Dell Precision M6800 - Advice on getting everything working

I know is immensely particular but for god sakes this is Reddit and if anywhere is going to have someone using this particular model of computer on linux then it's here.

I have a Dell Precision M6800 laptop that I love, and it has plenty of resources to run Windows 11. It runs Windows 11 just fine in fact, but I hate it. I want Linux on this thing. Problem is that damn NVIDIA GPU.

I have the Quadro K3100M chip, and I've hit so many issues getting this to work at all because of driver problems. I understand that this is largely the fault of NVIDIA not fixing an incompatibility with newer kernels, but there HAS to be a way.

I just got this sort of working on Kubuntu 22.04, but not fully. Kubuntu 22.04 is not supported anymore for security updates, and unfortunately going to 24 breaks the drivers altogether. I also tried just for the lols to find a Dell image of Ubuntu that would have been pre-installed on one of these devices, but unfortunately I've found nothing - and the driver pack from Dell does not play nice either.

If there is someone out there who uses this lovely behemoth of a device, what Distro are you using? And how did you get the GPU Drivers to work, if you did at all? Trying openSUSE next to see if I can replicate what I did on Kubuntu.

What do you think about iSH

I have recently stumbled upon the iSH app for iOS, but I can't decide if I like it or not.
I can definitely see its uses, but it also seems like a significant security flaw if not treated carefully.

I would like to know if and how you guys use it.

I find it especially intresing for git syncing of something like an obsidian vault.

Linux alternatives to windows apps

I am trying to slowly switch over to linux (fedora with kde). There are quite a few apps that have become part of my daily usage in the background. I was wondering what are the alternatives I can use on linux fedora-kde.

\- EqualizerAPO: I have a system-wide EQ that has a very custom and precise profiles that are unique for each of my output devices. Speakers are unbarable without eq, IEMs have a baseboost and a channel balance, etc. I also just like to play around with the EQ. Again, system-wide is important to me.

\- rawAccel: I have slight wrist problem, so I permanently have a 5 degree rotation on my mouse. I also have a specific mouse sensitivity. I also like that I can set a unique compensation on my different mice (laptop, different mice for on-the-go), but that part is not essential for me.

\- X-Mouse Button Control: I just use this to map the 2 buttons on the side of my mouse to horizontal scrolling.

\- Wallpaper Engine: I just really like my wallpaper changing automatically every so often and seeing some movement.

\- PowerToys-FancyWindows: I have quite a few different positions I can snap windows to using win+arrows.

\- Outlook: I know there is a solution, I just don't know it yet. I have a university email I need to keep an eye on. I know I should use wine or something like that?

\- Google Drive: I have a google drive that is synced with my university folder that is stored locally, just as a backup and for mobile access.

Looking for Recommendations

Hey all! Looking to pick up a good laptop for Linux from Best Buy currently. I have a trade in credit available for around 800 and looking to use it there. Any ideas are great! Thanks in advance.

I'm a software developer by trade so that might be relevant.

Built a little CLI tool to track my work sessions, figured I’d share it

I'm a backend engineer and always feel like I'm actively trying to remember what I did the previous day during my standup meeting. I used to take physical notes, but thought I'd built a tiny CLI tool for this instead. Called it `timr` and it helps me track start/stop sessions and generate ai summaries for them.

It’s just a single binary, no server or account needed. You can log sessions, filter them by category, and even generate an OpenAI-powered standup summary that gets copied to your clipboard. I made the whole project open-source.

I mainly made it for myself, but if you’re into terminal workflows or just want something lightweight to track your time without a bunch of overhead, it might be useful to you too. Repo’s here: https://github.com/miguejarias/timr

Opensource AMD drivers lifespan

Hello guys I have recently made the switch from Nvidia to AMD GPU. My question is can I still use this driver when AMD itself quit support for RX580?

When I used Nvidia in the past (proprietary drivers) sometimes I couldn't upgrade to a new release of for example Linux Mint due to newer kernel that didnt support older Nvidia drivers. Right now I use Fedora Silverblue and it s working great. No need to load kernel modules anymore!

I like to use my tech for as long as possible (that's the main reason I switched to Linux, besides privacy and security) so my question is will the opensource AMD GPU drivers get support from the community?

Thanks

A possible issue with Kde or Kubuntu.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/s/4K8WWyJuNe

I made a hasty critism of Proton some days back. But it seems like most of the problems were from KDE/Kubuntu. I had switched to Linux Mint and tested the same games. They work right out of the box. I was reluctant to use Mint cause I was really fascinated by Kde, especially it's connect app and deep customisation. But it seems like Kubuntu has issues to be fixed. I admittedly didn't like the default aesthetics of Mint Cinnamon, now I'm trying out Mint.

Just wanted to clarify that my previous issues were Kubuntu/KDE related. Thank you.

Which CLI tools help you most to interact with web applications?

I see many applications that are outside of the Linux machines can be handled well in a terminal most of the time rather than on browser. Do you use any such? Which were the most helpful?
I have come across these
1. WordPress CLI
2. Gcloud CLI
3. Redis CLI
5. GitHub CLI
