How is everyone liking linux mint (cinnamon)?

Just got a new computer and am of course blessing it with anything that isn't windows 11. I have chosen linux mint to do the job and there is something so satisfying about using the preinstalled windows to do it. Either way, windows gets more deranged by the release and linux mint cinnamon eddition is keeping me sane as my once nice operating system declines rapidly. Anybody else have a favorite distro that serves this same role in keeping you sane? I know this is hardly relevant to what this sub reddit is about but man am I happy to have an OS that is everything windows could never be. Thought I'd share and see what yall have to say.

Summoning Bethesda modding fans and gamers. Would I lose anything from switching to Linux?

Hi, I mainly use my pc for gaming, I own a steam deck which updated my rusty knowledge and beliefs about linux and since my pc became laggy, I wanted to switch. Would I be able to play my beloved modlists? Would I still be able to run one of those less known windows-only softwares or games? what about other games stores like epic games, gog etc? is streaming on twitch good? I have NVIDIA gpu, would I lose some tiny feature if I switch? I know most of these questions sounds dumb. They are but, have you ever had an easy math test that was so important that you would use a calculator even for easy basic operations, just to make sure? that's me right now.

infos:

RTX4070Super

Amd 7 3700x

32GB RAM

\- in love with SteamOS but I doubt I should use it on my desktop yet

Why do you prefer linux?

I have only ever used Windows and MacOS. I am a regular person but I wonder why do so many engineers prefer linux. What makes it different?

How do you install it? Do you install it on Windows machines? Explain to me like I am 5.

So, is Ventoy confirmed safe? Alternatives?

Afaik, the blobs haven't been reverse engineered yet. I heard YUMI uses a lot of stuff from Ventoy, so is it not safe? What about E2B?

Filler because automod: Ventoy is just such a great tool. Not having to have multipe USB sticks for different OS's is so freeing and updating is so incredibly simple. I dont know what im gonna do if I can't find an alternative :(

discussing your experiences with linux

basically for the past month, i’ve been experiencing terrible just terrible stability issues with windows, even stripped out windows, and now im thinking about switching, i have fun optimizing stuff in windows but it’s always no use since it’s just dogshit.

can you please tell me your experience with overall stability with linux?

what should i expect when it comes to process, and like if i do some customization stuff like for example set the texts to green will that increase cpu usage like windows does when you do any sort of customization?

thank you in advance, you will help me so much but telling me your experience.

Time to Boycott HDMI Cables for Good: Open Source HDMI 2.1 or Nothing

Alright, Linux community, we’ve had enough. For three years, Red Hat devs have been waiting on the HDMI Forum for open-source specs for HDMI 2.1. And what do we get? **Crickets**. Meanwhile, we’re left with half-baked drivers that barely work and a whole lot of headaches.

It’s time to face the truth: HDMI 2.1 is still locked behind corporate greed. We’ve been promised the future of display 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rates, the whole shebang—but what we’ve actually gotten is a closed-source nightmare.

So here’s the new plan:

* We’re boycotting HDMI cables for good.
* We’re done with your overpriced, half-functional cables.
* We’re switching to DisplayPort, or, if we must, we’ll go back to VGA.

The HDMI Forum needs to wake up. We want open-source HDMI 2.1 specs, and we won’t stop pushing until we get it. So let’s make some noise—because we’re done waiting.

Beginner Linux Distro Choices

Hey all, after some distro research I was hoping to install Fedora's Aurora and use a window manager like Hyprland.

As I'm pretty new to linux I'm realising that may not be possible as Aurora is a more immutable distro I believe. Has anyone had luck using Hyprland on Aurora or have any recommendations that would be similar?

Hoping to use this machine as my main personal computer. Some gaming through steam, social media, light photo editing, programming...

Creative ways to use ubuntu from a mac

I own a 32gb windows machine which i was dual booting for over a year with linux mint . Now i recently got a decent mac with not so much memory. I am planning to use the other laptop to compensate for the loss in memory. As a first step wiped the ssd and installed ubuntu server LTS, installed docker and offloaded any python side project to vscode ssh tunnel. Also have installed multipass on the linux laptop and plan to use it to learn kubernetes. I was wondering if there are any other creative ways to use the ubuntu server laptop from a mac?

Google is againsts sharing of Linux distros

BEWARE! When you upload an innocent linux distro or you own linux distro flavor iso images on google drive. It will automatically flagged by google as malware if the iso image size of a distro was below 1GB. Google is becoming more incompetent.

Dock station that supports Linux

Long time Linux user (off and on). Setting up a laptop workstation for my new job and I'm shopping for a dock that supports Linux. When I search "laptop dock linux" on Amazon, the top searches all explicitly say that they don't support Linux. So where do I find dock stations that support linux?

Camo Studio alternatives for Linux?

I run Fedora and I wanted to use Camo Studio ever since switching from Windows 11 but it's not available for Linux.

My laptop has a really crappy potato webcam and I'm going to take online meetings for some of my college classes and I really liked Camo Studio on Windows because you can not only use your iPhone as a webcam via USB or Wirelessly, but it also supports buil-in tools like framing, backround tools, image enhancements, overlays, AR, changing lenses, audio settings, etc. you get the idea.

I know there's Iriun and Droidcam for Linux but they don't have anywhere near the same capabilities that Camo offers. I really don't want to go back to Windows.

Do you know any good alternatives? Or should I resign and use Iriun even though it's basic?

Fun Linux challenges for 12yo

My son is 12 and has always had a fascination with operating systems. He currently has 65 Windows and Mac VMs on his computer. Sometimes over a weekend he'll upgrade a VM from Windows XP all the way to Windows 11 just for the challenge, and he loves explaining the different UI elements and wallpapers and what changed from one version to the next.

I've been trying for some time now to get him interested in Linux (though my own skills with Linux are only intermediate at best) hoping it may segue into a career path someday, but he's been largely uninterested (not being able to run Fortnite is a huge deal-breaker for him). I've been bribing him with challenges (or "bounties," in Fortnite parlance) with cash for things like choosing and installing a distro, customizing it with wallpapers, and demonstrating mastery of basic terminal commands. He successfully got EmuDeck set up in his Mint install for all his emulators, so that's one killer app for Linux, at least.

TIFU though. After watching the latest Pewdiepie video he showed an interest in Hyprland, so I offered a bounty for getting that up and running without realizing quite how daunting a task that was. There were tears.

So my question is: does anyone have any other ideas for fun Linux challenges that might be suitable for a Linux beginner like him?
