Messed something up...

So, I was running Debian 12 in a VM for a bit and reasonably comfortable with it and increasingly annoyed with Windows both pestering me to input my key if I try to do anything on it (even update the time) or upgrade to 11 because 10 won't be supported in a month or so

So

I decided today to oust Windows and make Debian 12 the main boot. Trouble is, my computer (hardware) is really new. A friend built it so I don't have all the details but they built it not long ago. So, after installing Debian 12 I get a config error which I was told indicated incompatibility with the hardware. I then go and get the new release hoping this will resolve the issue... it does not. When I boot into BIOS/UEFI I see 3 options, Debian 12 and two named for my USB with the .iso file for Debian 13. If I choose Debian 12 I get the install screen but the same config error after install, I eventually end up at a "terminal" where I can input my username/pw but it doesn't recognize any commands. Or I can choose the USB Debian 13 options which takes me GNU GRUB. I'm not really sure what to do here.

grub> ls

(proc) (memdisk) (hd0) (hd0, gpt2) (hd0, gpt1) (hd1) (hd1, gpt3) (hd1, gpt2) (hd1, gpt1)

I don't really know what this means. Why isn't it recognizing my USB as something to install from? and also reading it twice? Is there any way to clear everything and start over? It was probably hubris to try to run this outside of a VM. I'd even accept defeat and take instructions for getting Windows back at this point.

(wasn't sure what flair to use for this)

Python IPTV Player open source.

This app is just a player — it doesn’t come with any channels. To watch, you’ll need to use your own free, local over-the-air M3U URL channels from your provider.

Note for moderators: IPTV player apps like this are openly sold on the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and Microsoft Store. This isn’t piracy. We don’t provide any links, and we only encourage the use of legal, local OTA M3U streams.

The player itself is built with Python, completely open source, and free to use.

Why does NVIDIA still treat Linux like an afterthought?

It's so frustrating how little effort NVIDIA puts into supporting Linux. Drivers are unstable, sub-optimally tuned, and far behind their Windows counterparts. For a company that dominates the GPU market, it feels like Linux users get left out. Open-source solutions like Nouveau are worse because they don't even have good support from NVIDIA directly. If NVIDIA really cared about its community, it would take time and effort to make Linux drivers first-class and not an afterthought.

Adding OCR to Spectacle

Hi all,

I wanted to share with you my article regarding how you can integrate OCR into Spectacle.

This allows you to directly extract text from an image without having to use seperate apps or services.

Here is a link to the article and a quick demo below

The GPD Pocket 4 Mini is tiny, but geared for a professional audience (KVM, Card Reader, RS-232, 4G LTE options). Is there a way to have similar experience (w/ Linux) on one of the new gaming handhelds like Asus ROG X, Zotac Z One, Steam Deck, maybe with added keyboard/dock?

Anyone done anything with old Steam Link hardware?

Just wondered if anyone has done anything with the old Steam Link hardware?
I found one in a box unopened from when they had the deal with the controller for 9 quid. Wonder if I could put Linux on it and use it as a thin client or low power server for something or any other uses.

Linux for a general use - it's ready

I've been Linux-curious for the past 25 years.
Always ended up switching back to Windows or Mac — either because of hardware issues, app support, or just the pain of troubleshooting (too many variables, nothing really "mainstream").

But in the past few months... I switched all my laptops to Linux.
So, what changed?

Most of what I do is in the browser anyway.

The few apps I need are there and working: Signal, Spotify, OnlyOffice (MS Office replacement).

Hardware support turned out to be great.

First test: an old Huawei MateBook that struggled with Windows 10 and wasn’t even allowed to upgrade to 11. Installed Linux Mint → suddenly the machine flies. Temps are great, system is super fast, everything loads instantly. As a media/web machine for the kids? Perfect.

Next step: replaced Windows with Mint on my wife's Lenovo Yoga Slim 14. Same result. She didn’t even notice the switch — she basically just uses the browser anyway.

Troubleshooting? Honestly, using ChatGPT was a game-changer. Every time I had questions, I got clear answers, tweaked settings, and everything just worked.

Then came the big decision: I needed a proper laptop for freelancing. My first instinct? A new MacBook 😅
But after a long debate with ChatGPT, I ended up grabbing a sweet deal on an HP EliteBook. Chat did the research, confirmed Linux compatibility, and even suggested Fedora Workstation instead of Mint.

And to my surprise — even the fingerprint reader worked out of the box (right after install).

👉 If you’re a light/office user and comfortable asking ChatGPT for help: just go with Linux.

Choosing a DE

Hey Linux community, I'm setting up a new machine a Mint machine with Ubuntu Studio packaging I'm having to chose a DE but I'm really not excited about any of the current DEs I'm running Fluxbox in my MX and I really like that but I wanted something a bit more modern. I initially looked into KDE but not too keen on it, I wanted to try Wayland but I'm not too keen on some aspects, I currently intalled MATE but I'm finding it uninspiring, love the nostalgia and what not but I'm not excited.

What do you guys use? what makes you want to spend time on your machine??

Experience with arm based system

Hi has anyone run any distro on arm procesor and if so how was it. I know for a fact you can run most distros on arm but what about other programs. I'm asking because i'm considering of buying arm based laptop and i want to know if i can transfer all my riced system without recompiling everything for arm. Thanks in advance for every answer.

Edit: If it matters i'm using rn arch with hyperland but i'm also fiddling with void.

Just got a Samsung SCX-3405 (SCX-340x) working with CUPS on ARM (Raspberry Pi print server)

So there's lots of issues with old Samsung printers and ARM drivers. I fought with it for a while until I just started trying printer drivers in the list.

Steps:

Connect USB printer to the Pi

Install CUPS

add user to lpadmin group

enable web admin for CUPS

install Samsung Unified Linux Driver (apt install hplip printer-driver-splix
)

add the printer in CUPS: go to web interface (http://pi.ip:631), go to Administration > Add Printer

It will show SCX-3400 via USB

Select it, name it and click add printer

on the next page it will ask you for Make and Model. Make is Samsung, but SCX-3400 series is NOT in the list of Models. You have to choose SCX-3200. Add it.

From the CUPS web ui, select the printer you just added and go to Maintenance> print test page
