eBook Linux Bible Editions

When the Linux Bible has editions ranging from 1-10 and 10 is the most actual one, is there any use to read the other 9 editions?

Switching from vim to emacs

I have been using vim for more than 2 years. Gotten so used to it. Recently i have been thinking to try out emacs.

Would like to know,
- if it’s a good idea?
- what’s the learning curve?
- can someone share their experience?

Exactly how much private data is saved from adopting Linux?

In a scenario where a whole family shifts to a new place, all new accounts are made, and all computers only run Linux Mint, exactly how much privacy has been achieved compared to Windows or Mac?

When people say Linux is more privacy respecting, exactly what and how much of private data is being peddled away to corporations and remote servers?

Where can I find the ppa-url for purging it through ppa-purge

So made the mistake of installing the system76/pop ppa for installing the pop icon pack only to mess up my system. Now I want to pruge the repository along with the apps it installed through the ppa-purge command. So as to do that i need the ppa-url of sysytem76/pop. So where can i find it or what is the url. `$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:system76/pop' is the command i used to install it.

Thunderbird VS. KMail VS. Kube (VS XXX)?

Hi, I've been using thunderbird for a while but I'm not entirely happy with it (buggy integration with google calendar, quite resource-hungry). Any comments on how KMail or the more recent Kube fare in comparison? Or other suggestion for FOSS mail/calendar clients?

Do you think Linux foundation ignoring Linux desktop?

Linux foundation the main supporter of Linux kernel is now partnership with giant companies like Intel, AT&T, Google, IBM, Samsung, Huawei, Microsoft, VMware but you can't find anything about support of Linux desktop, gnome, KDE and etc on their website.

If you were only allowed to use 1 single distro for the rest of your life, wjat would it be?

Would add an "Ask" flair but there isnt one. Im just curious, guys. There are many, MANY different ones. There are ones with their own special quirks and specialities, there are very basic, but usable ones. Plus, just based on the sheer amount of people in this sub this will be an.intwresting way to learn about alt os's. Also my andwer would be PopOS just because of the preinstalled Nvidia drivers.

GNUBEE 1 - debian buster mips - missing XFS modules

I'm trying to revive a gnubee NAS 1 with debian buster.

Installastion was quite simple, almost just a debootstrap away.

root@stupendonas:/etc/apt# cat /etc/debian_version
10.8
root@stupendonas:/etc/apt# uname -a
Linux stupendonas 4.4.87-gnu #0 SMP Fri Nov 3 14:47:34 2017 mips GNU/Linux

I was also able to activate the two raid with mdraid , but I wasn't able to mount the xfs formatted one :

root@stupendonas:/etc/apt# mount -t xfs /dev/md1 /mnt/md1
mount: /mnt/md1: unknown filesystem type 'xfs'.

root@stupendonas:/etc/apt# modprobe xfs
modprobe: ERROR: ../libkmod/libkmod.c:586 kmod_search_moddep() could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/4.4.87-gnu/modules.dep.bin'
modprobe: FATAL: Module xfs not found in directory /lib/modules/4.4.87-gnu

I'm probably missing some kernel module and also the kernel image seems to be missing, no output from dpkg -l | grep $(uname -r)

IDK if it's something related to the gnubee or to debian himself (I suppose the first one)

any idea about how to get the xfs modules ?

Standalone version of Lightning Calendar (Thunderbird)?

Really like the lightning calendar, but you can only open it as a separate window - not as a separate application. (I need this in order to have it auto start on a different workspace).

Any idea how to accomplish this?

Linux compatible laptop with a 16:10 or 3:2 display

I've been looking for a laptop that has a 16:10 or 3:2 display to install Linux on. It seems like the new Dell XPS 15/17 or equivalent precision is the best choice but are there any other options? I'd prefer at least a 15" screen but will consider anything. I'm even looking at macbooks even though i am not familiar with the software and don't own any other Apple related product. I was hoping Lenovo would release a 15" ThinkPad with a 16:10 display this year but it looks like it's not going to happen.

If you need to share both your microphone and computer sound (but you can't because the most used videochat platforms like Skype and Teams don't support it for Linux), just follow this guide.

I've found this amazing guide: https://askubuntu.com/a/1254093/488029

Just install pavucontrol before following the guide. And after you finish the guide, start pavucontrol, go to "Recording" tab and select the FakeMicrophone.

It works, I've just tried it. Fuck Microsoft that does not even support this simple functionality.

Cool things to do with Linux kernel modules

Whenever I start learning a new “field” of computer science, I need to have a goal to work towards in order to keep myself motivated. For example, I was interested in learning OpenGL with the ultimate goal of creating a Minecraft clone. That was 6 months ago, and here I am today in the final stages of development of a minecraft clone.

As I start wrapping this project up, I am already looking towards my next subject. I’ve been very interested in Linux and operating systems in general, and I’ve heard that Kernel Modules are an excellent place to start. Now I need to find a project that interests me enough to get me started. What are some cool things (project ideas) for kernel modules?

Hey guys, I fixed my program, I hope that I did not cause any mess in your system.

Hi, I'm truly sorry about the program I posted before, I do not intend / mean to cause any troubles or break your Arch system. I won't reason out because it really seems that it was a bad idea, but if you want to know why it is pacman -Qt, here it is. It was pacman -Qtdq before, and I read from Arch Wiki, that pacman -Qt will list only the true orphans, so I thought it would be better. But according to people here it will broke the system by removing databases and other important stuffs, I'm glad that there's a space in my pacman - Rns, so it did not work. But still I'm truly sorry for the mistake I made.

I updated the program and it should use pacman -Qtdq | pacman -Rns, by now. Look at line 168 its now fixed. And I also want to give thanks to the people who pointed it out. I hope I did not break your setup and you still trust me.

https://github.com/jamesaaron97248/sysclean-sesc191y

And to answer the questions others asked me, I use python because for now it is the programming language I'm goot at, I don't know how to use shell noscripting that well, but I'm working on it. And as for root permissions, the program only did ask for root permission to issue the commands. And I will fix the program re/installing apps. Thanks for your critics which point out the errors and problem, I really appreaciate it! I hope you guys forgive me about that mistake. Thanks again!
