torn on AMD vs Nvidia for the GPU.
I'm a content creator, and I also game on Linux and Windows.
I primarily use OBS-Studio, Kdenlive or Flowblade, and Inkscape/GIMP.
BUT, I also might consider moving towards premium editors like DaVinci Resolve or Lightworks.
I'm also toying around with Natron2, but I could eventually move to Blender.


All of my better GPU's have been Radeon, but I'm currently getting by on a lower-end Nvidia Quadro.
I know AMD's official drivers are open-source, and they've often been praised for good performance in more recent times. But in the past some games have been Nvidia-centric especially on Linux. Alien:Isolation was unplayable with my R9-290x on Linux because it was Radeon.
NVENC is pretty useful in OBS-Studio, but I imagine with lots of cores/threads going back to x.264 would be fine, or I could use VAAPI with Radeon.
Would love to hear any thoughts on what I'd gain/sacrifice with one vs. the other currently with Linux.
Cost/value isn't necessarily a concern.

Is it easy/viable to install Linux on a second HDD to dual-boot for practice using Linux, or is a VM better if my goal is just gaming and internet (mostly) ?

Title sums it up. I keep looking at guides and there's information overload from the onset, so before I pick one and work with it, to know I'm not wasting my time, is it easy to install Linux on a second SSD and have my laptop give me the option which drive I want to boot from at startup?

Permissions between systems sharing file resources. Can anyone ELI5?

So, I know permissions on a single stand alone system, but I've yet to truly figure out permissions on multiple systems say, sharing access to file resources.

**System 1 (NAS system)**

* userA - userid - 1000 - usergroup - 100 (users)
* userB - userid - 1001 - usergroup - 100 (users)
* nobody - userid - 99 - usergroup - 99/100 (nobody, users)

/arrayofdisks1/ (o/g= nobody:users)

**System 2 (user machine)**

* userA - userid - 1002 - usergroup - 1002 (userA)
* userB - userid - 1000 - usergroup - 1000/100 (userB,users)
