What made you choose Linux?

Firstly let me share my story, i moved from Windows 10 for many reasons.

1: It's intrusive

2: It's bloated

3: It's slow to open programs, boot, reboot, shut down, and other stuff, every process takes some time while Linux is blazing fast.

4: It's unstable, past september my laptop started to freeze for no reason, it would freeze for a few seconds then turn back to normal, then i rebooted and it froze completely for an hour forcing me to do a hard shutdown then my laptop wouldn't power on, the blue led was blinking instead of static and the screen was completely black, it was still in warranty so i called tech support and sent it to repair through the mail, 2 weeks later it came back working, no parts were replaced which means it wasn't a hardware issue, they only reinstalled Windows 10 and nothing more.

5: The UI is extremely confusing

6: Bloated start menu (I didn't ask Microsoft to put Candy Crush in my start menu!!!)

After my laptop came from repair, i've waited for the warranty to expire then i installed Manjaro KDE, used it for 4 months and it was pretty solid and stable, then a while ago i moved to Kubuntu, i choose Kubuntu because i love Ubuntu's stability and ease of use but i don't like GNOME, i love KDE Plasma and i wouldn't ever replace it with anything else, i use Linux manly for gaming, most of my games work pretty fine thanks to Steam's Proton and Lutris, i'm using Xanmod kernel and it's pretty great, it's fast, smooth, responsive, and stable, Xanmod feels much smoother than the generic kernel (Probably due to the many performance tweaks plus it's based on kernel 5.10 which had some nice optimizations), while my Windows 10 broke in just 4 months, my Linux didn't break in 5 months, i haven't had any issues so far and i don't think i'm ever going back to Windows.

Now going back to the question, why did you choose Linux? Where you a Mac OS or Windows user previously? What distro and DE do you use and why? If you came from Windows 10 what is it that made you move to Linux?

Kali Linux question

Hi, I'm a college student and I attended a meeting about cybersecurity and I was suggested to try using Kali Linux and just experimenting. So I noticed I'm connected to a random wired connection, what exactly is that? I'm using VirtualBox and I don't see an option to connect to my WiFi. So I tried experimenting with WireShark, is it only capturing data on Kali? Cause nothing was coming up till I opened the browser but even when I closed it, I get data. Thanks for the help, just two questions

How hard is it to make linux versions of software?

Hi, noobish question: but I'm trying to understand the problems of making a Linux version from a dev's perspective. I'm only a novice programmer but from what I've done you have a compiler for your language and OS and that does most of the work. Take the source code into the right compiler and it works. I assume this doesn't scale for more complex programs, but I'm wondering why. Is it the file system? Shell? Drivers? All of the above or something else? I.e. if you had the source code to insert popular application here how hard would it be to make a Linux version?
(Thanks, I couldn't find good info on google)

Is linux the answer?

I have an old 2-in-1 which I’ve used as a YouTube/ web surfing machine but it’s gotten too old and slow with windows 10, I have been thinking about installing some version of linux since it might be faster.

I have a couple of problems though.
1-I know nothing about software installation.
2-The device only has 1 usb 2.0 on the keyboard which is wobbly and dangerously unstable, Idk if I could use a micro SD card as a boot drive.

The device comes with intel’s flagship chip, the atom z3735f with a whopping 2 gigs of ram & 32 gigs of emmc storage, I don’t plan on using the keyboard at all if you’re wondering.

These are the device: https://www.lifedigital.com/product/zedbook/

Trying to reach out someone to talk about RAID to get comfortable with the topic and land a job as a Python dev/tester

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this!

Ok, I'm waiting on the date of the third and last interview to land a job as a Python dev/code-tester. The team leader I will be working with and I got along really well from the beginning and he told me something like "I know you don't have any formal experience and I wouldn't like you not to be considered just because of that, I need you to study about RAID so our client approves your application even if you don't have any experience!" and that's what I did!

I've been reading, writing notes, watching YT videos, etc about RAID. I would really like to talk with someone about this in order to fix ideas, expectations, best practices, etc. Problem is that I come from a pure-math background, so none of my friends really know anything but mathematics.

I appreciate any type of exchange related to RAID and/or software testing. I'll dm you my discord if you're interested. If you think I can post this on a different subreddit, feel free to suggest!

Thanks a lot for this brilliant community btw :)

Which hardware needs Linux driver support the most?

Just out of curiosity, which hardware needs Linux support the most? So mostly what sort of stuff is most commonly used/essential that is without a driver or without the best-functioning driver?

Are drivers usually implemented as kernel modules? Where could one start trying to write a driver?

Reddit Rumours - Slackware is Dead, Long Live Slack

It's pretty ironic how many posts have shown up on the webz asking is the oldest surviving true Linux Distro has gone the way of the Dodo when it isn't even an Ichthyosaur ;) I mean it is kinda understandable that some peeps wonder since it is basically controlled by one awesome coder instead of a committee of MBAs but see for yourself and get rewarded at the same time.

Go Here ===>> https://download.liveslak.org/latest/ and peruse the 8 variants of just the Live Edition (NOTE THE DATES) which will answer the exaggerated claims of it's demise, but better, try it out on a USB stick.

It's not a glorified GUI inmstaller. It's a full OpSys with persistence in 8 variants (mostly DE choices) but The Biggie, 4+GB, is a fire breathing but serious tool. It boots on almost anything, legacy or UEFI, and most assuredly give even a half hour exploring all the apps and tools, will be in your tool kit to fix just about any issue, deep or shallow.

It's worth a look at the very least. As Richard Pryor's "Mudbone" said (deeply influencing every comedian since) "Old fool? You don't get to be old bein' no fool. A lotta young smartass deader than shit!" We could easily substitute "distros".

Hi,

i really like tilix, because of the bookmark section, where i can have commands, ssh connections and folders in a small pop view and select via arrows... but unfortunately i have a strange bug and the tilix development is pretty much dead...

Can you guys recommend an alternative?

Raspberry Pi operating system vs. Linux?

Hello,

I was wondering, what is the difference between some standard version of Linux like Ubuntu and the Raspberry Pi operating system?

If I wanted to design some graphical apps to run on a Raspberry Pi, could I use the same exact development tools and language as I would on Linux?

Thanks very much.

Installing linux on an Android tv box

Hello everyone!

I had the bright idea of trying to install linux on a MX Android TV Box

I have never done anything like this before, but i have installed normal instances of linux on regular computers (kde neon, ubuntu)

I quickly learned that i needed to find a specific linux distro for this specific box, or else it wouldnt work

First issue: I dont know what the name of this specific box is, it says MX on top and not much more

I did however, find the manual, in which is said : Android 4.2 ARM Dual cortex A9

Can anyone tell me how to proceed from here?

!linux@lemmy.ml

First of all, feel free to repost this. None of it was my idea and I'm just trying to communicate what I was told elsewhere.

The past events on Reddit have made some people distrustful of site admins. In a few news/discussion posts there appeared comments remembering past issues with the platform. It was in one of these posts that one user suggested an alternative Reddit-like website: Lemmy.

Personally, I'm not "switching" to it in the foreseeable future. Still, I'm actively lurking, upvoting and posting to try and make the site more active. The largest community in there is !linux@lemmy.ml, so at least (as a Linux user) I can use that and hope other communities will eventually grow to be on par.

All I've learnt about the network in the short time I've been using it is that it's open-source, decentralized and federated with other similar sites. Makes sense that there are so many Linux users in there... Anyway, this is what I found thanks to another angry redditor like me, I think it was only my duty to spread the message to whoever would want to hear it.

PS.: if you do join the site (and lurk and upvote and post), you can select 'All' in the front page and sort by New. This will show you the entire traffic of posts across all federated instances in real time... which is not a lot, by the way, but it's enough for me.

Linux wireless sometimes do not load, upon boot. Sometime does.

As stated I have and had both Ubuntu 20.04 and Elementary OS 5.1 installed along side windows 10. I am currently on Elementary, but thinking of switching back to Ubuntu, or windows since Linux has been nothing but frustration, after the honeymoon appeal wore off.

It boots to linux naturally (without any interference from me), but sometimes when it does it doesn't load my wireless drivers.

If I restart it, it sometimes will fix itself and load the drivers, just restart no additional actions besides restarting. So I do not think it is an issue of not having the drivers, but rather having it load. What is causing this, and what can I do to load drivers when it doesn't load?

Why GNOME looks Tablet and Touch Desktop oriented when it's not on any tablet or most people don't have touch display?

Just curious. I used to hate GNOME but the latest releases made me change my mind. But I still don't get the philosophy behind the design choices.

Like the big icons/folders, no try icons and no window buttons out of the box.

P.S: I am really impressed by GNOME 40. Tried it on fedora and it's very nice but still I miss those things/don't like the huge icons and even the top bar is a little too thick for me. I know I can fix all this with Tweaks but why not as an option but needing a third party tweaks? Why people should rely on extension too that are not made by the GNOME team? I am pretty sure the workflow will be more fluid if it's baked in the system.

Just a couple things I've been wondering about.
