Wondering if someone can help identify my encryption options

Hello all,

Dedicated Linux user for over 5 years, played with for 15. Recently moved to IT that took my interest in r/homelab from hobby to burning passion. I've played with a couple of encryption modules in the past, but like a lot of MS documentation, what I find is often either outdated or poorly written (sorry team, I'm not the best blog-writer either, and we have the amazing capability of making far too many options to always be practical).

Right now I'm looking for something that can encrypt an operating system like Proxmox or Ubuntu Server, but can let the machine and it's VMs start up; protecting the data stored on it unless you have a lengthy, girthy, master password. I have a few different applications for this, but one of the biggest is that I'd like to offer a trade off to my best friend for NAS storage in return for off-site storage for backups of some important data with some low-power hardware I could leave at his place. I've tried LUKS once but had issues with it, and a few other options that didn't quite meet my requirements, so what would be the best option for my current needs? (If LUKs is the best option, I'd happily try it again).

Thanks team!

Copy root from B to A over ssh

I want to make an entire backup of my iPhone using ssh, I have access jailbroken with OpenSSH but I can’t figure out how to copy the root folder itself. So far I’ve tried:

iPhone:/ root# scp-r root@192.168.0.47:./ /directory/to/destination

iPhone:/ root# scp-r root@192.168.0.47:/ /directory/to/destination

iPhone:/ root# scp-r root@192.168.0.47:. /directory/to/destination

iPhone:/ root# scp-r root@192.168.0.47: /directory/to/destination

I just need to figure out how to copy the entire root folder of the device, how do I do that?

Core Linux with GUI display?

Hi, we are working on a hardware product. So far we were using Debian core without any GUI, with a design change the company decided to add an on-device screen on the hardware. We plan this screen to only serve a react frontend on the browser in kiosk mode (fullscreen, no borders, F11). (We also have a web interface, I would like to have one code base for web and on-device screen.)

What would be the most lightweight way to achieve this? I have found about tiling managers that are lightweight like i3 or dmw. Are these be the best way to achieve this? What is the defacto method for on-device screens?

We want to avoid using a distro with full GUI Gnome for saving hardware resources.

Is kali distro save/good as everyday desktop distro?

Hello,
I have made kali/windows dual boot and Im pretty happy with kali, since I use it as everyday desktop distro for programming, while slowly learning to use some pen testing tolls it offers. The problem Im facing now is that I have readed on quora, that kali have lot of vulnerabilities so it can work the way it does during pentestin, wifi scanning, etc. Is it true, if so how much and what other distros is now considered most secure to use for everyday purpose

Do these two books cover the objectives for the Linux+ exam?

https://nostarch.com/howlinuxworks3

https://www.amazon.com/Linux-Command-Line-2nd-Introduction-ebook/dp/B07J43H42Z/ref=nodl_

Do these two books cover everything I need for Linux+? What about Linux Essentials? Would those two books teach me everything I need to know to be good at Linux?

Are there any decent Udemy courses on Linux because I look online and most seem to be garbage, even the “five star” courses.

xrdp - Alternatives - Linux Terminalserver

Hi!

I am using Linux Terminalservers as "websurf-environments" for my Windows users. In the past, I have used xrdp and Nomachine as server to allow the clients to connect:

xrdp:

Does not need an additional client on Windows systems
SLOW with video and autio
very hard to get running with audio
often problems with codepages and num-lock-sync

Nomachine:

Fast (also with audio/video)
Needs additional client installation
FAT client, that often confused my users
Expensive

Do you have any other idea, what I could try? Are you using Linux terminalservers?

Thank you for your help!

Are you company allowing devs to work from a linux based computer?

Hi there,

IT dept in my company is only supporting mac and windows based computers for developers.
We're forbidden to use a linux distro for security reasons (virus and what not, although this is use all over the place in production systems).

I'm working on a business case to change this.

Is linux supported in your workplace for devs?

Is it for the FATMMAN developers?

Please comment company name below if you are a dev working from a linux os... I'll compile and share the list.

Get to know 'trish', a fish shell plugin to manage the Trash folder

demo of trish functions

I made this tool to implement the FreeDesktop.org Trash spec as a fish plugin, so you can manage the Trash folder without leaving the terminal! There are 4 functions:

'trish' is used to send items to the Trash
'trishl' will list what's in the trash. There's also a flag called "-p/--peek" that lets you see what a given trashed folder contains.
'trishr' will restore trashed files to their original location. With no arguments, it presents an interactive way to select what files to restore. With the "-a/--all" flag, everything is restored.
'trishc', finally, cleans your Trash folder, removing its contents for good. It works the same way as trishr, but there's an extra "-o/--old" flag that lets you clean only files that were trashed N days ago or more.

Get trish here.

If anyone here is rocking the fish shell, I hope you give this a try! I'm also open to ideas and suggestion, as this is my first "serious" coding project. I was inspired to do this after seeing the (much more popular) trash-cli utility.

Mkdocs-et

I made a bash noscript to facilitate the use of Mkdocs and Material for Mkdocs, and generate a site with a filtered subset of Markdown pages, which allows the elements of a course to appear progressively:

3 operating systems walk into a bar

The first says "I'm Windows. The most popular, everyone likes me and I don't mess about. I'll have a pint of lager."

The second says "I'm Mac OS. I'm the favourite of artists and hipsters, and I could never settle for a boring lager like Windows. Give me your hoppiest artisanal IPA!"

The third says "I'm Linux. I'll have some water, hops, barley and yeast please."

Linux and Video Streaming / Playback

Can you guys give me some pointings regarding linux and video streaming / playback?

I bought a modest notebook to stream online classes and record a few videos for my students with the following specs / setup:

Samsung Notebook Flash F30
Intel Celeron N4000 1.10\~2.60GHz / Intel UHD 600
4GB LPDDR4 / 64GB e.MMC / SSD SATA III 240GB
External Logitech StreamCam / Canon SL3 (used with HDMI and OBS)

I couldn't acquire a smooth experiece streaming, recording or playbacking 720p or 1080p videos in youtube / google meet or zoom with windows (even with heavy tweaking) or lightweight distros like xubuntu, lubuntu, fedora / mint / manjaro xfce or lxqt, not even with void linux.

But then, out of curiosity, and as a last resort, I tried installing ChromeOS through Brunch Framework to see how it responded and I was surprised to see how smoothly it handled all my needs. Recordings in 1080p with 30 and 60fps, no stuttering or audio lagging, in brief, everything I was hoping for, except the traditional linux experiece that I was used to. It even worked flawlessly with my Canon in the 4K mode on the Camera Connect app (besides the awful native cropping from the SL3 model).

What am I missing? Does it have something to do with drivers, packages, processess, kernel versions (I read something about real-time/low latency kernels) or something else?

How can I acquire the same experience with other distros?
