I don't understand people who distrohop when their distro makes a slightly bad decision

There is someone else i know who dropped Linux Mint in 2017-2018 for Kubuntu because they dropped KDE(Perfectly fine decision).


Then in 2021, he went on this Ubuntu bashing trend(He said canonical is outdated, typical excuse to distrohop), and went to Fedora and started annoyingly pedaling it online even when the discussion wasn't about Ubuntu or related to it.


Now, in 2025, he's complaining that every KDE and Linux update is bloated and that he's now switching to BSD. He accused Linux of trying to be like Microsoft.


He will probably hop to BSD, complain that his drivers don't work and move to something else(You guessed, something like Temple OS).


Honestly, if you're the type of person that doesn't even think of the OS when doing your work, don't distrohop like mad. Don't switch because of trends. Because you will be setting yourself up for disappointment.

ESXi to KVM

A friend of mine manages a small set of VM hosts running ESXi for a vendors application. The vendor has hinted that they are going to migrate to RHEL/KVM because of the inflated license costs with Broadcom. Knowing that I have used all flavors of KVM - I was asked to assist getting KVM running in a lab so that he can become more familiar with it.

My issue is that I can’t decide whether to have him use Virt-manager (knowing it is being deprecated), Cockpit, or Proxmox. We don’t know yet how the vendor will implement the management so I’m stuck on recommending where to start for him.

Which way would you lean to get him started?

Trouble installing Ubuntu

I feel I need to share my recent installation experience in case anyone else runs into it.

Before I do though, the following need to be known:
- I’m new to Linux and know just enough about terminal to get around, but I still depend mostly on the UI.

- I was installing Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS as my primary PC OS.

- My PC is a gaming build mixing Corsair and Asus hardware.

Okay, now for the story…

I downloaded Ubuntu’s ISO (version above) and flashed it to a drive using my Mac and balenaEtcher. Both download and flash did not have any errors.

However, when I went to boot my PC it pulled up the installer just to get my hopes up that this would be smooth.

That’s when the installer started to crap out on me. You see, I would flip through the install pages, but every darn time it would either quit the installer and mount some hardware or it would quit the installer and unmount some hardware.

The hardware it kept mounting as drives were called “loop” and they could not be opened.

So my resolution? Download Ubuntu 24.04.0 non-LTS and try that. That DID WORK and I’m happy to say that after much troubleshooting and swearing I’m now a happy Linux user.

Any idea why this happened? Any ideas what was actually going on for me?

How trustworthy are FlatHub packages?

Take Chrome, for example. FlatHub says it's "by Google", but also "Unverified" and "Not supported by Google". Then who is uploading / packaging it? Who am I trusting, if I use it?

I like the additional layer of security and control that bubblewrap / flatpak provide, but I don't like having to trust some (unknown, to me, as of this writing) third parties not to screw up or trojan the binaries...

Do you NEED to use Linux? Or you just want to?

What is your use case that forces you to use Linux?

For example you are a dev, or work in labs, or you're a pentester, you run servers?

I want to try and estimate based on feedback how many of you need to use Linux, Vs how many of you are just choosing to use desktop Linux or Linux on your phone via userland or turmux etc,

By needing to use Linux it doesn't have to be a career, you can be a student who's too young to even work, but you need to use a certain Linux tool that windows doesnt offer. That still counts as a need.

Why OnlyOffice not popular than LibreOffice

I have been using LibreOffice for more than 9 years because many websites on the internet said that "LibreOffice is the best open-source office suite." So, I started using it.

Sometimes I downloaded Apache OpenOffice, but it looked too outdated, so I deleted it and continued with LibreOffice.

However, nowadays some weekly FOSS YouTube channels are making videos about OnlyOffice 9. It looks similar to Microsoft Office. Has anyone tried it? Is the 9th version any good? Should I try it?

Desperately in need of a Sepia /Beige theme

I've had enough of light theme, it is too bright.
I've had enough of dark theme, it is too dark.
I fell in love with the sepia colour scheme available on wikipedia and firefox reader mode.

Beige background, brown icons, black text.

Desktop environment should just allow you to customise your colour scheme like android does with material you, choosing a background and highlight colour yourself instead of bland boring binary dark and light.

My Linux survived where Windows died

TLDR: Modern Linux drivers and hardware compatibility are not as finicky as some people say.

My government keeps trying to break our energy system to goodbye; a recent malfunction of power mains fried my old PC's PSU and motherboard but the drive fortunately survived. I bought a slightly more recent system on the local flea market (i5-7400 instead of the old i7-3770K) for the whole whopping €70 and plugged the drive into it. The drive had both Windows 10 and Fedora 42 KDE installed.

The outcome: Fedora picked up the new hardware like nothing happened but Windows is stuck on "getting devices ready" forever. Guess it's time to reclaim the Windows partition.

Great job, Fedora and Linux in general. I had to tell it someone and decided to do it here because where else, right.

Built a tool to sync Obsidian notes across devices without subnoscriptions or Git commands

As someone who spends a lot of time on Linux and likes to take notes in Obsidian, I found syncing notes across multiple devices frustrating. I distro hop often, and making sure my notes are updated everywhere without paying for Obsidian Sync or fiddling with Git commands became a problem I wanted to solve.

So I built Ogresync, a free and open-source tool that handles syncing your Obsidian vault automatically using GitHub in the background. Instead of opening Obsidian directly, you launch Ogresync, which syncs your vault, opens Obsidian, and then pushes your changes after you finish editing. There’s no need to remember Git commands or worry about merge conflicts.

I know there are plugins that do something similar, but they often expect users to be comfortable with Git. I wanted a solution that just works out of the box, even for people who don’t want to deal with version control.

I’d really appreciate feedback from fellow Linux users. How do you sync your notes right now? Does this approach make sense or is there something you’d want it to do differently?

Software to format a book

Dear reddit people,

My grandma is writing a book on her familys' history.
I, being the computer literate grandchild, am task with formatting and diagramming the book. Unfortunately, the only software I know for that is Microsoft Publisher and Canva. Anyone know a Foss alternative for those?

What is the most compatible online file storage service?

My use case is not uncommon (I think). I need I file sharing service that works flawlessly across all my devices running windows, osx and Linux. Linux is my main driver but I do require easy access to files in the other devices.

By easy access I mean: it needs to be integrated into the file system and accessible through the file manager.

A long time ago I used Dropbox, and the desktop application worked quite well on Linux. Then I switched to Gdrive and got really slammed in the face with the “there’s not really a desktop app for this, sorry - not sorry.

So, which is the best service for Linux users that want compatibility with the rest of the world?

Linux Lenovo issues with WIFI and Bluetooth after Updating

Hello guys,
in the last months I got many issues after Updating my Linux System with WIFI and Bluetooth and I want to share my experience to help you out if u got the same issue. I personally found not much about this topic that could help me, therefore u got this to help.

I use Fedora on a new Lenovo Thinkpad T14 Gen 5 AMD

At fresh install and not after several months I faced the same Issue that after an update of the system WIFI und Bluetooth disappears. Only after I got in sleep Mode and login again just bluetooth shows up. After a restart nothing shows up again.

The issue was, that die BIOS got an Update as well. It seems Lenovo + Linux + Qualcomm got several issues after an BIOS Update.

To solve the issue in my case I got to the Lenovo Support site and downloaded the ISO File of the latest BIOS. This Version was two months older than the Version I got installed automatically. I flashed this to my USB and updated the BIOS to the older version. Now my WIFI and Bluetooth works again.

If u got the same issue and Google can´t help I hope u see this and maybe is solves your issue as well.
