I finally migrated to Wayland

I could never fully migrate to wayland because there was always "this tiny thing" that wouldn't be supported and forced me to X11.

Last year I had to use a Macbook for work but I hated the full year, so now I'm back on my beloved Debian and decided to try the state of Wayland. I was surprised to see that everything I need works perfectly (unlike ever other time that I tried it); zoom screen share, slack screenshare, deskflow, global shortcuts for raising or opening apps, everything. And the computer feels snappier and fluid.

I don't have ~~linux~~ friends so I posted this here.
I guess this is a PSA for long time linux users, out of the loop on Wayland progress and still on X11, to give Wayland a try.

Flatpak "Refreshes", what are they, why they keep appearing almost every day?

This became annoying.

Earlier Flatpaks would receive new versions, the new version would appear on whatever application your Distro uses to update software. Then the cycle of waiting for another version to be made and shipped would repeat, but now all Flatpaks are receiving "Refreshes" that I don't know what they do, it it seems almost every time I check for updates.

What is this? Why this is happening, why this started?

DaVinci Resolve Studio suddenly crashes on launch FIX

I recently had this problem and maybe some of you did too. Despite the error message not giving any clues as to what's amiss, I figured out, besides previous patches, it now relies on system availability of libqt5gui5. Install that library with your system's package manager and you will be good to go.

Terminal emulators: Are they not GUI based, utilizing a CLI-like environment? or can they not render graphical images also?

I have this notion for a terminal-like environment used to browse the internet whilst also being able to view certain media more accurately closer to its original form (this does not equate to rendering a web page in its entirety) This would essentially mean "graphically" browsing the web in the terminal. To better show you what I mean: please read the following:

So-- Some time ago, I stumbled upon this classic fps: Marathon(1995) made by Bungie which revolved around the usage of terminals for in-game progression, This was one of my first interactions with "terminals", though they weren't actual terminals per se, but rather Graphical elements portrayed by a video game engine

In addition to my satisfaction for using such terminals, in all of their beauty and aesthetic component, I realized something in particular about them which was really set the tone for the rest of this examination of mine. It really changed my view on all things computer-related and it also really changed the way In which I looked at and used real world computers.

One thing that stood out immediately to me from these in-game terminals was the way they In which simultaneously portrayed both non-graphical, and graphical information at the same time. (much how like real computers work now adays. ~~in the form of " graphical windows" whatever the hell that is~~ (Of course, this is all done within the games engine)

(Here's one example from an in-game's terminal)

https://www.eyrie.org/\~aerianne/marathon/fatum.jpg

Some time after this, I almost became immediately obsessed with the way computer interfaces function, their purpose, their design, the way the work --and not just due to my mundane observations (partly from this game), but also due to the intense irritation generated from having to use modern day poorly designed software.

There is so much bloatware and unnecessarily complicated and meaningless flat design in most modern interfaces. Its gotten much worse over the recent years, but now it seems peak.-- and it persists! So how to deal with rounded corners and a nearly invisible button with no outline that blends in with the background??? LOL

I, Having to use high contrast options and "reader-modes" for websites is an option, one which is fortunately there (sometimes) but one which shouldn't have to exist IMO. Its examples: like from this game which really set the contrast between good and poor design and to show us what really meaningful design could potentially look like, and there are tons of more examples everywhere. Good UI designs, whether analog or digital, have been mastered (re-mastered?) over and over again, It's been done for years, and we have become quite good at it. --And more recently, it has become revolutionary. One thing worth mentioning: Its not like this has to be an Issue for modern UI desgin either...

Its seems that the only standards for creating such user-interfaces are by the very tech companies which developed and continue to develop them, and they themselves are falling short in some cases!!! It seems that this whole desktop environment was developed some time in the 70s when paper categorization and office filing systems were the standard and that same idea was some how integrated into modern computer systems early on, granted it does work, but I believe we do have better options, options which we haven't even explored yet. The sad truth is that this seems to be mostly dictated by the big Tech corps which deal with all evolution )or de-evolution) of Design elements Technology-wise. --They own the rights to all the useful software, so they should be the ones to maintain it? Until them, there probably isn't much we can do until someone else changes the playfield a little bit. So, for once, lets take an example from this game , this one heck of a game. and maybe go back to good old proper CLI and non crappy software, until modern
corporate minimalism dies down a little... what do you think? I guess Technology and the Medium in which the way technology is presented are two very different things. I'm not saying: don't rely on the tools that you need to get work done, just realize there may be a reason for your stagnation imbedded within the very design of the technologies you use.

This leads me to my original question:

Is it possible to have a both GUI and Non GUI-"like" environment in-which you can essentially use "terminal-browser" for semi graphical viewing? Not necessarily replicating an entire web page but only certain elements: Like photographs or video formats? (Something like this could potentially eliminate all the issues discussed)

TLDR:

So I played a video game (which was nice), but now modern software looks ugly to me and I can hardly read it. I found out "graphical" terminal browsing are a thing, except I found out images look like sh*t, (here's an example using Carbonyl terminal-browser : https://i0.wp.com/monodes.com/predaelli/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2023/02/browsh-html.jpg?w=1160&ssl=1so So, now I'm left questioning if it's even possible to render images graphically in the terminal? If not, what alternatives could potentially replicate what I have in mind (if these alternatives even exist): That is: A terminal browser with minimal to no distraction with the ability to accurately view media (not necessarily exact web page replication to its core, we have regular GUI browsers for that). If not, I may also ask if its even possible to render things graphically in a terminal app (which I believe is GUI based anyways) .You way ask why would someone want to do this?

1. Its looks cleaner and
2. No ads. bonus+

I guess the main driver for wanting something like this would be to read websites in a strict text-like terminal format whilst also being able to view media without hinderance. Up till now i've sorta be reliant on high contrast and other tools which work --okay-- Or Perhaps a more sophisticated browser which can run google's search engine would a better Idea? IF rendering graphical images in the terminal is impossible (perhaps a pipeline where the terminal could output things to a graphically capable environment would would just the same visually speaking?)

Please let me know.

What is the difference between arch and other distros? (Noob perspective)

I used windows (and a bit of macOS) all my life, and a few weeks ago i decided i want to try out linux (see what all the fuss is about), so i installed fedora and used it for a week. After a week i wanted to give Arch a try, just out of interest. I got a computer science degree, so i have some basic knowledge about linux and the terminal. (not much, only basic commands like sudo, cp, mv, mkdir, touch, cd ...). So yesterday i installed arch, and... it works fine? (Not trying to jinx it). Im just asking, because i heard arch is so incredibly hard and breaks all the time. Ive only been using for a day, but from my (noob) perspective I cant even really tell a difference between arch and fedora. Yeah, I use pacmac instead of dnf, but thats all the difference I can tell. I setup my desktop the same as on fedora (KDE Plasma). Will the problems only start to come, or was the installation and setup the hardest part?

Difference between Andronix and userland for linux w/ desktop gui on android (any other recommendations are appreciated too!)

I have an old android phone and have been interested in the idea of running linux on it with a desktop GUI. I've looked up different ways and I found Andronix and UserLAnd. It seems like Andronix hasn't been getting support lately, even though it seems to have a more modern UI, so I am thinking of trying out UserLAnd, which has been updated and has good reviews still. Is there a major difference between the 2?

Are there also other ways to use linux with a desktop gui with linux I am unaware of?

Thank you for your help!

Thunderbird not responding - known issue on arch?

I am completely new to arch linux and just installed it a day ago. For now i am happy, everything works perfectly fine, just not thunderbird. Most of the time when i open it it freezes and i get the message "Thunderbird is not responding". If i close and reopen it, it works fine again. Is this a known problem, or is the error somewhere on my end?

screaming inside my own head at Mint

*deep breaths*

Okay, 20.3 has reached it's end of life-cycle, and instead of diving head long into the deep end of the next Mint distro, I'd like to take the next 86 days and counting to eval my options when it comes to the 'new' mint.

22, 23, 24??? (Honestly, I ran out of fingers and toes about three pages back, soooo....little help?)

Alternative to leader key in Linux

Is there any alternative to leader-key + Raycast workflow in Linux
I know you can have shortcuts for every app. But I want that Vim leader key lime behaviour so I can have groups and map things to other things like actions, commands, etc.

Also, I think this flow is better since I don't have to struggle with different hand position in attempts of pressing a bunch of keys at the same time.

Here's the leader key video for reference:

My Journey with Linux

WARNING: Cringe Inducing, Rambly and VERY, VERY LONG. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.(not really)

Hello. I am going to talk about Linux.(how original) And my Experience with it for 1 and half years.

Chapter 1: In the Beninging

So, In november of 2023, After Installing Windows 11 on my 10 year old compooter (yes i was a windows fanboy), I was happy with it : ) . I Themed it a lot, installing custom rainmeter skins, using startisback, patching UxTheme.dll to install MORE themes. After Streneous Customizing and installing more themes, I was finished with what to do.( i was using my compooter for work too). After a Couple of days, (it was december) i have a thought in my mind, Hey, Let's Dualboot another OS on it! After comparing between Windows 7 and Linux, I reach to the conclution that i would install Linux since it is light to install, a different experience that windows and the best of all..... MORE THEMING!!! So, after comparing between Ubuntu and KDE Neon, I stuck with KDE Neon because one of the things that made me hate linux that it functioned and looked HORRIBLE on first boot. (damn it GNOME) ( i didnt know about Desktop Enviroments till now). So after smashing a kde neon iso to my usb drive, i installed it and i liked it! It was Intuitive, looked beautiful and functioned properly. Then my friend(yes he was standing beside me this whole time) told me to install Fedora Linux. I said no i will not install it but, he convinced me anyway. after booting in windows to flash the fedora iso(for some reason), i find that the WINDOWS BOOT PARTITION WAS WIPED! At least the data was safe. After following some tutorals, I was unfortunately not able to boot into windows. After mounting the windows disk in dolphin, I copied all data to another disk. Anyways, I said I WILL NOT install Fedora on my system. After some time (it was now 4PM), My friend AGAIN said that I should install debian on my computer. After agreeing with him, I installed Debian 12 with GNOME and KDE Plasma. I Used (and again) liked it. My computer would just start to struggle after launching GNOME (I did not even like to use GNOME), I just stuck to KDE Plasma. after a 2 months, i have an itch to distrohop. I compare between Fedora and OpenSUSE, and stick with OpenSUSE. After Installing OpenSUSE, I INSTANTLY HATE IT! No package i wanted wasn't in its repos or was but with weird and long names.(i didn't know obs) After that i uninstalled it. Now comes the easy BIG guns, I installed EndeavourOS.

Chapter 2: Addiction.MOD

After Installing EndeavourOS, I Instantly LOVED IT! I had the freedom I never had before! I started to install very nice apps and such. I also start desktop-hopping and switched from kde plasma to XFCE. I also liked it but switched back. But then, an I Stumble upon one of the most inappropriate and dark web-like subreddit i have ever seen before. /s. r/unixporn. people were uploading the most sick looking desktop *I* had ever seen. Hey, What is this hyprland thing, I said to myself. after searching for it, my world changed. it so FRICKING BEAUTIFUL AND COOL AND MODULAR!(it still is). So, after installing it i had just gone into the rabbit hole of "ricing". i install hyprland on to the computer on to realise that IT WAS FULLY MANUAL. I though just copied this cool looking rice i found on youtube. But, FOR SOME REASON, THE FRICKING DEPENDENCIES WOULD NOT INSTALL. I LOVED THIS LOOK!!! I W A N T E D IT!

Chapter 3: The Iceberg

So, in a way to get that rice i unfortunately fail. then i found another rice(which i dont have links to unfortunately), i start to install dependencies for IT, but my computer just couldnt. it would just crash on compiling bun. It crashed so badly that it TOOK THE COMPUTER WITH IT! MY COMPUTER WAS UNABLE TO BOOT.(listening to hide by dorian concept really gives weight
to this sentence). I just left hyprland because it was not for me. now starts the infinite installing thing. for some reason (probably because i was stupid), i would come home from school(yes i am baby of 15 years) and just reinstall endeavour os with kde plasma FOR NO REASON! I also fail on installing the real Arch Linux for 5 times straight (i still cant). I just wanted my disk to be squeaky clean and have no leftovers whenever i installed packages. so that was bad. i also wanted microsft office 2021 for some reason and gave up on that (but i have found the (not perfect) solution). now it was suddenly march of 2024. i had wasted SO MUCH time in linux (atleast i got good marks in the final exam) that I SCREAMED IN AGONY AS I REALIZE HOW MUCH TIME I HAD WASTED. NO APP WAS WORKING, I WANTED MY COMPUTER SQUEAKY CLEAN(for some reason) AND I COULDNT GET MY COMPUTER TO LOOK "COOL". In that anger, i just smashed windows 10 on the said usb drive and installed windows now relieved with the massive weight off my shoulders. But i had a guilt for the four months i used windows.

Chapter 4: Renaissance

Because, just after I installed windows, i saw people LEAVING WINDOWS. so , now i was in a weird spot, my friend was doing good in linux (the friend from the beninging chapter) my brother switched to linux after i left it. So, I backup my stuff, and smash the same damn usb drive, with Kubuntu. I was now relieved with the guilt! i used in for a month (it was august 2024 when i switched back to linux). Then I again installed the easy BIG GUNS. I installed EndeavourOS with a promise that I will only reinstall it when it becomes so full, that even removing the apps doesnt fix the issue. Now, i am living happily ever after! I use KDE PLASMA now with the AeroThemePlasma that hopefully installed!(listening to vaporwave really while writing the Renaissance chapter really feels like a good ending!)

Moral of the Story: Dont do drugs kids and dont become an aggressive reinstaller like me

Hope you have a nice day reader!

Restored old Samgung NP300E5C Laptop (Jun. 2013) AntiX 23.2 on 1.5GB of RAM

Photo of the restored laptop

My stepfather has a couple of old laptops lying around with Windows 10 installed (completely unusable because of low performance) I told him I could restore them by installing a new OS and agreed.

He actually used that thing for work, 10 minutes to boot, 3 minutes to open anything...

Now it just takes 3 seconds to open the browser or libreoffice and has a very fast response time. I am not sure if you could even browse on this thing using Windows...

Kept everything on a different partition because of +40gb of data. AntiX on a new partition using the rest of the disk.

Probably going to work on another of his laptops after he experiences the performance of this one.

Only shitty thing about AntiX is 1. I dont know to make shortcuts to folders 2. I dont know how to start the wifi tray at boot

But that's small price for giving a new life to a laptop.

Btw this thing was supposed to run Windows 8 (wtf)

Photo browser with iPhone live photo support

I've searched high and low and I don't think this software really exists but I thought I'd ask. Apple are disabling E2EE in the UK for cloud-stored photos and I'm conscious that the providers that do still offer it may also withdraw these services eventually. So I'm looking at bringing my personal computing back in house and looking for local storage solutions.

Proton Drive and Ente.io both manage to replicate the iPhone's photo reel with Live photos but the local software I have tried treats the video component and the photo component as two separate .mov and .heic files. To make matters worse, preview of .heic and .mov doesn't really seem to work on gThumb, Shotwell or digikam either.

Is there any software that I can run locally that could replicate the Live photo functionality of iPhone, Proton Drive and Ente.io to display a photo reel with preview thumbnails and combine the photo/video components of each capture? I'm particularly looking for a relatively lightweight photo browser rather than something server based like Nextcloud.

Which rarely used UI/UX design patterns would you like to see more in open source software?

Inspired by the leader key post. What I mean here by UI/UX design patterns are ways to control applications that are different from the bog-standard buttons/top menubars/hamburger menus/default hotkey combinations.

For me personally, the feature that I now crave in any relatively complex software is the Command Palette. I've primarily seen it in Microsoft's products (VSCode, Windows Terminal, even Word's Search is functionally a command palette) as well as Obsidian.md, but I can pretty much no longer live without it in those apps. It's basically a mini-terminal for controlling software-specific functions/settings that shows recently used and pinned commands first.

I struggle a lot when it comes to remembering specific shortcuts (unless I use one app for literal years), which leads to me rarely using certain functionality. With the command palette there is a lot less friction between what I want and what my fingers need to do, I just type what I need the program to do and it executes that action. In particular, I've started using tmux-like functionality in WT a lot thanks to the palette. I also use it with various Obsidian plugins that I keep handy, but not handy enough for me to learn all of their shortcuts.

I would particularly like this functionality in non-linear video editors, which otherwise require a lot of shortcut usage or clicking through tabs.

To add on to that, in CLI-land I also prefer longer command names that make it immediately obvious what is going on over overly-abbreviated command/param names that make you sound like a wizard having a stroke. This is primarily due to how powerful and omnipresent autocomplete is these days and, of course, I'm talking desktop use and personal shell noscripting here. I'm completely on board with the classic unix command/param naming for things like server administration if push comes to shove.

What would you like to see?
