Can I change my kernel in vmware? I have a spin off of Ubuntu 16.04, and I want to upgrade the kernel and version of ubuntu. Is this possible in a virtual machine?

So I wanted to install this bizzar spin off of Ubuntu called "Mangaka", but that's beside the point. The original kernel is 4.4 however I want to upgrade that to the latest 5.11.6, is this possible to do on a Vm using Vmware? I would also want to upgrade the ubuntu version to 20.10.

Notes:

\- I'm using workstation 16.x

\- idk what to say anymore, I'm just trying to get more characters in because the moderators keep on removing this post cause i'm not writing enough in the post.

Please, try finding an alternative to your Windows application before trying Wine or PlayOnLinux.

I've seen so many people try Wine or PlayOnLinux while not caring about finding an alternative. It is MUCH better to find a good Linux alternative to your windows application since Wine seems to be "emulating" a virtual C drive instead of using Linux's file manager. Please try to find an alternative to your app before trying Wine. Sites like Alternativeto can help you a lot. If there are no alternatives for your app (which is extremely rare) or if you can't find an alternative that you like or works good THEN try Wine.

Example(s): Use Pinta instead of Paint.NET and use Notepadqq instead of Notepad++.

Tooling for managing users, systems, and servers; circa 2021.

Once upon a time, we could use Webmin & whatever to manage our servers are workstations. Now? The firewall stuff barely works (especially the iptables vs FirewallD vs nftables situation). And SAMBA user management really doesn't work if you're using it for AD; it seems like stuff still harkens back to the SAMBA3 days (SAMBA4 came out close to 10 years ago). I also know that at least Zentyal & Webmin, are still Perl-based; when Python & Go have been dominating the tooling space the past 10 years (even with the Py2-3 transition). Even funnier regarding the Webmin-track, is that the default install still includes the use of Flash and Java applets; which I know I've read on here that many a Linux admin will still be dealing with for servers and older systems for the next 5-10 years easy.

Conversely? There are some interesting BSD appliances that can do a bunch of things involving user and network management via a web-UI + versions of software we regularly use for Linux. Windows is still around too; it even can run Linux. Can't easily get Google Cloud or other VPS systems to easily use non-Linux systems though.

These are my observations anyway. I'm sure others have some suggestions or feedback, in light of what we're supposed to be doing in 2021, vs 2001. Hope everyone's keeping safe & well.

Kooha - A simple screen recorder now available

It can record microphone and speaker sounds and works on both X11 and Wayland. Kooha only uses fully open-source libraries such as GStreamer, but unfortunately, it doesn't support desktop environments other than GNOME. One of the development priorities right now is to support other DE such as KDE and Elementary.

Shrink root Mount Point

Hi guys,

I have a redhat installed with two disks

NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 100G 0 disk
sda1 8:1 0 1M 0 part
sda2 8:2 0 1G 0 part /boot
sda3 8:3 0 64G 0 part
vgrhel-lvroot 253:0 0 520G 0 lvm /
sdb 8:16 0 500G 0 disk
vgrhel-lvroot 253:0 0 520G 0 lvm /

I made a mistake and extended the root mount point with the sdb disk, is there anyway to shrink what was assigned from sdb without unmounting the root mount point or remove the disk space assigned completely?

Alma, Rocky or Ubuntu for WHM?

WHM/cPanel has already announced support for AlmaLinux:
https://blog.cpanel.com/almalinux-and-full-cpanel-support/?utm\_campaign=almalinux&utm\_source=facebook,linkedin,twitter&utm\_medium=social&utm\_content=1616004479&fbclid=IwAR3eBgTNYtseulHjRTNivaubYlM6wBy3JRrgbj0XXREPADfZhOQZh0Bfk2M

WHM will also probably support RockyLinux, with Ubuntu LTS support coming soon.

Which OS will you choose for your WHM production servers? I'm tempted to go with Ubuntu because it allows upgrades between versions, so it will be easier to keeps servers up to date without having to reinstall and migrate.

(crosspost) CUPS showing "NOT FOUND" in web gui

CUPS version 2.3.3

i went to a couple places here:
https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/cups-web-interface-not-found-4175525114/

and here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/766328/cups-not-working-in-client-machine

neither of these suggestions helped fix my issue. the first one was even completely backwards. /usr/share/doc is the full folder and /usr/doc is nonexistent. but i digress

something in the config is not pointing to the proper directory to access the web gui to load up printers. i added "Allow all" to the end of 3 of the location configs (i left logs alone) and added port 631 to the listen config. what got messed up?

Kawaii GPU Panel - project overview

Hello.

I love Linux and I prefer using it in my common life. Last thing I tried - gaming. I was really excited, that I can play my favorite games on the good OS finally.

Only the one thing I don't like - lack of GPU control software (like Afterburner for Windows). This is really important for me. That's the reason why I decided to create my own GPU control panel.

Kawaii GPU Panel - this is software, that allows you to control your dedicated GPU (sorry, APUs) parameters, like:

Fan speed (also with a curve)
GPU freq
Memory freq

Also, support of profiles (like in Afterburner) was planned as well.

Why we need this thing? We already have something like that or we have the console in the end!

Answers:

This will be fast and easy.
You can customize the program with your favorite waifu (themes are the main aim of the program).
The program was designed as cross-platform software, so you can use it both on Linux/Windows.

The problem

As you can notice, I didn't provide the link to the repo or any screenshot. This is because the program is in the early stage of development. I planned this software almost 2 months ago, but still created only a prototype of UI and wrote a few lines of code.

I have a few reasons why progress is so slow. Some of them will be resolved soon. some - wouldn't.

Anyway, I want to create this program sooner or later. Because the program was planned as fully open-sourced, I decided to announce my plans to the community (you). Maybe some of you will find this idea interesting and will join in the development process.

To let you know more about the project, I also decided to share my docs and diagrams, that I created to make the development easier for the future me (and because I want to become a senior/designer and I need to practice skills like that).

Link to docs (Google Drive)

Also, I want to share a screenshot with the prototype of the UI, that was created by me as the implementation of the planned UI. All values are placeholders for now.

Link to the UI image

Where is the link to the repo?

Because the project is far away from the finish, I decided to keep my repo private until version 1.0 will be released. If you guys will be really interested in it - I will make it public and share the link to it without problems.

That's probably all I want to say. If you have any questions - feel free to ask in the comments.

Compiling kernel for i486

For fun, I'm trying to get Linux running on an old 486. While it would be easy enough to grab an old distro, thought it would be fun getting a recent kernel on there.

Came across this post which had some great info: https://www.insentricity.com/a.cl/283

However after compiling using those steps, I notice that 'uname -a' shows the kernel as being for i686

My .config only references 486 (CONFIG_M486=y).

I read that a few years ago gcc dropped 386 support, but even trying gcc-4.9 doesn't seem to help.

Would anyone happen to have some pointers for compiling for i486?
