Crazy Idea: README-based file manager (or plugin)

Basically, it would work like GitHub where, if it sees a README.md (or README.txt, or some common variation), it automatically displays the contents in a separate pane. Ideally, it would be editable directly in the file manager (for instance, a plugin for Konqueror that automatically opens it in a text editor tab).

Some other desired features:

- Relative paths to files/folders should be clickable links (which act as if you double clicked on the file or folder itself).
- Use case: "This folder contains aux files for ../src.sh", clicking the path should open the source file.
- Remote READMEs - add the option to use a README from a different folder so that the current folder isn't modified (for instance, if running a bash noscript that just gobbles up all the files in a directory but you still want to write yourself an overview for those files, such as when the bash noscript was last run and where the output goes; alternatively, this would allow READMEs for read-only directories).
- Automatic READMEs for system folders (e.g., if you open /bin, the file manager loads a README that describes the folder (the READMEs for system folders are stored somewhere else but loaded when that folder is opened)).
- When not editing them, markdown files are rendered (no images, only up to a certain file size to reduce load times).
- Checkboxes in markdown files should be interactive.
- Support for automatic filling - if you edit the markdown with @COMMAND, then when you click away the README is updated.
- @ALIAS searches the current directory for all shell aliases and puts them into the README.
- @RECENT would update with the most recent file change of all files (not including the README).
- @TODO searches text files in the current and sub-directory for "TODO:" then copies the text until the next linebreak and adds it to the README.
- If a .git folder is found, @GITHUB could create a link to the repo; @COMMITS could autofill with the last few commits and their timestamps; @PULL could create a link that, when clicked, sends a "git pull" command in the background, etc.
- Most of this framework would rely on a file manager with built-in text editor, so clicking on a text file should open it where the README would normally appear.

Basically, this would be like using Kate's Filesystem Browser in Detailed Tree view (but with tabs and more filesystem operations) and it automatically opens/previews any READMEs that it sees (along with shell noscripts that run in the background when a README.md file is closed and searches for "@COMMAND"). Alternatively, a plugin for Konqueror that opens READMEs automatically.

I'm a statistician with zero background in making software, but this would be a great way to organize some research projects. It would be convenient to set READMEs so I can quickly go through folders to find which analysis was where and what my current work was. As it stands, I have a README in every project folder that I open any time I open a project (VSCode or RStudio or Kate), so it would be nice to have this workflow be automatic. It would also be cool to have, say, a folder full of photos with a README to show the metadata. I'm a bit of a Linux noob, so the automatic system folder READMEs would help me learn my way around a bit better.

Is there a PDF Reader/Editor that handles advanced forms correctly (Like those used by USCIS)?

I am in the middle of working through the US Visa process for a relative, and For the life of me cannot find a linux native app that can handle the advanced restrictions that USCIS places on their documents.

They have lots of custom designed forms which are all fill-able, with features that I have not seen implemented elsewhere which break evince - Such as Fields that are only fill-able if you select a checkbox before hand, whole sections which are read only unless you enter certain content, and even self updating Barcodes which update as you type information into the document.

Does anyone have any experience with an app on linux that can handle these advanced PDFs? So far we have been stuck using my Wife's Windows machine to do these (God awful), but all my computers are linux-based.

Can't change brightness after failed installation of amdgpu driver on my laptop

I tried to install amdgpu driver for ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS on my hp laptop which has a amd ryzen 2200U with vega 3 onboard graphics. I encountered a problem in installation and learnt that installation isn't possible for some reason and then uninstalled amdgpu. But after all that i couldn't change the brightness at all.i tried to update which updated my kernel from 5.4.67 generic to 5.4.70 generic but still faced the same problem. Also installing 'brightness-controller' didn't help me.I
also tried to open the file etc/default/grub and changed the line

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=vendor"

Then after update-grub and reboot i found that the brightness slider was completely missing!

Then i re-changed etc/default/grub file to the initial state it was in.

After that i tried to update my kernel to 5.8 but that also didn't help.

What should i do?
(The high brightness is very annoying)

Thank you in advance for any suggestion !

Stupid Mint question about setting log in picture.

So It only lets me select premade login pictures and setups, how the heck do I get root access to pit in my own pictures and is their a way to set up my own login styles at all (I can use what is there fine but if I have to go through this much trouble to change a picture I may as well go all in).

faster reboots with kexec!

cool tool i found out about today cut my server reboot time in half! i know it sounds fake but by only rebooting the kernel level and above you can cut out the hardware reboot time. just install kexec-tools then set your kexec config to use grub config and run sudo systemctl start kexec to reboot. (not written very well cause on mobile but wanted to share anyways )

Has anybody found a good eink device for Linux?

I've always wanted to code outdoors. I've looked into buying eink screens (eg. From adafruit) and which laptops they might be compatible with (that thinkpad), but I've never dove into buying hardware that I might not get working.

I found out about this thing recently: https://getfreewrite.com/blogs/writing-success/freewrite-2nd-gen-vs-freewrite-traveler, but I can't find any specs for the hardware nor information about how I might convince it to boot off a usb stick, into a Linux environment.

Has anybody found a decent eink device (with a keyboard as primary input) they can run Linux on?

NTFS drive showing as unallocated on Win10/Ubuntu dual boot

Hi all!

I wasn't sure where to post this, but hopefully someone will have an idea! I've been digging around the internet for the last couple of hours and can't find any satisfactory solutions.

I have four physical drives with a partition each (not including the boot partition):

Ubuntu 20.04 (EXT4)
Windows 10 (NTFS)
Data 1 (NTFS)
Data 2 (NTFS)

The data drives were formatted to NTFS so that they could be shared between the both operating systems. However, only one of the drives show up on Windows - the other shows as two unallocated partitions.

Here's a screenshot of disk management in Windows - disk 1 is the culprit.

The only ideas I have are to either:

attempt some sort of disk recovery via Windows, which will maybe rebuild the partition table.
This scares me a little, as I have 5TB of valuable data that I'm afraid to mess up.
move all of the data off the disk, format it, then copy it back again.
This will involve using a multitude of smaller hard drives, and takes forever to do!

Has anyone encountered this before or have any advice? Is the disk recovery option actually dangerous?

Linux alternative to running as a administrator.

I was recently wondering like how on windows you can right click an executable or a program and click "run as administrator." I was wondering if there is any type of way to do that on arch linux using KDE without the use of a terminal and sudo.

I just discovered a new Distro but don't get mad at me.

Winix: Basically I loaded up Windows subsystem for Linux and installed Opensuse and it felt good. Then I remembered a long time ago back when America was sort of normal there once existed Windows shell alternatives. I hit DuckDuckgo and found the shit was still around. So, I loaded Ciro shell for Windows 64bit and it was cool. Then that very minute, it occurred to me,. a long time ago I was bullshitting around with... what was the name of it, BlackBox for windows. I saw it was still being maintained and down that shit, son. Now, don't cuss me out but I came to realize I can now use all my Windows applications such as Abobe premiere and photoshop, along with all my Windows based PC games and so on.

And i took a pause and I ponder, bothering my own mind and I said to myself, "Taokiller", "File explore" must go and replaced that shit with "File Voyager".

So how do you like me now... I'm computing with an altered beast. Hybrid of two different computing worlds, maybe just maybe, a god damned abomination. I can run and create bash noscripts, play with hacking tools, and Nmap, play Steam games, recording on Adobe Audition, plus Protools, and I'm doing it all on one system. No virtual machine shit this might be obscene. Now I do not know if you find any of this shit here as refreshing as I do but I discovered for myself the best damn Windows operating system of all times.

I didn't create any pics because don't have any place as of now to upload but will provide you the links.

Something really interesting I saw

A while ago I was scrolling thru Google images to find myself a nice Fedora wallpaper. I came across something that drew my attention. I thought it was a win-key with a fedora sticker over it but no, it was a fedora-key! The dude was making "win" - keys for mechanical keyboards each with their own distro logo. I forgot about it in the meantime but now I would pay good-money for it. If I remember correctly he was 3D printing the whole button so the distro logo itself was embedded into the button. If you were distro hopping you could easily change your pop-key to arch-key to etc
