I'm sick of Windows,

I was originally just going to wait for SteamOS but I want to "move out" now. Windows Explorer keeps crashing, causing my computer to blue screen. I try searching things up through windows key and it looks it up on the website. I am not interested in Windows 11 and its ads.

My specs are

CPU : Ryzen 7 5800x

GPU : RTX 3080

Ram : 32 GB Ram

I got C: drive and D: drive and I probably plan on putting one of them in my D: drive, keeping windows in C:, I plan on playing games and doing youtube.

But I also do some productivity like video editing and drawing (I use Sony Vegas, and Clip Studio Paint). Hopefully there's a way to make them work, especially drivers for my drawing tablet. Would definitely like to hear more advice on this. If not then that's why I'm keeping the dual boot.

And also will my files be able to be transferred over still so I can see them?

I have a ton of questions but I don't want to just ask 500 questions in a singular post.

OS drive filling up

I am building a small media NAS and have installed OMV (a Debian fork) on it.

The OS is installed on a 128Gb SSD and there are 2 20Tb 3,5" HDD's that have been software raided into a single volume mounted on a /Media folder.

Now when I start putting files into said folder it stops at ca. 111Gb and tells me the OS drive is full.

how? why?

(I hope I got the flair right, if not, please don't shoot me ;-) )

Would you use a free, lightweight thin client OS for old PCs or Raspberry Pis?

Hey everyone, I’m experimenting with a tiny, fast Linux OS designed for thin clients—basically a lightweight system that boots quickly, supports remote desktop (RDP/VNC), and includes an easy setup wizard.

It’s meant for:
Old PCs and Raspberry Pis
Home labs or classrooms
Anyone who wants a fast, simple thin client without commercial licenses

Before I go further, I want to know: would this be useful to you?

I'm making the right choice by switching from Windows 11 to Linux and I love it

5 hours ago I switched from Windows to Linux mint because I got tired of Microsoft's bullshit and I always wanted to try Linux and most of my favorite apps work and I like how it's customizable
And how it's really lite wate and my fans don't sound like a airplane engine and how I feel like neo from the Materx every time I use the terminal and thar are some things that annoy me a little bit like how my screen randomly goes back for 10 seconds and how my sound drivers keep on uninstalling tham selfs and how my USB ports don't recognize anything after a reset but I still
Really like Linux even with those little annoyances

what linux for the schools computers?

Now i know i might sound like a noob right now but i need a good linux distro for my schools crappy desktops, they take 3 minutes to reach the desktop on windows 10,while i dont have a spec sheet,it takes like 1-3 minutes to open chrome so definitely 4gb ram max,id assume an intel i3 3-5th gen, probably no gpu, most of these desktops are dead already or on their final breaths,i would’ve used chromeos flex but powerpoint stuff dosent work and the web versions suck in my opinion,im thinking zorin or lubuntu would work? Also i am soon to meet with the IT department as my vice principal has agreed

What does pkexec actually do?

I just figured out pkexec. What’s the actual point of pkexec when sudo already exists? Does pkexec serve some deeper purpose tied to PolicyKit and GUI app authentication?
Can't I use sudo to do the work of pkexec?

been working on a dotfile package manager, calling it... dotmng

I basically wanted something that would allow people to install configs for eww, fabric, weLD, waybar, and the like. Basically gives it more akin to if I were installing android widgets with a CLI. But in reality, this could be used with any dotfiles possible.

I ensured the following when drafting this up.
1. Can pull from git repos (including metadata)

2. warns about files that can be overridden for programs like kitty (some info is incomplete)

3 auto maps files to programs by the name of the folder they're in and auto maps variants by the folder name with respect to a desktop environment, or falls back to default.

Mind you I haven't tested this outside of dry runs, but some features I do know work though. and currently repos needs to be added manually from their git link or PR'd into the right file, as I don't have the funds nor infrastructure to maintain a proper repo server

link to the program itself is here: https://github.com/FyreX-opensource-design/dotmng I haven't organized all the demo noscripts yet...
and an example repo is here for the structure: https://github.com/FyreX-opensource-design/dotmng-example-repo

There are definitely some improvements to be made to this, especially for handing some frameworks like fabric or weLD, which can use any external lib in its python environment. as well as a means to determine placement in some instances, maybe by using yolk or GNU stow.

I'm just hopeful something like this catches on... I find it a bit annoying to look through github and whatnot to find dotfile widgets I like or in some instances, dotfiles for frameworks that are relatively new, like weLD is. I will take contributions for fixes and improvements, and might write some improvements down in the issues tab that I want to shoot for.

Common Ubuntu L unfortunately, and since the post on r/Ubuntu by the original poster, it seems like Canonical/Ubuntu are sticking by their mods teams decision.

Weird looking fonts on google chrome in linux

Hi everyone, I am running popOS and my fonts on google chrome have become strange and funny. It only happens in the searchbar and when I type something, but is absolutely stupid! I have tried a lot of fixes (chatGPT below) but nothing has fixed the issue.
I installed popOS and google chrome again and the same issue still persists!

Need y'alls help figuring this out! Thanks in advance :)

Been using Linux for half a year because I don't want to update to win11

Some thoughts:

1. Asked AI when I didn't know how to do certain things on Linux.
2. Typing commands is easier/faster than a graphical UI
3. Old computer (10+ yo) runs just as fast as new ones
4. Found all the software I need on Linux. Most are better or just as good. There's LM studio for AI, video (OBS/shotcut), and image processing (GIMP), reference manager (Zotero), LibreOffice etc. There's always an alternative for something that runs on Windows, if not the same software version available to Linux.
5. Unsubscribing from all the "antivirus software" that exists solely for Windows system
6. Hardware's driver is never an issue. From RX6600, RX7900 to RTX 5090 they all worked. The last one is new, so I had to go into command mode at the login stage and connect the wifi by typing a command - you learn something new every day.
7. Ubuntu Pro gives 10 years updates on 5 machines. Free.
8. No creepy software stealing my data and IP.
9. Many games can run on Linux without using things like Proton to mimic Windows. Some games have an anti-cheat system, so they can't run on Linux - I'd just play them on PS4/5. No issues with game performance, but it does not support 2560*1080 for Resident Evil 6 on an ultrawide screen, it didn't scale properly.
10. It does freeze or crash, but not often enough to bother me. When it happens, it's for a reason and not random crashing. Sometimes, certain software doesn't open or install properly,so just switch to a different one.

It's not the same Linux from 20 or 10 years ago. I'd never go back to Windows - these companies are charging monthly subnoscriptions, which are insane.

My platform:

1. Linux Ubuntu 24 Pro on 2 machines, soon adding a third.
2. One of the 3 machines I have is at least 10 years old, but runs FASTER than the new computer....weird.

Probably never going back to Windows again, but I plan to keep Windows 10 as a dual system on the 10-year-old machine as a backup.
